Mental and Emotional Health and Well-being

Mental and Emotional Health Continuum


Mental health conditions are patterns of thinking and feeling that decrease
_MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH______ health; this can be everyday worrying
or a serious mental illness.
_____MENTAL DISTRESS_________________ is a short-term mental and
emotional state in which negative thoughts and feelings impair relationships, daily
tasks, and enjoyment of life. Examples: sadness after a fight with a friend or
anxiousness about an upcoming test.

Factors Affecting Mental and Emotional Health

● ____GENETICS_________________

Genetic predisposition- the increased likelihood of developing a health


condition due to genes inherited from biological parents: major depressive
disorders, anxiety disorder, bipolar, and schizophrenia.

● Upbringing and experiences- life experiences and the way you were raised

● Environment- relationships, culture, and community can greatly impact


your mental and emotional health
___Self-actualization___________________-the feeling you are reaching
your full potential
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs categorizes needs and shows how they
progress.
o Self-actualization-all needs have been fulfilled
o __ESTEEM STAGE____-need to be liked and accepted
o Love and Acceptance-need for support, assurance and praise
o ___SECURITY STAGE_ stage-need to feel safe in surroundings
o Physical needs-need for ____AIR__________, clothing, and shelter
● Social media and technology-TV shows and advertisements reflect the
beliefs of the culture anhipotled community in which you live.
● Patterns of thinking- people’s thoughts about themselves and the world
have a significant influence on mental and emotional health.
o _COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS___-unhealthy patterns of thinking that
are often not grounded by reality, they can also create anxiety.

Embracing your Identity


__IDENTITY__________- characteristics and qualities that distinguish who a
person is. Figuring out who you are will help you feel better about yourself and
make good decisions.

Components of Identity:
Core values and beliefs- a person’s core values are a key part of identity.
__CORE VALUES________________ are the fundamental beliefs and
ideals people hold that guide their behaviors and choices.
Personality- another important part of identity is personality, or the
combination __THOUGHTS FEELINGS_________________________,
and behaviors that make a person unique.
Physical Identity-made up of physical characteristics. These characteristics
include your biological __SEX____________________, height,
weight, hair and eye color, and physical abilities.
Gender-describes the characteristics a society associates with biological sex,
genetically and physically male or female.
Gender __STEREOTYPES__- societal assumptions about boys and
girls; for example: girls must play with dolls and boys can only play
with trucks and cars.
__SOCIAL IDENTITY___-your connection to other people, including
family, friends, and group membersy
Cultural and Ethnic Identity- your connection to different cultural and
ethnic groups. _CULTURAL CONNECTION________ is one’s
connection to a particular social
group that shares similar cultural or national ties.
Identity formation is the process of discovering and establishing your identity.
The process begins during __CHILDHOOD___ and continues throughout a
person’s entire life.
Ways to discover your identity:
-acknowledge your qualities

-try new activities
-__LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES

Building Your Self-Esteem


SELF-IMAGE is your mental picture of your abilities, appearance, and personality
based on experiences and interactions with others.
Self-esteem describes how you feel __ABOUT YOURSELF. This can also change
through life experiences and new understandings.

Characteristics of Self-esteem
High Self-esteem Low Self-Esteem
Generally likes oneself Generally dislikes oneself
Feels secure and worthy of love _FEELS INSECURE and unworthy of
love
_ACCEPTS CORRECTIONS__ Sensitive to criticism

Improving your Self-esteem

● _KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS_- focus on your positive qualities rather than


what you dislike about yourself
● Celebrate your successes-focus on times you have succeeded and recognize
and accept areas you can improve.
o _AFFIRMATION_-statements that acknowledge a person’s value and
strengths.
● Avoid Perfectionism- holding yourself to impossibly high standards is
harmful to your self-esteem. _PERFECTIONISM -personal standard or
attitude that rejects anything less than an ideal performance.
● Care for yourself- engaging in physical activity, getting enough sleep, taking
time to relax, personal hygiene, and eating well.
o _SELF-CARE- taking care of your own well-being and health.

Expressing Your Emotions


Mood swings- sudden shifts in emotion. Mood swings can be caused by chemical
changes in the body, they are a NORMAL part of adolescence.
EMOTIONS- strong feelings based on circumstances, relationships, or moods.
Defense mechanism- a mental process used to AVONSCIENCE
CONFLICT, feelings, or thoughts.

Manage your Emotions

● Identify what you are feeling

● ACCEPT YOUR FEELINGS-try not to judge or change them


● Express your feelings-this will make you feel better

CLOSEEMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE is a skill that people have in perceiving,


understanding, and managing emotions and feelings. It is necessary in order to
develop close personal relationships with others.
