INTRODUCTION TO LITERARY CRITICISM

1. Purposes and Benefits of Literature Studies - Literature studies are useful for many things and have
many advantages. They aid in our comprehension of various cultures, historical settings, and human
experiences. We investigate complicated emotions, various viewpoints, and critical thinking via
literature. It improves text analysis and interpretation abilities, empathy, and language skills.
Studying literature fosters creativity and imagination, which furthers the development of the
individual. They also promote fruitful dialogues and offer insights into societal challenges.

2. Literary Genres - Literary genres are groups or classifications that assist in classifying and
organising various kinds of written works based on their common traits, subjects, and styles. Fiction,
non-fiction, poetry, drama, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, romance, historical fiction, and more are
a few examples of literary genres. These subgenres provide readers a preview of the substance and
writing style of a specific work of literature.

Literary Techniques –
1. Metaphor: A comparison between two unrelated things, suggesting that one
thing is another.
2. Simile: A comparison between two things using "like" or "as."
3. Symbolism: The use of objects, characters, or actions to represent abstract ideas
or concepts.
4. Alliteration: The repetition of initial consonant sounds in a series of words.
5. Personification: Giving human qualities to non-human entities.
6. Hyperbole: Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
7. Irony: A contrast between what is expected and what actually happens.
8. Foreshadowing: A hint or clue about what will happen later in the story.
9. Imagery: Vivid and descriptive language that appeals to the senses.
10. Onomatopoeia: Words that sound like the noises they represent (e.g., "buzz,"
"hiss").

4. Definition of Literary Criticism - The examination, interpretation, and evaluation of literary works
such novels, poems, plays, and essays constitute literary criticism. It entails looking at things like
themes, characters, symbols, writing style, and historical context in order to comprehend the work's
objectives, relevance, and deeper meaning. In order to shed light on literature's many levels of
meaning, critics frequently engage in discussions and disputes about the artistic, social, and
intellectual aspects of literature.

5. Purposes of Literary Criticism - Analysing and interpreting literary works, comprehending historical
and cultural contexts, assessing the effectiveness of writing techniques, examining themes and
symbolism, and contributing to discussions about the social and artistic significance of literature are
just a few of the many purposes served by literary criticism.

preconceived notions, and become more literate and critical thinkers through literary conversation.
7. Literary Analysis - This is achieved by looking at the literary strategies, word selections, or writing
patterns the author employs in the piece. A literary analysis should explain why the author chose
particular concepts, words, or writing patterns to make their point.

8. Literary Interpretation - Finding the purpose or theme of a work of literature is the act of
interpreting it. Learn how to use the text's essential components—like the storyline, characters,
place, symbols, and point of view—to direct your interpretation.
