Hoi An culture has multi-layered depth with the interference of East - West, modern -
ancient. Hoi An is considered a "living museum" of Vietnamese culture. These
cultural values are beauty that needs to be preserved
1. Cultural interference in Hoi An ancient town
1.1. The interference of ancient cultures:
Sa Huynh culture, Champa culture, Dai Viet cuture
The five-letter family altar according to Hoi An culture will be solemnly placed in the
middle of the house, on the ancestral altar
b. Religious
Regarding religion, Hoi An culture has many different religions: Buddhism,
Protestantism, Cao Dai, Roman Catholicism,... but Buddhism is still the majority.
Many families in Hoi An do not follow Buddhism but still worship Buddha and are
vegetarian. In each house, the Buddha altar is placed in a solemn, pure place and is
usually one level higher than the ancestral altar.
Another difference in Hoi An beliefs is the custom of worshiping Quan Cong. Quan
Cong Temple was built in the center of the old town, becoming a sacred religious
center, with incense and smoke all year round. Hoi An families have long had the
concept of worshiping Quan Cong as a guardian deity, protecting the peace of the
whole family.
