Function’s Domain & Range

Quadratic polynomial function:

Problem 01: Find the domain and range of the function f ( x) = x 2 + 3x + 2 .
Solution:
Domain:
Given function is,
f ( x) = ( x 2 + 3x + 2 )  R if and if x  R .
That means x takes all real values from the real number set R and make sense.
Therefore the domain of this function is the real number set.
So, the domain of the given function is, D f = R .
Range:

Piecewise function:

A piecewise-defined function (also called a piecewise function or a hybrid function) is

a function which is defined by multiple sub-functions, each sub-function applying to a certain interval of
the main function's domain (a sub-domain).

Modulus/absolute function:

Problem 05: Find the domain and range of the function f ( x) = x + x − 1 .

Dr. Md. Al-Amin Khan (DMAAK), Assistant Professor

Solution:
Domain:
Given absolute value function is,

y = f ( x) = x + x − 1 [ Say]

For breaking points x = 0 and x − 1 = 0  x = 1 .

0 1

There are two breaking points in this mathematical problem such as x = 0 & x = 1 and those points
divide real number line into three intervals like as ( − , 0 ) , [0,1) and [1, ) .Therefore we define this
absolute value function section-ally by three parts.
Now,

y = f ( x) = x + x − 1

−2 x + 1 ,x 0

y = f ( x) =  1 ,0  x 1
 2x +1 , x 1

The domain of the function f ( x) is,

D f = (−,0)  [0,1)  [1, )
D f = ( −,  )
Df = R
For Range:

The value of the function f ( x) in the interval (−, 0) is (1,  ) .

Again
The value of the function f ( x) in the interval [0,1] is {1} .
Again
The value of the function f ( x) in the interval [1, ) is [1, ) .
Dr. Md. Al-Amin Khan (DMAAK), Assistant Professor

Therefore, the range of the given function f ( x) is

R f = (1, )  {1}  [1, )
R f = [1, )

H.W:
Find domain and range of the following functions

Rational Function:

That means given function f ( x) produces real output for all real values of x accept x = 5 .

Therefore, the domain of the given function f ( x) is,

It shows x produces real values for all values of y accept y = 2 .

Therefore, the domain of the given function f ( x) is,

R f = R − 2

Problem 07: Find the domain and range of the function y = .
x−2

y=
x−2

x−2 = 0
or , x = 2
So, y gives real values for all real values of x except x = 2 .
Therefore, the domain of the given function is

or , y =

x−2
or , y = x + 2 ; x2

Therefore, the range of the given function is
R f = R − 4 (Ans)
x 2 − 3x + 2
Problem 08: Find the domain and range of the function f ( x) = .
x2 + x − 6
Solution:
Domain:
Given Rational function is,

x 2 − 3x + 2
f ( x) = 2  R iff x 2 + x − 6  0
x + x−6

 ( x2 + x − 6)  0

 ( x 2 + 3x − 2 x − 6 )  0

 x ( x + 3) − 2 ( x + 3)  0
Dr. Md. Al-Amin Khan (DMAAK), Assistant Professor

 ( x + 3)( x − 2 )  0

 ( x + 3)  0 or ( x − 2)  0
 x  −3 or x2

That means given function f ( x) produces real output for all real values of x accept x = −3 and x = 2 .

Therefore, the domain of the given function f ( x) is,

D f = R − 2, −3

For Range:

x 2 − 3x + 2
Let y = f ( x) = 2
x + x−6

x 2 − 3x + 2
 y= 2
x + x−6

 y ( x 2 + x − 6 ) = x 2 − 3x + 2

 x2 y + xy − 6 y = x2 − 3x + 2

 x2 y − x 2 + xy + 3x − 6 y − 2 = 0

 x 2 ( y − 1) + x ( y + 3) − ( 6 y + 2 ) = 0

−( y + 3)  ( y + 3) 2 − 4.( y − 1).(−) ( 6 y + 2 )
 x=

−( y + 3)  ( y + 3) 2 + 4.( y − 1) ( 6 y + 2 )
x=  R if 2 ( y − 1)  0  y  1 .
2 ( y − 1)

It shows x produces real values for all values of y accept y = 1 .

Therefore, the domain of the given function f ( x) is,

R f = R − 1
