LEC AS1: ICT AND IOT

1. Discuss the difference between ICT and IOT.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) covers all technical means

that are used to process information and aid communication. ICT includes network and
computer hardware and their software as well. In a broader sense, it refers to the use of
a wide range of digital technologies and services to convert, store, protect, transmit and
retrieve information. The Internet of Things (IOT) on the other hand refers to a
mechanism that enables certain things to be measured, recognized, and controlled in a
remote manner through the exchange of information by connecting them to the internet.
Basically, ICT involves linking information to the desired communication system or
network, while IOT is expanded ICT, where it is the use of novel data collection
technologies and linking these to a communication network.

2. Discuss the components of ICT and give examples each.

The following are the ten (10) primary components of ICT:

 Hardware: Physical devices and equipment that are used to process, store
and communicate information. Examples are computers, routers, mobile
devices, printers, scanners and more.
 Software: Applications, programs, and operating systems that contains
functionality for different computing tasks. Examples are application
software such as web browsers, word processors, databases and the like.
 Networks: Communication pathways allowing devices to connect and
communicate. There are wired networks and wireless networks. An
example of wired network is Ethernet while wireless networks are Wi-Fi
and cellular networks.
 Data Storage: Methods and facilities used to store and retrieve digital
information like hard drives, databases, cloud storage and the like.
 Internet and Communication Technologies: Tools used for exchanging
communication and information. These are commonly and widely used
nowadays which includes email, instant messaging, and social media
platforms.
 Cybersecurity and Data Protection: These are practices, tools, and
methods that are utilized as protection for digital information against
unauthorized access, theft or damage. Most common examples are
encryption, antivirus software, and security protocols.
 Information Systems: This are the integration of software, hardware, data
and human power to process and manage information within an
organization. It includes business information system like Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) and the like.
 ICT Services and Support: Support and maintenance available to users in
managing and using ICT resources effectively. These are help desk
services like IT support, training and consulting.
 Telecommunication Technologies: It enables long distance communication
using tools and systems like telephone, satellite communication, cellular
networks, and the like.
 Digital Media and Multimedia Technologies: These are techniques and
tools for creating, storing, and delivering multimedia content like audio,
video, graphics, and animation. These are software for image editing,
video editing, and multimedia production.

3. How does ICT affect your daily lives give a scenario?

ICT has been a big part of my daily life, probably most of us. I use ICT to
communicate faster and farther, even globally. Information technology helps users’ work
easier and better through the tools, systems, and applications it has offered. As a
college student in a modernized world, ICT plays a major role in my tasks and needs as
it shapes how I learn, manage my time, and socialize. I don’t think I can live the way I
want without ICT because I spend most of my time on my gadgets and on social media,
and I depend on technology. I use a laptop to study through the online learning
platforms, do schoolwork using educational apps and tools, and for entertainment
through social media and networking and communication purposes using email and
messaging apps, and I connect to the internet to do all of them. These things are
products of ICT, so it really is a big part of me.

4. How does the ICT impacts the society?

There is a substantial impact caused by ICT in society. This brought faster speed
and a more reliable mode of communication that is beneficial to all sectors, such as
education, banking, industry, and commerce. The ICT sector has fostered economic
growth and development through job creation, new industries, and increased
productivity. It aids in accessible information and education because it breaks down
geographical and social barriers, bridging the education gap through providing
opportunities for distance learning and quality education. Through different equipment
and tools, it has also helped in monitoring and sustaining the environment. I believe that
ICT is one of the biggest reasons for the modernized and globalized world we have.
