Task 2- Module 5

You should attempt to answer these questions without looking at the answers first.

These questions are designed to test your understanding of the module. If you get
them all correct, you have understood everything in the module. If you get any of
them wrong, you have not understood the module and should watch it again.

Answers are on the last page.

1. Introductions should engage the reader with an interesting first sentence:

a. No, never.
b. Yes, always.

2. An introduction should always have an opinion:

a. Yes, always.
b. No, never.

3. Which of these should never be included in an introduction:

a. Paraphrase of the question
b. Outline of main ideas
c. Background statement
d. Opinion

4. We paraphrase by:
a. Writing a sentence so that it has the same meaning by different words
b. Writing a sentence so that it has the same words but different meaning

5. Try paraphrasing the following:

Many people believe that cooking is an essential life skill and should be
taught to boys and girls in schools. Others disagree and believe it is a
waste of school time.

and

There are many animal species close to extinction. Some say that only
animals that are beneficial to people should be protected.

6. Try to write an introduction for the following questions:

Task 2- Module 5
Some people believe that zoos where animals are kept in a man-made
environment should no longer exist in the 21st century. Do you agree or
disagree?

and

There is not enough recycling of waste materials (e.g. paper, glass, cans).
What are the reasons for this problem and what are some possible
solutions?
Task 2- Module 5
Answers:

1. A
2. A
3. C
4. A

The example answers below are just some of many different answers that
could get a very high score. Do not worry if your answers are not exactly
the same as them. They are only to give you an idea of how to approach
each question.

5. Many think that being able to cook is a crucial life skill and children should
learn it in school. Others do not agree with this and argue that it would be a
waste of student’s time.

and

A large number of species have nearly gone extinct. Some argue that only
creatures that are of use to humans should have protection.

6. Many people argue that zoos where creatures are contained in artificial
enclosures should be banned in this century. This essay totally agrees with
this statement because it is cruel to keep an animal in a confined space and
nature programs allow us to view animals without the need of a zoo.

and

There is a lack of reusing and repurposing materials, such as paper, glass

bottles and tin cans. The main reason for this problem is a lack of education
about the environment and a public awareness campaign is the most
viable solution.
