Hoi An culture has multi-layered depth with the interference of East - West, modern -
ancient. Hoi An is considered a "living museum" of Vietnamese culture. These
cultural values are beauty that needs to be preserved
1. Cultural interference in Hoi An ancient town
1.1. The interference of ancient cultures:

a. Beliefs:
In Hoi An, besides the custom of worshiping ancestors, people also have the custom
of worshiping Ngu Tu Gia Duong. Most people believe that the Ngu Tu Gia Duong
are 5 gods who look after, govern, and arrange the destiny of a family, including:
Kitchen God, Gate God, Well God, Guardian Immortal Master, and Cuu Thien
Huyen.
The five-letter family altar according to Hoi An culture will be solemnly placed in the
middle of the house, on the ancestral altar
b. Religious
Regarding religion, Hoi An culture has many different religions: Buddhism,
Protestantism, Cao Dai, Roman Catholicism,... but Buddhism is still the majority.
Many families in Hoi An do not follow Buddhism but still worship Buddha and are
vegetarian. In each house, the Buddha altar is placed in a solemn, pure place and is
usually one level higher than the ancestral altar.
Another difference in Hoi An beliefs is the custom of worshiping Quan Cong. Quan
Cong Temple was built in the center of the old town, becoming a sacred religious
center, with incense and smoke all year round. Hoi An families have long had the
concept of worshiping Quan Cong as a guardian deity, protecting the peace of the
whole family.

convergence has existed for centuries, Hoi An has a diverse cuisine with distinct
nuances. In the daily meals of Hoi An people, seafood always makes up the majority.
In the market, the amount of shrimp, crab, and fish is also consumed twice as much
as the amount of meat.
Typical dishes of Hoi An's urban cuisine are cao lau, wontons, cauldron cakes,
dumplings,... In addition, Hoi An also has many attractive rustic dishes such as banh
xeo, banh beo, bánh tráng, hến trộn, Quang noodles,

 Hoi An's wonderful culture is also expressed through music, folk games and
performances. Originating from the working culture of the local people, the
forms of performance (hò khoan, hò kéo neo, hát bả trạo, hò giựt chì, các điệu
lý, vè, hát tuồng, hô thai, hô bài chòi,.) ...) is still maintained and is an

Hoi An still preserves many types of traditional festivals such as: Festivals
commemorating the patriarchs of the industry, festivals paying homage to the village
tutelary god, festivals of religious beliefs, festivals commemorating saints, ... Every
year, usually at the beginning of spring, villages hold festivals to commemorate the
merits of saints, sages,...

ngành nghề, lễ kính ngưỡng thành hoàng làng, lễ tín ngưỡng tôn giáo, lễ kỷ niệm
các bậc thánh nhân,... Hằng năm, đặc biệt vào đầu xuân, các làng mở lễ hội để
tưởng nhớ công lao của các vị thánh nhân, các vị tiên hiền,...

the culture of behavior, communication, lifestyle, and virtue of the people of Hoi An

tourists to Hoi An
The lifestyle of the townspeople does not cover up and replace the lifestyle of the
village community. In the city center area, there are still village communal houses,
clan churches and village-based institutions. Hoi An culture bears a strong
impression of Town - Village. That's why "Hoi An is crowded with people, the people
are kind and the flowers are colorful."
