GUIDE CARD!

Hello everyone, Good Hmmm… square roots?

day!
Are you ready?
Study the given picture.
What word can you form?

I think its……
VERY GOOD…
Our lesson for today EXTRACTING
is all about solving SQUARE
quadratic equations ROOTS!!!
by extracting square
roots.

Let’s try this….

Square roots : A square root goes the other way….

Sq uare

3 9
Square root

3 squared is 9, so a square root of 9 is 3

A square root of a number is a value that can be multiplied by itself to give

the original number.
A square root of 9 is 3, because when 3 is multiplied by itself we get 9.
Here are some more squares and square roots:
Square Square Roots

Negative?
62 = 36 √36 = 6
72 = 49 √49 = 7
82 = 64 √64 = 8
9 2 = 81 √81 = 9

Remember :
52 = (5)(5) = 25
(-5)2 = (-5)(-5) = 25

So, √𝟐𝟓 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝟓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 − 𝟓

ACTIVITY 1: “FINDING SQUARE ROOTS”

Find the square roots of the following.

2. 3.
1.

4. 5. -√81

How did you find

your activity?

We can use this in

our topic.
Example 1:
Find the solutions of the equation x2 - 16 = 0 by extracting Study the given examples.

square roots.

Solution:
1. x2 - 16 = 0 x2 - 16 + 16 = 0 + 16 (First make the equation in the form x2 = k )
X2 = 16

= (Square both sides and simplify )

X=±4
To check!
For x = - 4 : For X = - 4:
x2 - 16 = 0 x2 - 16 = 0
(4)2 -16 = 0 (-4)2 -16 = 0
16 - 16 = 0 16 - 16 = 0
0=0 0=0

Note! To check, How do we know

substitute these values in that the answer is
the original equation. correct?

Example 2:
Solve the equation t2 = 0.

Since the equation is t2 equals to 0, then the equation has

only one solution. That is, t2 = 0.

To check: t2 = 0
02 = 0
0=0
1. What did you observe on the examples?
2. What can you say about the roots of the quadratic equations?
Square roots are used in many
Quadratic Equations can be written in the form x2 = k and this places in daily life. There are

k
1. If k > 0, then x2 = k has two real solutions or roots: x= ± .

2. If k = 0, then x2 = k has one real solutions or root: x= 0.

3. If k < 0, then x2 = k has no real solutions or roots.

Let’s find out how much you
understand solving
quadratic equations by
extracting square roots

ASSESSMENT:
EXTRACT ME!
Solve the following using the extracting square roots.

1. 3t2 = 12

2. x2 - 7 = 0

3. (s - 4)2 - 81 = 0

4. 3r2 = 18
5. x2 = 150

ENRICHMENT:

INTENSIFY YOUR UNDERSTANDING!

1. Do you agree that a quadratic equation has at most two solutions?

2. Sheryl says that the solutions of the quadratic equations w2 = 49 and w2 + 49 = 0 are the same?
Do you agree with Sheryl? Justify your answer.
3. Simplify and check!
a. 2s2 = 50
b. (x - 4)2 = 169
ANSWER KEYS!

ACTIVITY 1: ACTIVITY 2:

1. 5
2. 11
3. 2
4. 13
5. 9

ASSESSMENT:

1. t = ± 2

2. x = ± √7 ≈ 2.646

3. s = 13 or s = -5

4. r = ± √6 ≈ 2.449

5. x = ± √150 ≈ 12.247

ENRICHMENT!

1. Yes, a quadratic equation has at most 2 solutions.

2. No, the solutions of the quadratic equations w2 = 49 and w2 + 49 = 0 are not the
same.

w2 = 49 w2 + 49 = 0
√w2 = √4 w2 + 49 - 49 = 0 - 49 w = ± 7
w2 = - 49 (no solution)
3.
a. 2s2 = 50 Checking:
2s2 = 50 2s2 = 50
2=2
S2 = 25 2s2 = 50 2s2 = 50
√s2 = √25 2(5)2 = 50 2(-5)2 = 50
s=±5 2(25) = 50 2(25) = 50
50 = 50 50 = 50
b. (x - 4)2 = 169

√(x-4)2 = √169 x - 4
= ±13

Checking:
Solution 1:
If x = 17 If x = - 9
x - 4 = +13 (x - 4) 2 = 169 (x - 4) = 169
2

x - 4 + 4 = 13 + 4 (17 - 4) 2 = 16 (-9 - 4)2 = 169

x = 17 (13) 2 = 169 (-13)2 = 169
169 = 169 169 = 169

Solution 2:
x - 4 = - 13
x - 4 + 4 = -13 + 4
x=-9
