Introduction
Def in it io n o f r en ew ab le?
 Naturally replenished.
 Clean.
 Does not harm the environment.
 Never run out/constantly renewed.

Renewable Energy 1:
THE MOST POPULAR
RE 1: Solar Photovoltaic (PV)
• Grid connected
RE 1: Solar PV (cont…)
• Standalone (battery system is needed)
RE 1: Solar PV (cont…)
• Types of solar panel (mono, poly, TF, HIT)

MONO THIN
POLY HIT

MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEES

• The most popular: Polycrystalline (efficiency comparable to

Monocrystalline but cheaper price)
• The least efficient: Thin-Film (biggest in terms of size, the most
suitable with tropical weather)
• The most efficient: HIT (smallest in terms of size, the most
expensive)
• Popular due to various government driven program such as FiT,
NeM & LSS that comes with attractive incentives financially.
• Supposed to be maintenance free.
• High initial cost.
• 20 – 21 years system lifespan.

RE 1: So lar PV (co n t …)
Renewable Energy 2:
Implemented…
without success.
suitable average speed for
RE 2: Wind Power wind generator = 9 m/s

• Converts mechanical
energy into electrical
energy.
• Normally used electrical
machine; synchronous
generator.
• Same concept with
hydroelectric turbine or
dynamo for bicycle lighting.
• Problem 1: imported wind
generator unsuitable for
M’sian wind profile.
• Problem 2: 9 m/s average vs
5 m/s max.
Renewable Energy 3:
Implemented…
but partly successful
RE 3: Biomass Power
• Convert waste into energy.
• Example: Crop waste
(agricultural) or domestic waste
(thrash) – Waste To Energy
(WTE) program.
• Hugely successful in developed
countries overseas.
• Potential: 30,000 tonne
consistent supply of waste in
2020.
RE 3: Biomass Power (cont…)
• Problem 1: 1500 tonne/daily in
Klang Valley, incinerator cost of
RM 1.5 billion (10 years ago).
100 tonne/daily in Langkawi = <
RM 100 million
• Problem 2: Run by contractors
with no expertise – rules &
regulations??

Renewable Energy 4:
Not yet implemented…
but with huge potential!
RE 4: Wave Power
• Convert threats into opportunity.
• Why: beach erosion at east
coast, Sabah & Sarawak = ? km.
• How: coastal defence walls +
wave turbines
• Problem: cost for 1km = RM 1
Billion
ANOTHER RENEWABLE
ENERGY
BIOGAS
• Biogas is produced by anaerobic
digestion with methane or anaerobic
organisms

23/12/2020 19
Lightning Power
• Harvest energy from lightning.

• Why: Malaysia is the 3rd in the

world for a place that receives
the most lightning strikes.

• Enormous potential: 10 billion

watts in microseconds.
