EATING AND EXCRETION DISORDER ii

PUCALLPA-PERU-2024

Summary

Eating disorders (EDs) and excretion disorders are complex, multi-caused

psychiatric illnesses that mainly affect adolescents and young women, and children

at least 4 years of age, respectively. The most frequent diagnosis during

adolescence is that of unspecified ED, followed by anorexia nervosa and bulimia

nervosa. All disorders (EDs) share cardinal symptoms such as excessive

preoccupation with food, weight and/or body shape and the use of unhealthy

measures to control or reduce body weight. In this regard, elimination disorders

refer to evolutionary milestones in the control of anal and bladder sphincter

function, processes that involve pediatric evaluation of at least 4 years (depending

on the disorder) in which sensory and motor functions are coordinated through the

activity of the frontal lobe and regulated by neurons in the pontine and midbrain

areas.

EDs and elimination disorders are often accompanied by medical complications, as

well as psychological complications that can potentially leave irreversible sequelae

for the development of the child and adolescent. To avoid the chronicity of the

disorders, early treatment is recommended, which requires a timely diagnosis and

referral to a specialized team.

This team needs to be interdisciplinary with experience both to be able to cover

the various facets of the disorders as well as the particularities and challenges

involved in their appearance during the ages of prevalence.

Authors' note: To simplify the language used in this manuscript and considering that most
patients with an EDA are women, we will refer to adolescent patients in the feminine way.
EATING AND EXCRETION DISORDER ii

As it is possible to analyze a divergence between both groups of disorders, it is

that in this monographic work they will be taken as independent topics; The

purpose is also to describe the characteristics, epidemiology and trends with

updated information from the most recent publications and classic books.

Keywords: Eating disorders; Adolescents; Epidemiology; Diagnosis;

Treatment; Excretion disorders; Children.

Authors' note: To simplify the language used in this manuscript and considering that most
patients with an EDA are women, we will refer to adolescent patients in the feminine way.
