Over the course of history, human civilization has evolved in a fast and unprecedented
manner — from merely relying on the heat of fire to survive, to using machines, and now to
employing groundbreaking technologies to hasten the interconnected of people around the globe.
computation technologies, and the digitalization of almost every aspect of our life — social,
economic, and entertainment. However, all these advancements has its own risks. As our
technology improves, the methods and techniques of criminals also does. Now that we’re living
in a fast-moving, and interconnected environment, the scope and effects of crimes have also
heightened.
Cybercrime has infected various aspect of society, from healthcare and education, to
government and private services, especially against economic and business sector. From various
economic theories relating to cybercrime such as Rational Choice Theory, we have learned that
the primary motivation that drives cybercriminals to commit their misdeeds is financial factor.
This is the reason why most of the attacks are concentrated on the economic and business
sectors, like the recent Gcash issue that happened on November 2024. The connection between
cybercrime and economy is truly concerning as the global market is losing billions and trillions
of dollar every year. Moreover, people’s trust in businesses that deals with digital technology is
also plummeting whenever there’s a major system attack. This impediment brought by
cybercrime has forced the business sector to adapt and employ various techniques to improve
organizations alike — the fear it brings to everyone is also turning into a hindrance that can
hinder our further development (Arroyable & Arranz, 2024). Fortunately, we humans, did not
come this far by merely accepting whatever the nature throws at us, rather, we bite and fight
back. According to Tolossa (2023), in order to minimize the damages done by cyber attacks,
companies, organizations, and even nations are starting to allocate their funds and other
resources on improving cyber security. In Philippines, a law was enacted on 2012 to prevent and
minimize the effects of cyber crime. This law is also known as Cybercrime Prevention act of
2012, or Republic Act 10175. In addition, Philippine government is also supporting Cybercrime
Investigation Coordinating Center to locate every person involve in cyber crimes, as well as to
As large organization and the government themselves are trying to improve the overall
security against cyber attacks, ordinary civilians also have a role to play in this war against cyber
can ease their burden. Moreover, we can also protect ourselves by various ways such as not
indulging personal information in social media platforms where many people can see it,
avoiding clicking any suspicious links or files online, and promoting awareness regarding cyber
attacks.
Cybercrime has truly brought some devastating effects on its early years, mainly because
we are still oblivious to its threat. However, now that awareness about it is widely spread, we are
starting to develop ways to protect ourselves from these kinds of attacks. Although it has its own
drawbacks, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Block chain is undoubtedly is one of
the key factor that can aid the policy-maker in developing techniques and algorithms to prevent
and locate cybercriminals ( World Economic Forum, 2019) Furthermore, as the government and
private market sectors are starting to cooperate, we can now expect to witness a sharp decline of
