Interpretation:
The presence of HL-B27antigen is strongly associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial
musculoskeletal system and a few other rheumatic disorder (Reiter’s syndrome, acute anterior uveitis, and inflammatory bowel
disease). HLA-B27 testing is routinely used to screen for patients.

Interpretation:
Rheumatoid factor is an immunoglobulin present in the serum of 50%–95% of adults with rheumatoid arthritis. It appears in the
serum and synovial fluid several months after the onset of rheumatoid arthritis and is present for up to years after therapy. The
antibody of the macroglobulin type produced in the synovium appears in the presence of autoimmunity, chronic infections, or
connective tissue defects. This factor, though not specific for rheumatoid arthritis, is very helpful in diagnosis because high titers
correlate with severe disease as compared to titers with other diseases.
