Accreditation in Healthcare

Public Health accreditation is one way to ensure that quality health care is being provided by

the facility to the community. The Public Health Accreditation Board is a non-profit organization

devoted to providing quality and continual advancements of local, state, territorial, and tribal

health departments. The goal of the PHAB that has been set forth by the Centers for Disease

Control and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is to provide accredited healthcare to at least

60% of the US population. Accreditation is based on six standard goals that are provided in

partnership or alone by each healthcare facility. These are:

1. advance the collective practice,

2. be simple and reduce redundancy,
3. minimize the burden on participating health departments,
4. reinforce local and state health departments’ roles and demonstrate shared
accountability,
5. apply to all sizes and all forms of governance structure, and
6. accord with American National Standards Institute principles. (Riley, Bender, & Lownik,

2012)

Accreditation is very important for various reasons. It allows for more income for the

facilities. Medicare is more likely to pay more and retain more patients in accredited hospitals

due to better care. This also means that the staff has higher performance standards to maintain

and uphold when it comes to patient care. With higher performance standards this means there

are more accurate diagnoses and faster triage and treatment of patients. This allows for shorter

hospital stays, faster recovery times, and streamlined cross-departmental processes when it

comes to the treatment of patients in the care of a facility (American College of Cardiology,

2024).

Many issues can arise with having only one governing body for accreditation. Manipulation

of the inspectors can happen. If the inspector is not impartial to the facility that is asking for

accreditation then they may be denied on false factors. A monopoly of one provider can happen.

If one provider is bigger in an area and can provide better care than a smaller facility due to

financial backing they may be able to get accredited over the smaller facility. If there is no other

entity to provide a check of the other many problems can arise (Nicklin, Fortune, Van

Ostenberg, O'Connor, & McCauley, 2017).
