Historical fiction as a genre

PREPARED BY DASHA SERVATYNSKA

Historical fiction is a literary genre where the story
takes place in the past.
Historical fiction transports readers to
another time and place, either real or
imagined.

Writing historical fiction requires a balance of

research and creativity, and while it often
includes real people and events, the genre offers
a fiction writer many opportunities to tell a
wholly unique story.
Historical fiction as we know it in contemporary Western
literature dates back to the early 19th century.

Sir Walter Scott, Honoré de

Balzac, James Fenimore Cooper, and Leo Tolstoy were among the
first novelists to explore the historical setting as its own concept for a
book.
5 Common Elements of Historical Fiction

1.Setting: The setting is the most important part of a

historical fiction novel. It should take place during an authentic
period in history and be set in a real historical place.

2.Plot: The plot in a historical fiction novel is a combination of

real events and fictional events. You can invent characters,
cities, and events, but they still must make sense to the time
period.
5 Common Elements of Historical Fiction

3.Characters: The characters can be real, fictional,

or both, but they should all look, speak, and act in
ways that accurately reflect the era.

4.Dialogue: The dialogue must be authentic to

the time period and should reflect the status of the
characters who are speaking.

5.Conflict: The problems the characters encounter

should be conflicts people of that era would
encounter
Types of Historical Fiction
The general category of Historical Fiction is often called Documentary
Fiction. It adheres closely to events of the era and strives to be as historically
accurate as possible.

Biographical Historical Fiction, tells the fictionalized story of a real
person’s life. This category also includes stories about the history of a
specific group of people, like Charles Johnson’s Middle Passage
which details the terrors of the slave trade.

Historical Series and Epics are works of Historical Fiction that cover
many eras, often in several settings.

Historical Mysteries and Thrillers have all the elements of the
contemporary genre; they’re just set in the past. Set in a remote
Icelandic coastal town in the 1680s, The Glass Woman (2019)
by Caroline Lea features a newly-married woman questioning
how her husband’s previous wife died.

Historical Romance tells the burning love stories of the past.

Historical Adventures often take readers on journeys by air,
sea, or land.

Historical Fantasy gives the author artistic license to change the
details of the past while holding fast to others.
