from the Written and Oral Communication course, which I will forever hold
important in my life as a writer and reader. Although there were obstacles I
encountered at first in the course, for example, my late submissions, Mrs.
Fordwor and Mrs. Johnson helped us overcome every one of them.
The first day of class was awkward. It was my first time sharing a class with so
many intelligent people from different countries. Eventually, I overcame this
feeling, learning that we were all alike somehow. During WOC sessions, I felt
more like a writer. In the WOC course, we were introduced to reading materials
from good, experienced writers. I learned about character development and plot
structures of stories from reading the books, which helped me improve my
writing techniques. I realized why it was so necessary for scholars to read stories.
Learning from other writers by reading their stories was an indispensable
practice that helped me grow. By embracing established authors' wisdom,
experience, and creativity, I learned so much about good storytelling and giving
good narratives.
We had to give speeches throughout WOC as part of the course outline. Although
initially, I was terrified because it was my first time giving a speech in front of a
crowd. With the help of Mrs. Fordwor and Mrs. Johnson, I gave an excellent
speech for someone fearing crowds. This was a groundbreaking experience for
me. This helped me defeat my fear of public speaking. Using this experience of
public speaking, I was also able to deliver good presentations in all my other
courses. I could also write better project outlines and essays using thesis
statements, which was a significant change for me, all thanks to Woc.
Moving on, I also learned exciting things from WOC, which I had yet to learn. To
me, the introduction of the thesis statement and hook was a very new thing that
I took to be useful. Learning about the thesis statement and hook helped
improve my writing skills. The Hooks helped me write stories that entice readers
and capture their attention to continue. In contrast, the thesis statement helped
me provide good structure and clarity, helping me develop good arguments and
narratives. In addition, I learned about the setting and tone, which helps bring
irony and clarity to storytelling. The essence of citing when writing. Citation
helped me prevent any plagiarism, therefore upholding good writing ethical
standards. Furthermore, Citations not only helped me avoid plagiarism but also
helped strengthen my writing arguments. The
least helpful skill I learned was motif and foil. I never used these literal elements
and techniques. Another exciting thing I learned was the multimodal. I had never
done a multimodal before or even heard about it. Just last week, we were told to
do a multimodal project. I am learning a lot doing a multimodal. I realized all this
information would be beneficial in the future, helping me be effective in
communication, writing good reports, and expanding my career opportunity
. More group work would be great if there was anything to improve in the course.
I enjoyed my teamwork with Roger and would like to do more. Working in groups
helped me collaborate and increase efficiency in assignments. Lastly, another
idea would be to incorporate more opportunities for practical application and
real-world projects. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical concepts and
academic exercises.
