CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Information Communication and technology is a study of computers as a

data processing tools. Introduces students to the fundamental of using computer

system in an internet environment-Information communication and technology (ICT)

is a technology that access telecommunications that similar to information and

technology. But it focuses on communication technology. “ICT is derived any

communication device or application that encompassing radio, television,

telephones, computers, network, hardware and software, satellite system and so on,

as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as video

conferencing and distance learning” (khan et al., 2015).

Education in computer science and engineering has been an active area

throughout much of the 50-year history of the discipline. Particularly since the

establishment of the first computer science departments in the mid-1960s,

considerable attention has been paid to the challenge of training students in this

rapidly evolving field. (Allen B. Tucker et al.1; Strategic Directions in Computer

Science Education) Introductory courses such as Computer Science, Computer

Engineering, Information Technology etc., finds a range of experience among

students: some students have little to no experience and knowledge to computers,

others might have use computers for word processing only. Computer related

courses such as computer science and computer engineer, Information technology

requires basic computer coding and hardware knowledge.

Computer Science, computer Engineer and IT are some of the most popular

study programmes worldwide. If you’re passionate about computer hardware and

software. Computer programming is a difficult and complicated process that can be

easier if you have experienced even a portion of it beforehand. This Study aims to

find out the level of readiness of Grade 12 ICT Students towards taking their

computer related courses in college.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the related literatures discovered during the

researchers' extensive search. This summarizes the subject's concepts and overall
conclusion that are relevant and similar to the current study.

Local Studies

The Philippines implemented in SY 2012-2013 the K to 12 Basic Education

Program, in response to the need to address the mismatch of competencies and job

requirements of industries (“DepEd Order No. 36, s. 2012.pdf,” 2012). In the

implementation of E-learning in higher education institutions should not only focus on

providing the required technology and making learning content available. The failure

of E-Learning is often caused not by technological matters but the inability of 400

educators and universities in providing the planning of the learning process and less

attention to non-technical domains (Frimpon, 2012). According to Lucero, H. R.,

Victoriano, J. M., Carpio, J. T. & Fernado, P. G. J. (2021) cloud computing in higher

education institutions as stressed in this paper could be utilized adequately, since it

is a very cost-effective technology and also due to its manifold benefits. Also, cloud
computing has led to the enhancement of the productivity and experience of I.T staff

members in different institutions.

Foreign Studies

As we live in a digital age, most industries rely on data and software

programmes. Computer Science & IT impacts everything, from scientific research to

health development, transport, banking, communications. Given the tremendous

career opportunities that a foundation in computer science can provide, it makes

sense that we do what we can to improve access to high-quality computer science

learning experiences for all students. Computer science (CS), Information

Technology (IT), and Computer Engineering (CE) is not about understanding how to

use a word processor or create a power point presentation. CS, IT, CE is about

gaining computational thinking skills and is a critical skill set that all students should

have in schools, and educators, and their partners are doing their part to expand

opportunities to Machine learning for all. (Albert P., 2016). In computer programming

there is a strong emphasis on problem-solving rather than theoretical understanding

of programming. This is evident in the research literature and in influential

documents like the ACM/IEEE Computer Science Curriculum. A very important

learning activity in computer programming courses is that students work with

programming assignments in the computer laboratory. (Michael Thuné & Anna

Eckerdal (2019) Analysis of Students’ learning of computer programming in a

computer laboratory context, European Journal of Engineering Education).

The following are literature reviews and studies related factors that influence

students senior high school students in choosing their related computer courses in

college. According to Glazewski and Haw (2008) that ICT is used as a tool for

students to discover learning topics, solve problems, and provide solutions to the

problems in the learning process

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the Assessing student’s ability to use Computers by

Neil Selwyn (1997) It aims to equip students with the ability to use computers or

technology at least adequately. It states the student’s ability prior taking computer

related courses. As & Upchurch (1988, p. 8) propose that all students should receive

computer "competence" instruction in order to act as productive members of the

anticipated new information society. But as Gabriel (1985) also pointed out 10 years

ago Education professionals have been so focused on how to define and teach this

new "literacy" that the issue of how to assess it has received little attention. An

essential component of instructional computing should be assessing students'

computer skills.
