Christmas crackers originated in the UK and the tradition is carried on in many former
colonies and other Common Wealth countries.
The lesson can start off with a test-teach-test activity. Students work in pairs or groups to
label the pictures. After about five minutes, get feedback from the students. The teacher
teaches the vocabulary with the aid of flash cards.

Ask students to circle any of the Christmas traditions they’ve just learned that they see in
the video.
The video shows Mr. Bean
1. put up Christmas cards;
2. he takes out Christmas crackers;
3. there’s a picture of holly on the crackers;
4. he puts up a Christmas tree;
5. puts out the Christmas stocking;
6. and finally some carolers entertain him as he’s about to go to bed.
Ask students if they follow any of these traditions at home during the Christmas holidays.
Tell students that they’ll be making Christmas crackers.
Christmas crackers usually contain a small toy, a paper crown and a slip of paper containing
jokes and some trivia. The crackers are pulled before the Christmas lunch or dinner is
eaten. The person with the bigger portion of the cracker gets the toy. Everyone reads their
really corny jokes and silly trivia. See the videos here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Your Christmas crackers can be filled with some candy instead.
