Samsara Summary
Samsara Summary
Why Samsara?
In 2023 Z-Tech drivers were involved in 38 Road Traffic Accidents, with 1 major accident causing life changing
injuries, where a cyclist lost their leg and the driver received a prison sentence.
Z-Tech have taken the step to further invest in Samsara Driver Safety System to:
- Improve driver safety with education and training
- Lower Road Risk
- Optimise vehicle safety
The Samsara driver safety system is connected to the vehicle using the on-board diagnostic port. The system uses
artificial intelligence (AI) and G-Force to detect unsafe driver behaviours.
An event will only be generated when the vehicle is travelling over 5mph and can be triggered by:
- Obstructing the camera
- Mobile phone usage
- Harsh events (turning, braking, accelerating)
- Road Traffic Incident
- Smoking/Vaping
- Distracted driving
1. Proactive in cab coaching alerts generated by AI in real-time to correct driver behaviour – “Distracted”,
“Harsh Event Detected”, “Your Seatbelt is Unbuckled”
2. A still image or video clip (max 10 seconds) is uploaded to the portal
3. The image or clip will be reviewed by the Z-Tech fleet team to determine what action needs to be taken
a. Needs Coaching – learning/coaching opportunity to increase education and is led by the line
manager
b. Needs recognising - positive safety alert for defensive driving e.g. avoiding an accident
c. Dismissed – after reviewing the image/clip we have deemed it not to be a safety event and
dismissed the alert.
Line Managers will decide on what action to take in the event of repeat behaviours.
Safety Dashboard
Each individual driver has a safety dashboard with a safety score starting at 100. Each safety event, whether it be
speeding, harsh events, mobile phone usage etc. drops your safety score. It is possible to increase your score by
receiving positive safety alerts and improving overall driver behaviour.
As we continue to roll out Samsara across more vehicles, line managers will be added to the system as coaches
and drivers will be able to log in and see their own dashboard including any safety events that have been
determined to need coaching or recognising. Drivers will also be able to see relatively where they sit in relation to
the Business Unit and Z-Tech as a whole.
Driver Privacy and GDPR
A maximum of 10 seconds of video is uploaded when an event occurs. This is to include the time when the event
occurs and immediately before and after in order to provide accurate context of the event. From the utilisation of
Samsara so far, majority of the clips that have been uploaded to the portal last only 2-3 seconds.
Only those with a legitimate interest in driver safety can request additional footage for the previous 120 driver hours.
Reasons to request extra footage include:
- Investigating a member of the public complaint against a Z-Tech Driver
- In the event of a Road Traffic Accident to gain further context
If footage of a Road Traffic Accident is requested by the Police or Insurance Company, the request must be made
to the M Group Road Risk team who will work with the M Group Data Protection Officer to ensure that the footage is
GDPR compliant (e.g. blurring of faces).
To further protect the privacy of Z-Tech drivers, there is NO livestream or audio capabilities for the Samsara
cameras and all footage is deleted from the portal after 6 months.
