Autodesk Education Suite
2012 Overview 1
Autodesk® Education Suites 2012 products provide educational institutions access to an array
of Autodesk products. For a single, affordable annual fee, this flexible, subscription-based
license program allows educational institutions to use popular Autodesk design tools while
reducing the time required for managing licensed software.

Preparing for Installation

This section provides background information regarding the installation of the
Education Suite products, prerequisite conditions that need to be met before
installation begins, the types of installations, and a general understanding of
licensing types.
Autodesk Education Suites contains a number of individual Autodesk products,
with the additional option to download Autodesk Impression 2012. All of the
Education Suite 2012 products have their own installers that offer one of three
options: network licensed, multi-seat stand-alone, or stand-alone installation.
While all products can be installed using the stand-alone method, the installation
type you use depends on which products you want to install, and the type of
license you purchased. The recommended installation method for classroom
or lab environments is network licensed or multi-seat stand-alone. Both of these
methods recommend that you use the deployment wizard to create
administrative images.
Deployments are stored in a shared folder and allow you to install the product
on systems that have access to the shared folder. For more information on
creating a shared folder, see Create a Network Share on page 34. The deployment
wizard can be run directly from each product’s disk. For more information about
deployments, see Create Deployments on page 33.

Installation Prerequisites
Before installing any of the products in the Autodesk Education Suites package,
it is recommended that you make sure the following conditions have been
met:

■ For each product you plan to install, you have reviewed the system
requirements. See System Requirements on page 6.

■ You understand the product licenses you’ve ordered. See Installation and
Licensing Types on page 7.

■ You have an understanding of administrative permissions. See

Administrative Permissions on page 7.

■ You know how you’re going to personalize the products during activation.
See Consistent Product and User Information on page 10.

■ You have closed all other programs and temporarily disabled anti-virus
software. See Minimize Installation Failure on page 10.

■ You have created a distribution plan for products once they’re installed
on your primary system. See Prepare for a Network Deployment on page
33.

■ You have created shared folders for each product you plan to install using
the deployments. See Create a Network Share on page 34.

■ You understand how to use imaging software to distribute your software.

See Distribute Products Using Ghosting on page 41 for more information.

Product List
The Autodesk Education Master Suite includes all of the Education products
listed in Table 1. Other suites include a subset of these products. If you are
missing any items, contact your reseller.
In order to avoid installation problems, it is strongly suggested that you install
the products in the order listed below. If you are installing Autodesk Vault, it
should be installed on a server operating system. If it must be installed with
other products, install Vault first.

Administrative Permissions
To install Autodesk Education Suites products, you must have administrative
privileges on each computer where the products are to be installed. If you are
unsure of your permission level, see your system administrator for more
information.

Installation and Licensing Types

The type of licensing you have purchased dictates the type of installation
method to use. For products that allow you to create deployments, you will
be prompted to specify one of the following installation types.

Administrative Permissions | 7
WARNING For deployments, the license type you choose on the installer’s
Configuration panel, network or stand-alone license, must be used for all products
in your deployment. If you select products that do not support the type of license
you purchased, you will not be able to activate those products.

Network License
Network licensed products are recommended for classrooms and lab
environments.
You install the program to computers with the files and registry entries that
allow the program to communicate with the Network License Manager. You
also define the location of the Network License Manager so that the licenses
can be accessed.
When you install network licensed products, you do not have to worry about
activation. Systems running products that use a network license do not require
activation because the Network License Manager manages all requests for
running a network application.
Another advantage of network licensing is that you can install products on
more systems than the number of licenses you have purchased. For example,
you purchased a network license for 25 seats, but you installed the product
on 30 systems in the classroom. Once the Network License Manager is set up
and started, students can log on to any one of the 30 systems as long as the
maximum of number of active licenses (25) is not exceeded. When someone
exits the program, the server frees up a license for someone else.

Stand-Alone License
A stand-alone installation requires you to physically move from computer to
computer to install, register, and activate each program individually.
Registration of stand-alone products occurs the first time the application is
launched and registration information must be entered manually during the
registration process. In a classroom or lab environment there are two ways to
handle these products.

