Introduction to Chemical Engineering
“Chemical engineers have been responsible for delivering just
about every product we use — from the silicon chips in our
computers, to the paper we write on, to the water we drink.
“Engineering facilitates things that we take for granted in our
daily life,” points out Ralph Larson, staff vice president of
engineering at 3M (St. Paul, MN), who has been with the firm
for 35 years. “Engineers are involved in everything from
product conceptual development on the bench, through
developing a process for that particular innovation, to managing
our factories, to managing the supply chain.”

Engineering & Construction Companies
Chem. Engineers work • Detailed design of the plant
as process designers / • Construct the plant on behalf of the operating
project managers company
• Perform equipment purchasing and installation
Chemical engineers design a new chemical process, which is
represented in the form of Process Flow Diagram (PFD) drawing
(This drawing is PFD of the solvent-regeneration section of an
absorption unit in a chemical plant)
Chemical engineers design / prepare the so-called Piping &
Instrumentation Diagrams (P & IDs), which show details of piping,
equipment, instruments, and control system. The P & IDs are used

Chemical Engineering unit operations
Despite the very large number of chemical processes and products,
there are only a modest number of different kinds of chemical
process steps => the field of chemical engineering can be broken
down into manageable segments. These segments are called unit
operations. Individual units belonging to a specific type of unit
operation (for example, distillation units) would be used in varied
types of chemical plants, but they are based on the same scientific
principles. The result: A chemical plant can be considered as a
collection of operations connected by a network of pipes. It requires
a certain amount of thinking in systems to design a process
optimally. The resulting network is represented by the PFD drawing

Chemical Engineering unit operations

A chemical process plant: a series of unit operations that are

connected and work together as a complete system
Chemical Engineering unit operations

Because the unit operations are a branch of engineering, they

are based on both science and experience. Each process step
can be carried out in a variety of equipment types. Theory and
practice must combine to yield designs for equipment that can
be fabricated, assembled, operated and maintained. Usually
the apparatus selected is chosen because it has some
particular advantage in light of the properties of the materials
being processed or the goal of the process step
What you will study in HCMUT Chemical
Engineering (ChemE) education program?
- The foundations of science and engineering education program
(Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry for engineers)
- Relevant / important types of unit operations commonly found in a
chemical process plant
- System thinking approach to design a chemical plant (how to
select the appropriate types of unit operations and connect them
together, analyze economical, environmental and safety aspects of
chemical processes)
- Theory and practice to design a specific type of chemical process
equipment such as heat exchanger, distillation column
- Process simulation, optimization, data analysis using relevant
software
- Specialized / elective courses that focus on specific topics in
ChemE field of study such as Petroleum Refining Technology,
Surfactant Chemistry and Technology, etc…
