A . Concentric circles around the straight conductor.

Q2. Mention the special features regarding the shape of magnetic field lines.

A. magnetic field lines are closed curves.

Q3.If magnetic field lines are crossed at a point, what does it indicate?

A. If field lines of magnetic field cross each other at a point it would mean that at the point
of intersection, the compass needle would point towards two directions, which is not
possible.

Q4. Name the rule used to determine the direction of magnetic field lines due to a straight
current carrying conductor.

A. By using right hand thumb rule.

Q5. Name the rule used to determine the direction of force on a current carrying conductor
placed in a magnetic field.

A. Fleming’s left hand rule.

Q6. An alternating current changes its direction twice in a cycle . Its frequency is 50 Hz,
how many times the direction will change in one second?

A. 100 times.

Q7. Mention the shape of magnetic field lines inside a solenoid.

A. The magnetic field lines inside a solenoid are in the form of parallel straight lines.

Q8. Name the type of current (a) used in household supply (b) given by a cell.

A. (a) Alternating current (ac) (b) Direct current (dc).

Q9. Mention the voltage and frequency of current that we receive at our house.

A. Voltage: 220V; Frequency: 50 Hz.

2 MARK QUESTIONS
1
Q1. Define a solenoid. How is it different from a coil?

A. A coil of many circular turns of insulated copper wire wrapped closely in the shape a
cylinder is called a solenoid.

The strength of magnetic field inside a coil vary while inside the solenoid it is uniform.

Q2 .State two ways by which the strength of an electromagnet can be increased.

A. The strength of an electromagnet can be increased by:

(i) Increasing the number of turns in the solenoid.

(ii) Increasing the strength of current flowing through the solenoid.

Q3.(a)Name the type of current by most of the power stations in our country.

(b)Why is it preferred over the other type?

(c) State the frequency of the power supply in India.

A. (a) Alternating current (ac).

(b) Alternating current (ac) is preferred because in comparision to direct current (dc),it
can be transmitted over long distances effectively.

(c) 50 Hz.

Q4. (i) A compass needle gets deflected when brought near a current carrying conductor.
Why?

(ii) What happens to the deflection of needle when current in the conductor is
increased ?

A. (i) Current carrying conductor produces a magnetic field around it.

(ii) Deflection increases with increase in current.

Q5. Name the factors on which force on a current carrying conductor depends.

A. Force on a current carrying conductor depends on:

(i)Strength of magnetic field.

(ii) Strength of current in the conductor.

(iii)Length of the conductor.

Q6. Differentiate between overloading and short circuiting.

A. Overloading is connecting too many devices to a single socket.
2
short circuiting is the direct contact of live and neutral wire.

Q7. What is a fuse? How does it function?

A. An electric fuse is a device to protect the circuit and appliances connected to it
from being damaged.
A fuse is a piece of wire made of a material having a low melting point. When
current through it exceeds than the safeguard limit, it melts and breaks the circuit.

Q8. How does the magnetic field at the centre of a circular coil of a wire depend on?
(a) radius of the coil
(b) number of turns in the coil.
A. (a) As radius increases, strength of magnetic field decreases.
(b) As number of turns increases, strength of magnetic field increases.

Q9. Find the minimum rating of fuse that can be safely used on a line on which two
1.1kW, electric geysers are to run simultaneously. The supply voltage is 220V.
A. I =nP/V ;here n=2
So I= 2X1.1X1000/220=2200/220=10 A
The rating of fuse should be more than 10 A.

3 MARK QUESTIONS
Q1. Name any three factors on which the magnitude of the magnetic field due to
solenoid depends.
A. Factors on which the magnitude of the magnetic field due to solenoid depends
(i) Strength of current
(ii) Number of turns
(iii) Permeability of core material
(iv) Radius of solenoid
Q2. (a) An electric oven of rating 2kW, 220Vis operated in a circuit with a current
rating of 5 A. What result would you expect?
(b)Electric fuse is an important component of all domestic circuits? Explain.
A.(a) The current drawn from the circuit is
I=P/V = 2000/220 = 9.09 A. This is much more than the rated value of current for
the circuit.
Therefore, the fuse in the circuit will blow off.
(b) It is a safety device which protects the circuit from damage due to short
circuiting.
Q3. What is meant by overloading of an electric circuit? Explain two possible causes
due to which overloading may occur in household circuit. Explain one precaution that
should be taken to avoid overloading.
3
A. It is a situation in a circuit when current increases abruptly.
Causes:
(i) Accidental hike in the supply voltage.
(ii) Too many appliances connected to a single socket.
Precaution:
Too many devices should not be connected to the same socket.
Q4. Draw the pattern of field lines due to a solenoid carrying electric current. Mark the
north pole and south poles in the diagram.
The field lines are as shown.

Q5. Draw the patterns of lines of force due to a magnetic field through and around a
current carrying loop of wire. How would the strength of the a magnetic field produced
at the centre of circular loop be affected
If (i) the strength of the current passing through this loop is doubled?
(i) the radius of the loop is reduced to half of the original value?
A. The pattern of field lines are as shown:
(i) the magnetic field strength is doubled as B  I .
(i) the magnetic field strength is doubled as B  1/r.

5 MARK QUESTIONS
1. (a) What is the function of an earth wire in electrical appliances? Why is it necessary
to earth the metallic electrical appliances?

(b) Which effect of electric current is utilised in the working of an electric fuse?

(c) Draw a labelled schematic diagram of a domestic circuit which has the
provision of a main fuse, meter and bulb and switch socket.

A .(a) It ensures that any leakage of current in the device flows to the earth without
causing any harm to the user .It is necessary to earth the metallic electrical devices so
as to save the user from getting electric shock.

(b) Heating effect of electric current is utilised in the working of an electric fuse.

(c)

Q2 (a). Describe an experiment with a diagram to show that force is exerted on a

current carrying conductor when placed perpendicular in a magnetic field.

(b) How will this force change if current in the conductor is increased?

(c) Name a device that uses the above principle.

A.(a) Consider the rod shown in figure which is placed in a magnetic field. When
current is passed through the rod , it gets deflected. This shows that a current carrying
conductor when placed perpendicular in a magnetic field experiences a force.

5
(b) The force acting on the rod will increase if current in the conductor is increased.

(c) An electric motor.