■ If the systems are not networked, install the product disks separately on
each system.

■ If the systems are networked, copy the product disks or create a deployment
in a shared folder on the primary server and then run the setup.exe file in
the shared folder on the server from each satellite system.

8 | Chapter 1 Autodesk Education Suite 2012 Overview

NOTE It is recommended to install stand-alone products directly from the
distribution media. It is also recommended to create deployments for multi-seat
stand-alone and network licensed products.

Multi-Seat Stand-Alone License

If your facility is not networked, but all the systems can connect to the Internet,
you can opt for multi-seat stand-alone licensed products.
Multi-seat stand-alone installations are similar to stand-alone installations,
except that all of your products use the same serial number for activation.
Unlike network licensing, the multi-seat license specifies the maximum number
of computers on which the license can be installed. With multi-seat stand-alone
installation, you can still use the deployment wizard to create Administrative
images and deployment shortcuts.
You can request a change to the licensing you’ve purchased by contacting
your Autodesk Authorized Education Reseller. You can change from multi-seat
stand-alone licensing to network licensing and you can also increase the
number of seats for your existing license.
Registration information is pre-configured during the creation of the
deployment image; this pre-configuration ensures duplicate registration data
for all the computers. As long as a product is installed using the deployment
image shortcut and all the systems have Internet access, you will only be
prompted to activate the first product in the suite. Products launched after
your first activation will be automatically activated.

Locate Your Serial Number and Product Key

When you install Autodesk Education Suites products, you are prompted for
your serial number and product key on the Product Information panel of the
installer.
The serial number and product key are located on the outside of the product
packaging, or in the Autodesk® Upgrade and Licensing Information email.
Make sure to have these available before you install the program so that you
don't have to stop in the middle of the installation.
The serial number must contain a three-digit prefix followed by an eight-digit
number. The product key consists of five characters.
The information you enter is permanently retained with the product. Because
you can't change this information later without uninstalling, take care when
entering the information. To review this product information later, on the

Locate Your Serial Number and Product Key | 9

InfoCenter toolbar, click the drop-down arrow next to the Help button (the
question mark). Then click About - Product Information.

Consistent Product and User Information

It is very important that the product and user information (your school,
classroom or lab environment contact information) you supply when
registering and activating your products is consistent across all Autodesk
products. When you register and activate products, you are required to enter
information on the electronic registration (EREG) site. If you enter this data
incorrectly or inconsistently, you can run into activation problems.
For example, Mr. J. Smith works at a school and has received some education
suite software. He installs one of the products on his personal system and
activates the product using his personal information. He then gives that
product to a system administrator to install on the school’s network. The
system administrator attempts to register and activate the product using the
school’s data.
Since the software license has already been registered and activated by Mr.
Smith, the software on the school’s network cannot be registered and activated
unless Mr. Smith’s exact personal information is re-used.
If you do not know your product or user data, you should contact your
Autodesk Reseller or the Autodesk Business Center. For contact and support
information, see Contact and Support on page 47.

Minimize Installation Failure

The installation process of many of the Autodesk Education Suites products
can stop if some applications (such as Microsoft Outlook or virus-checking
programs) are running. Before installing products, it is recommended that
you close all running applications and temporarily disable virus checking
utilities.

TIP If you encounter any MSI (Windows installer) errors during installation, further
information can be found in the Autodesk Support Knowledge base or the Microsoft
Support Knowledge base.

Documentation
If you are new to the education suite products, please read this entire guide
before beginning your installation process. To access additional documentation,

Stand-Alone Installation
2
All Autodesk Education Suites products allow for stand-alone installations. Follow the steps
below to install your suite products using the stand-alone installation method.

Installing Products
Two installation methods are available:

■ Using the product disks, move from system to system installing the products.

■ If the environment is networked, create a network share for the product and
copy the contents of the disks to the shared folder. From each computer,
run the setup.exe file from the primary server.

NOTE The following procedure provides a general outline of the individual

installation process. In some cases, the product installers will differ. In those cases,
follow the on-screen installation instructions.

