Assessment Requirements
Video Essay
Context
This term, students explored the contemporary possibilities of storytelling
across multiple platforms and media. They analysed their own engagement as
readers and active participants in the creation of meaning and the relationship
between texts and how this adds complexity to both the creation and reception
of these texts. As such, students will take their original essay and adapt it into a
video essay to fit the context in which it is relevant.

Task
You are to create a multimodal (video essay) in the form of a TED Talk or
animated video that addresses the following question:

'Appropriation of past texts enables contemporary responders to

reconnect with literature of different eras and appreciate the influence
of context.’

To what extent is this statement correct?

1
Year 11 Standard English Assessment Task 2

In your response, discuss this statement with detailed reference to your

prescribed text studied this term and ONE related text. Your video essay must
capture the central theme/idea that marks the relationship between your
prescribed text and your chosen text.

Multimodal – Video Essay /30

You will present your multimodal text via USB or video link, along with a
copy of your transcript (the essay you will read in your video) on the
submission date. The multimodal must include visual, audio, and linguistic
elements that reflect the ideas central to one of the themes of your
prescribed text and your related text.

In the composition of their TED talk, students must use a variety of

medium including short video clips, images, and text. Students may
use software such as Keynote, PowerPoint, Prezi, iMovie, Adobe Spark
or other appropriate tools. Students must present this by either:
a) Recording their voice over the top of the presentation OR
b) Recording themselves next to their presentation (i.e. have a
presentation on a screen beside the speaker etc.)

Video essays may include any or all of the following:

•Voice-over (VO)- film or still images are shown while someone is speaking
over the top
•Text & Images - written text that has been inserted/created on the screen
over video or still images; this may also include the use of infographics.
•Supercut – this term refers to the selective cutting between excerpts from
feature films, with or without the inclusion of a guiding voice-over

You will need to be creative and express your ideas in an artistic manner to
succeed in this task.

Your multimodal presentation will be assessed on its ability to:

 Be based upon a clearly defined thesis statement
 Include some form of narration (ie: VO from you; intertitles; subtitles as
necessary)
 Support your overarching thesis statement with not only quotes and
techniques but also carefully selected clips and/or still images from the
text or ideas you are addressing
 Last no longer than 5 minutes, minimum 4 minutes

Your Multimodal presentation will be assessed on:
