NRE Assignment 1, FA20-BEC-042
Task: Assignment 1
Question:
Write about how sports affect the economy of the nation on social and financial levels.
Give examples from major leagues such as the National Football League (NFL), FIFA
World Cup or any other significant competition that you believe will have a positive
impact on the lives of the common person.
Answer:
Sports have the power to serve more than the perceived benefits and purposes, especially
competitive sports that have tournaments and competitions all around the world, and majorly
contribute to the communities they impact/take place in. We’ll look at some of the financial
and social effects of sports in correlation with the economy.
Financial:
• From a financial point of view, major sports events and leagues wield significant
economic influence through various revenue streams, including ticket sales,
broadcasting rights, merchandise sales, and sponsorships. Notably, premier leagues
such as the National Basketball Association (NBA) bring in substantial annual
revenues, primarily driven by lucrative broadcasting agreements with networks such as
ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) and TNT (Turner Network
Television).
• The sports industry serves as a notable source of employment across diverse sectors,
encompassing event management, broadcasting, hospitality, and sports marketing.
These events necessitate the hiring of personnel at varying skill levels, from stadium
staff and security personnel to vendors, thereby creating employment opportunities
within communities.
• Hosting major sporting events entails significant investments in infrastructure,
including stadiums, transportation networks, and lodging facilities. Beyond stimulating
local construction industries, these investments yield enduring benefits for the
communities long after the events. Notably, events like the Olympic Games often bring
about the construction of sports facilities and transportation infrastructure, aiding local
development efforts.
• Sporting events attract tourists both domestically and internationally, promoting
increased expenditure on accommodations, dining, transportation, and entertainment.
Events such as the Tour de France (annual men's multiple-stage bicycle race) draw
enthusiasts from all around the world, contributing substantially to local economies
along the event route.
Social:
• Sports serve as a catalyst for community cohesion, fostering a sense of unity and
companionship among individuals from diverse backgrounds. Local sports clubs and
recreational leagues provide platforms for social interaction and teamwork, and in the
era of social media and the internet, this somewhat mitigates the issues of social
isolation and also reinforces social bonds.
• Participation in sports and physical activities promotes healthier lifestyles, saving
individuals from sedentary behaviours and associated health risks such as obesity and
cardiovascular diseases. Major sporting events like marathons often inspire individuals
to partake and thus, engage in physical exercise, thereby enhancing overall well-being.
• Sports play a pivotal role in nurturing the development of youth by imparting valuable
life skills, including teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and leadership. Engagement
in sports programs equips young individuals with confidence, resilience, and a sense of
responsibility, thereby contributing to their personal growth and future success.
• Accomplished athletes serve as role models for aspiring individuals, inspiring them to
pursue their aspirations and strive for excellence. Sporting achievements transcend
demographic barriers, offering hope and inspiration to individuals facing adversity.
An exemplary instance illustrating the profound impact of sports on both financial and social
dimensions is the FIFA Women's World Cup. Beyond its substantial economic contributions
through ticket sales, broadcasting rights, and sponsorships, the tournament serves as a platform
for promoting gender equality and empowering women globally. By showcasing the talent and
athleticism of female athletes, the Women's World Cup inspires future generations and
challenges prevalent stereotypes. Furthermore, the event fosters community engagement and
national pride, uniting individuals to rally behind their respective teams and celebrate the spirit
of competition.
In conclusion, sports play an important role in our lives, promoting human interaction and
activity. In today's fast-paced world, this aspect is often neglected. However, considering both
social and financial factors, sports have the potential to greatly benefit any community.
