Read the text and answer the following questions:


1. Why does writer take a vacation at this particular lake?
Ans. The writer used to visit the lake in Maine in childhood with father every year in month of
August. The childhood fantasy has developed a sense of belonging. Therefore, writer takes a
vacation at this particular lake in the Maine. The calmness of the natural lake provides him
relief.
2. Which key concerns the writer has expressed in the text?
Ans. Writer planned to go the lake after many years. He wanted to show the lake to his son and
relive the childhood memories. He had some concerns that modernization and technology had
marred the natural place like Lake in the main.
3. How has the lake changed since he was a boy?
Ans. There were some changes the writer mentioned. First, previously roads were not paved. Now
there are tarred roads. Second, The boat produce irritating and unpleasant noise now unlike
before.
4. What contrast does the writer make between the sea and the lake?
Ans. Sea is usually wild and unpeaceful while lake was calm and peaceful place where sense of
passing time is not felt.
5. Why does writer repeatedly call the lake as ‘wild lake?
Ans. The writer only used once the word wild lake. It was not for the lake. He did not call lake
“the wild lake”.
6. Why is the arriving at the lake less exciting now than in the past?
Ans. The writer used to visit the lake in Maine in childhood with father every year in month of
August. Now after many years, the writer visited the lake with his son. He was the victim of
conflict of personality. He sometimes recalls the memories of his childhood with father and
sometimes he sees himself in his son. Therefore, this time, writer is less exited.
7. How are the boat motors different in the present situation?
Ans. In the present situation, the boat motor produce unpleasant and irritating sound which mar
the beauty of lake.
8. The writer calls the lake as a ‘holy spot’. How does he further develop this idea?
Ans. The writer considers the lake as ‘holy spot’ because the peaceful and calm environment sooth
the mind and give illusion of stillness of time. One can forget his worries and feel relieved.
9. What kind of sensation persisted and grew in the mind of the writer?
Ans. While spending time at the lake, EB White feel dual existence of himself. Memories of past
haunts him. He recalls the memories of his father and feel that he is acting like his father.
Sometimes he sees himself in his son. Tis peculiar sensation persisted and grew in the mind
of the writer.
10. What is the central idea of the text?
Ans. Once More to the Lake" is an essay that reflects upon White's memories of visiting the lake
as a child and the memories he creates with his son many years later. White describes
experiencing a sense of childlike wonder that makes him feel like a child and his father at the
same time.
