Power amplifiers
Power amplifiers
• It serves to supply power to the load, usually the last stage of
multistage amplifier system
• The efficiency of the power amplifier is the ratio of ac output power
to the power delivered by supply source which is dc
• Types of power amplifiers
Class A, class B, Class AB, class C

Properties of power transistors: a) large surface area

to deliver higher power.
b) Use smaller resistances to give higher current
c) Cooling required, fans are needed or use of metal
casing for cooling by convection.
Class A power amplifier: Direct coupled

Graphical methods are used for analysis of the power

transistors.
Class A power amplifier: Direct coupled
To achieve maximum ac power output, the quiescent point is chosen at the middle of the load line (optimum operating point).
For a maximum input signal, the operating point moves along the load line, between cut-off and saturation.
At cut-off : Collector voltage is maximum: Vcmax & collector current is minimum: Icmin
At saturation : Collector voltage is minimum: Vcmin & collector current is maximum: Icmax

As the operating point swings equally on either side of the Q point, the amplitude of ac collector current and voltage
Class A power amplifier: Direct coupled
The dc power is dissipated in the load in absence of signal.
ac power dissipated in the transistor, Pac =
Class A power amplifier: Transformer coupled

When load resistance is directly connected to the output circuit then dc

current also flows through the load, which may be undesirable for the load
which works only with ac input. This also leads to wastage of power.

Therefore at the collector side a transformer is connected and load is

connected at the secondary of the transformer instead of directly coupling it
with the transistor. When load resistance differs from the output resistance of
the transistor, the load can be matched with the source for maximum power
transfer by adjusting the turn ratio, n of the transformer.
Class A power amplifier: Transformer coupled
The load line corresponding to is the ac load line. It has a slope of
Numerical
A CE class A power amplifier is coupled to a load resistance of 12 ohm
by a transformer of primary to secondary turns ratio of 8:1. The signal
has a peak swing of 250mA. Calculate the output power
1. Class A transformer coupled amplifier has ac output power of 5W, when load resistance is 4 ohm. If operating
point is located for maximum symmetrical swing & Vcc =20V. Calculate
a) Transformer turn ratio b)peak output current c) operating point d) conversion efficiency
