Hello, my dear foreign friend! Today I will introduce you to the legal professions in
Belarus.
Haw to become a lawyer?
You can become a lawyer after studying at the university for 4 years. In the first and
second years of the Faculty of Law, the main focus is on the humanities, in the 3rd year
students can choose a specialization.
Let's learn more about each legal profession.
1. Judge
Let's start the list of professions with a judge, on whose shoulders the entire burden of
judicial power and responsibility for compliance with the laws are placed. You will not be
able to sit in the judge's chair immediately after graduation. Serious requirements are put
forward for applicants for this position: to have Belarusian citizenship, higher legal
education, age over 25 years, legal work experience, have no criminal record and pass a
qualification exam, and so on. Therefore, to become a judge, you will have to be patient and
earn the necessary experience.
2. Advocate
An advocate is engaged in legal protection of the interests and rights of people in court
or other authorities. There are also not the simplest requirements for a future advocate. For
example, in addition to citizenship, education and age, at least three years of professional
experience, a license, and passing a qualifying exam are required. The path to a law career is
not fast, but it is quite achievable.
3. Notary
Another position for which specialists with a legal education can apply. A notary is a
civil servant or a private person who has the authority to perform various notarial acts
(certifying transactions and powers of attorney, issuing various certificates, etc.). Unlike a
lawyer, he does not provide legal advice. Notaries work in notary offices and notary bureaus.
And the law also imposes special requirements on them.
4. Prosecutor
Conducting prosecutorial supervision, coordinating crime prevention activities,
participating in court proceedings, and supporting state prosecution during criminal
proceedings are only part of the functions performed by the prosecutor. The outcome of the
trial often depends on how responsibly he approaches the case.
5. Investigator
An investigator is an employee of the Prosecutor's Office (including the military) and
the investigative bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. His task is to investigate political,
economic and criminal offenses. How does this happen? The investigator initiates a criminal
case, manages the course of the investigation, identifies both evidence and mitigating
circumstances, uncovers the crime, establishes the circle of persons involved in it, the
motives, conditions and causes of the crime, and then provides an indictment to the
prosecutor.
6. Legal Adviser
Each large organization has its own specialist in legal matters — a legal adviser. He is
engaged in legal assistance, monitors that the legislation is respected both in relation to the
organization for which he works and in relation to the organizations with which it
cooperates. All paperwork and claims work is also assigned to the legal adviser.
University graduates with a law degree often choose a career as a legal adviser. Or
they gain experience in this way for further advancement on the career ladder. In large
companies where the legal department has more than a dozen people, legal advisers are
assigned categories: legal adviser, legal adviser of the second category, legal adviser of the
first category, lead legal adviser, head of department, head of the legal support department.
7. International lawyer
Among all branches of the legal profession, international lawyers are considered the
most prestigious specialists. They deal with legal issues of foreign economic and diplomatic
activities. Here you need to know perfectly well not only the laws of your country, but also
international law. And, of course, a foreign language, and preferably several.
The services of an international lawyer are used by commercial and non-profit
organizations, as well as a large number of state-owned companies. Being a pro, you can get
a job in a foreign company or even go to work abroad.
In addition, lawyers can teach, engage in politics, work in a bank, and write articles.
As you can see, graduates with a law degree have more than one career development option.
You will probably have to start small, but with due diligence, you can enter prestigious, high-
paying jobs. The main thing is that studying law should be your conscious choice and bring
pleasure.
Belarusian legal professionals are dedicated to maintaining justice and upholding the
law. Whether you’re considering a career in law or just curious, there’s much to discover.