To install products

1 Insert the Autodesk® product disk(s) into the computer’s drive. On the
AutoPlay dialog, select Install or run program > Run Autorun.exe or Setup.exe.

2 On the first installer panel, select a language for the installation instructions.
This can be different from the product language, which you will select
later. Click Install.

3 Review the Autodesk software license agreement for your country or region.
Click I Accept, and then click Next.

4 On the Product Information page, enter your Education Suite’s serial

number and product key, and then click Next.

13
WARNING After you click Next, you cannot change the information entered
on this page unless you uninstall the product.

5 On the Configure Installation panel, select the products to install, and

the product language. If you want to configure the settings for a product
to change them from the default values, click the product box in the list
to open the configuration panel. After making all desired changes, click
the product box to close the configuration panel.

16
Network Licensing
3
If you plan to install your products on a network, use the Network License Manager.
The Network License Manager determines whether a license is granted or denied to an
application that is requesting a license. If a license is available, the application starts and a
license is checked out. If a license is not available, the application will not start and you will
not be able to run the application until a license is returned to the license manager.
If you are not familiar with network licensing, please read the entire Autodesk Licensing Guide
for further details before you attempt to set up a network license server. To access the guide,
select the Installation Help option on the installer. You can also view the guide from the product’s
disk by navigating to the documentation (docs) folder. For more information about access to
documentation, see Documentation on page 10.

Plan Your Network Licensing

This section contains information that you need to know before you set up a
network license server. The section includes information about supported license
server models, license operation and availability, network license file definitions
and parameters, license file examples, license types and behaviors, and the
license server heartbeat signal.

Plan Your License Server Configuration

You must decide which license server model to use for managing your Autodesk®
product licenses on a server. Autodesk supports the following network license
server models:

■ Single license server model

■ Distributed license server model

17
■ Redundant license server model

Single License Server Model

In the single license server model, the Network License Manager is installed
on a single server, so license management and activity is restricted to this
server. A single license file represents the total number of licenses available
on the server.
Advantages of the Single License Server Model

■ Because all license management takes place on a single server, you have
just one point of administration and one point of failure.

■ Of the three license server models, this configuration requires the least
amount of maintenance.

Disadvantage of the Single License Server Model

■ If the single license server fails, the Autodesk product cannot run until the
server is back online.

Distributed License Server Model

In the distributed license server model, licenses are distributed across more
than one server. A unique license file is required for each server. To create a
distributed license server, you must run the Network License Manager on each
server that is part of the distributed server pool.
Advantages of the Distributed License Server Model

■ Servers can be distributed across a wide area network (WAN); they do not
need to exist on the same subnet.

■ If one server in the distributed server pool fails, the licenses on the
remaining servers are still available.

■ If you need to replace a server in the distributed server pool, you do not
need to rebuild the entire pool.

■ Server replacement is easier than in a redundant server pool, where you

must reactivate the entire pool.

18 | Chapter 3 Network Licensing

Disadvantage of the Distributed License Server Model

■ If a server in the distributed server pool fails, the licenses on that server
are unavailable.

■ This model can require more time for setup and maintenance than other
models.

Redundant License Server Model

In the redundant license server model, three servers are configured to
authenticate license files. Licenses can be monitored and issued as long as at
least two license servers are still functional. The Network License Manager is
installed on each server, and the license file on each server is the same.
In the redundant license server model, all servers must reside on the same
subnet and have consistent network communications. (Slow, erratic, or dial-up
connections are not supported.)
Advantage of the Redundant License Server Model

■ If one of the three servers fails, all licenses that are managed in the server
pool are still available.

Disadvantages of the Redundant License Server Model

■ If more than one server fails, no licenses are available.

■ All three servers must reside on the same subnet and have reliable network
communications. The redundant server pool does not provide network
fault tolerance.

■ If one of the three servers is replaced, the complete redundant server pool
must be rebuilt.

■ If your Autodesk product supports license borrowing, and licenses are

borrowed from a redundant license server pool, you must restart the license
server after you stop the Network License Manager.

How Your License Works

In this section, you learn about license operation and availability, the license
file, license types and behaviors, and the heartbeat signal.

