are connected in parallel.
(6 marks)

b. A business consist of the following:

- An Electric motor connected to 500V with a resistance of 50 Ω for 10 hours
per week
- Two 3kW electrical fires connected for an average of 20 hours per week
- Six 150W lights connected for an average of 30 hours per week

If the cost of Electricity is $ 53 per unit, determine the weekly cost of electricity to the
business.

(10 marks)

Question 3

a. The resistance of a coil of aluminum wire at 18◦C is 200. The temperature of the
wire is increased and the resistance rises to 240. If the temperature coefficient of
resistance of aluminum is 0.0039/◦C at 18◦C determine the temperature to which
the coil has risen.
(8 marks)

b. In a series circuit consisting of two different rated bulbs; when connected across
a dc source, it was noted that only one of the bulb was lighting while the other
was not. Explain why this happened in this circuit
(8 marks)

c. An electromagnet exerts a force of 15 N and moves a soft iron armature through

a distance of 12 mm in 50 ms. Determine the power consumed

(4 marks)
Question 4

In a parallel circuit, there is more than one loop or pathway so charge flow gets split up
or recombined at junction points. Therefore current is not the same at every point in the
circuit

a. How does the current through the one resistor in circuit A, compare to the
current through each resistor in circuit B?
(3 marks)
b. How does the sum of the currents through the three bulbs in circuit B
compare to current from the battery in circuit A?
(5 marks)
c. How is the current out of the battery (and back into it) affected by adding
resistors in parallel? Explain
(5marks)
d. If the resistors were light bulbs, how does the brightness of each bulb in
circuit B compare to the brightness of the single bulb in circuit A?
(4 marks)
e. How is the resistance of a circuit affected by adding additional pathways?
(3 marks)

Question 5

a. A resistor of 8 is connected in parallel with one of 12 Ω and the combination is

connected in series with one of 4 Ω. A p.d. of 10 V is applied to the circuit. The 8
Ω resistor is now placed across the 4 Ω resistor. Find the p.d. required to send
the same current through the 8 Ω resistor
(6 marks)
b. A Lab technician constructed a capacitor so that its capacitance is 4250 pF and
to operate at a p.d. of 100 V across its terminals. The dielectric is to be polythene
(εr = 2.3) which, after allowing a safety factor, has a dielectric strength of
20MV/m. You are asked to find (a) the thickness of the polythene used and (b)
the area of a plate.
