National History Day Plan of Action 2024-25

Theme: Rights and Responsibilities In History.


Where to start: Go to the National History Day website (www.nhd.org.) and read up on the contest, categories, rules, and suggested
topics.
All steps will constitute classwork or homework grades. Check off each step as you complete them!!!

_______ 1. Project Plan: from each person-submitted in a Google doc


• Your narrowed topic that fits the theme.
• The type of product (website, documentary, performance, exhibit, or historical paper) you are going to construct.
• Your decision on working individually or in a group of up to five students, and the group members’ names.
• A written agreement that you have read and understand the rules for your chosen category, signed by the student and
their parent(s)
Due Date: September 26-27, 2024

_______ 2. Source List: for each project


• A list of 10 or more possible sources about your topic (the final version must be divided into primary and secondary
sections, all sources cited in correct M.L.A. format, including an annotation explaining specifically what you used
from each source and how it helps prove your thesis).
• As you continue the research, you will need to add or take away sources you don’t need.
• For your final project, you should have at least twenty + sources with a balance of primary and secondary!
Due Date: October 10-11, 2024

_______ 3. NHD thesis statement rough draft: for each project


• Write a rough draft of the thesis that lists two to three provable reasons why your topic is significant to Rights and
Responsibilities in History (your final project will include a thesis statement and a conclusion that summarizes your evidence
you used to prove your thesis).
Due Date: October 31-November 1, 2024

_______ 4. A written plan for your project: for each project that shows how and where you are presenting the evidence to prove
your thesis statement

• If you are choosing to complete a historical paper, write an outline of your paper and include an correct example of an end
note, footnote, or an intext citation of a source you are using-REQUIRED FOR HISTORICAL PAPERS!!!
• If you are choosing to complete a documentary or an exhibit, write an outline and/or draw a story board and/or a script.
• If you are choosing a performance, write your script include costumes and props that you will need.
• If you are choosing a website, start your website by following the link through the NHD.org website, and start a homepage
and page for each part of your evidence. (https://website.nhd.org/)
Due Date: November 14-15, 2024

_______ 5. Draft cover sheet and process paper: for each project -consult the N.H.D. Rulebook for details about what should be
included, and in what order it should be written.
Due date: December 5-6, 2024

_______ 6. Completed Projects (including all required parts according to the rules, ready to be evaluated!)
Final Due Date: January 16-17, 2025.-your project will be evaluated with the Objective Rubric (points based on the necessary
components according to the current N.H.D. rulebook), and a Subjective Rubric (options to revise your project, compete in school and
county competitions, and /or write reflective essays about what you learned and/or what you would do differently)
Important Dates for optional competitions:
• Sanford Middle School Competition: Date TBD
• County Competition: March 1, 2025 -The top two students from each category of our school competition are eligible to compete.
• State Competition at Tallahassee: May 5-7,2025? (http://www.floridahistoryday.com/)The top two in the Seminole County competition in each
category are eligible to compete at the Florida History Fair.
• National Competition at the University of Maryland: June, 2025 –The state winners and runners-up in each category are eligible.
