Questions 26 to 31 carry 3 marks each

Q26. Find the coordinates of the points which divide the line segment joining A (–2, 2) and B (2, 8)
intofour equal parts.
Extra Mile Education & Training #8921076844
From the figure, it can be observed that points X,Y,Z are dividing the line segment in a
ratio 1:3,1:1,3:1 respectively.
Using Sectional Formula, we get,
Coordinates of X=1×2+3×(−2)/1+3,1×8+3×2/1+3)
=(−1,7/2)
Coordinates of Y=2−22,2+82=(0,5))
Coordinates of Z=(3×2+1×(−2)/1+3,3×8+1×2/1+3) =(1,13/2)

Q27. A triangle ABC is drawn to circumscribe a circle of radius 4 cm such that the segments BD and DC
into which BC is divided by the point of contact D are of lengths 8 cm and 6 cm, respectively. Find the
sides AB and AC.

We know that the length of any two tangents which are drawn from the same point to the circle is equal.
So,
CF = CD = 6 cm
BE = BD = 8 cm, AE = AF = x
Now, it can be observed that,
AB = EB+AE = 8+x
CA = CF+FA = 6+x
BC = DC+BD = 6+8 = 14
Now the semi-perimeter “s” will be calculated as follows
2s = AB+CA+BC
By putting the respective values, we get,
2s = 28+2x
s = 14+x

By solving this, we get,

= √(14+x)48x ……… (i)
Again, the area of △ABC = 2 × area of (△AOF + △COD + △DOB)
= 2×[(½×OF×AF)+(½×CD×OD)+(½×DB×OD)]
= 2×½(4x+24+32) = 56+4x …………..(ii)
Now from (i) and (ii), we get,
√(14+x)48x = 56+4x
Now, square both sides,
48x(14+x) = (56+4x)2
48x = [4(14+x)]2/(14+x)
48x = 16(14+x)
48x = 224+16x
32x = 224
x = 7 cm
So, AB = 8+x

Q29. If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle to intersect the other two sides in distinct points,
then prove that the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.
Consider a triangle ΔABCand draw a line PQ parallel to the side BC of ΔABC and intersect the sides AB
and AC in P and Q, respectively.
To prove: AP/PB = AQ/QC
Cosntruction:
Join the vertex B of ΔABC to Q and the vertex C to P to form the lines BQ and CP and then drop a
perpendicular QN to the side AB and draw PM⊥AC as shown in the given figure.

Proof:
Now the area of ∆APQ = 1/2 × AP × QN (Since, area of a triangle= 1/2× Base × Height)

Extra Mile Education & Training #8921076844

Similarly, area of ∆PBQ= 1/2 × PB × QN
area of ∆APQ = 1/2 × AQ × PM
Also,area of ∆QCP = 1/2 × QC × PM ………… (1)
Now, if we find the ratio of the area of triangles ∆APQand ∆PBQ, we have
area of △APQarea of △PBQ=12 × AP × QN12 × PB × QN=APPB
Similarly, area of △APQarea of △QCP=12 × AQ × PM12 × QC × PM=AQQC…(2)
According to the property of triangles, the triangles drawn between the same parallel lines and on the
same base have equal areas.
Therefore, we can say that ∆PBQ and QCP have the same area.
area of ∆PBQ = area of ∆QCP …………..(3)
Therefore, from the equations (1), (2) and (3), we can say that,
AP/PB = AQ/QC

Q30.The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 8 and number formed by reversing the digits is
lessthan the given number by 18. Find the number.

Solution : Let units digit = x ,Tens digit = y

So, the original number is = unit digit + 10 × tens digit = x + 10y
According to question,
Sum of digits = 8
so, x + y = 8 . . . (i)
On reversing the digits, new number = 10x + y
According to question
Difference = 18
⇒ x + 10y − (10x + y) = 18
⇒ x +10 y− 10x − y = 18
⇒ 9y − 9x = 18
⇒ y − x = 2 . . . (ii)
By adding eq. (i) and (iii)
2y = 10
y=10/2⇒y=5
Put the value of y in eq. (i)

Q33.The lower window of a house is at a height of 2 m above the ground and its upper window is 4 m
vertically above the lower window. At certain instant, the angles of elevation of a balloon from these
windows are observed to be 60° and 30°, respectively. Find the height of the balloon above the ground.
Solution

Let the window G be 2 m above the ground.

Window A be 4 m above the window G.
Balloon be at point B above the ground.
In ∆ABC,
tan30° = h/x ⇒1/√3 = h/x ⇒ x = h√3.....i
In ∆BGD,
tan60° = BD/GD⇒√3 = h + 4/x⇒x = h + 4/√3.....ii
From (i) and (ii) we get,
h√3 = h + 4/√3 ⇒ 3h = h + 4 ⇒ 2h = 4 ⇒ h = 2
Hence, the height of the ballon above the ground = 2 + 4 + 2 = 8 m

second cube’s surface to form a dome. Find (i) the ratio of the total surface area of the two new solids formed
(ii) volume of each new solid formed.
Here, diameter of hemisphere, d = 7 cm.

Then, radius of hemisphere, r = 7/2 cm = 3.5 cm

(i) Surface Area of Solid 1 = Surface Area of Cube + Curved Surface Area of Hemisphere - Base Area of
Hemisphere