How Your License Works | 19

License Operation and Availability
When you start an Autodesk product, it requests a license from the license
server through the TCP/IP network. If the number of available licenses has
not been exceeded, the Network License Manager assigns a license to the
computer, and the number of available licenses on the license server is reduced
by one.
Likewise, when you exit a product, the Network License Manager frees a license
for another user. If you run multiple sessions of an Autodesk product on an
individual computer, only one license is used. When the last session is closed,
the license is released.
The following three processes manage the distribution and availability of
licenses:

■ License manager daemon (lmgrd.exe) handles the original contact with the
application, and then passes the connection to the vendor daemon. By
using this approach, a single lmgrd.exe daemon can be used by multiple
software vendors to provide license authentication. The lmgrd.exe daemon
starts and restarts the vendor daemons as needed.

■ Autodesk vendor daemon (adskflex.exe) tracks the licenses that are checked
out and the computers that are using them. Each software vendor has a
unique vendor daemon to manage vendor-specific licensing.

NOTE If the adskflex.exe vendor daemon terminates for any reason, all users lose
their licenses until lmgrd.exe restarts the vendor daemon or the problem causing
the termination is resolved.

■ License file is a text file that has vendor-specific license information.

Interpreting Your License File

The network license file you receive from Autodesk contains licensing
information required for a network installation. You obtain license file data
when you register your Autodesk product.
The license file contains information about network server nodes and vendor
daemons. It also contains an encrypted digital signature that is created when
Autodesk generates the file.
The license file configures network license servers to manage licenses. When
creating a deployment, the network license server names are specified so that

20 | Chapter 3 Network Licensing

each product instance knows which servers to contact to obtain a license.
That network license servers must be accessible to every user who runs one
or more products that require a network license.
The following table defines each license file parameter. For more information,
see the License Administration Guide, installed with the Network License
Manager.

License Types and Behaviors

Autodesk supports dynamic product usage and license behaviors. This means
that you can purchase a specific type of behavior with a specific license and
change that license at a later date without having to uninstall and reinstall
the Autodesk product.

NOTE All license types are available as stand-alone and network except for the
Student Portfolio license, which is available as stand-alone only.

License types include the following:

■ Commercial. A license for a product that was purchased commercially.

■ Not for Resale. A license for a product that is not sold commercially. Not
for Resale products are for evaluation or demonstration purposes only and
may not be used for commercial or production use.

■ Educational (EDU)/Institution. A license designed specifically for

educational institutions.

■ Student Portfolio. A license for students who are using an Autodesk product
as part of their curriculum.

License behaviors are as follows:

■ Permanent. Enables permanent use of an Autodesk product.

■ Term Extendable. Enables access to an Autodesk product for a limited time.

The term can be extended at any time.

■ Term Non-Extendable. Enables an Autodesk product for a limited time.

The term cannot be extended.

How Your License Works | 23

Heartbeat Signal
When an Autodesk product is running, it communicates with the license
server at regular intervals using a communication method known as the
“heartbeat” signal. If the heartbeat signal is lost, the server tries to reconnect.
If the server cannot reconnect, the user receives a license error.
If the product stops working because it has lost a connection to the server,
you must shut down the product, and then restart it. If the problem causing
the original loss of the heartbeat signal is resolved and there are available
licenses on the server, the program can be restarted.

Install the Network License Manager

The Network License Manager is used to configure and manage the license
servers. During product installation, the installer prompts you for information
about the license manager, such as license server model and server name(s).
You can install the Network License Manager before or after installing the
products that will use it. Network License Manager must configure the license
servers before any products can obtain licenses and start running.
If an earlier version of the Network License Manager is already installed on
the computer, you should upgrade by installing the Autodesk Network License
Manager into the folder where the older version was located.

To install your Network License Manager

1 In the Autodesk installer, click Install Tools & Utilities.

2 On the Configure Installation panel, select Autodesk Network License

Manager and accept the default installation path (C:\Program Files\Autodesk
Network License Manager\) or click Browse to specify a different path. If
you enter a path that does not exist, a new folder is created using the
name and location you provide.

WARNING Do not install the Network License Manager on a remote drive.

When you install the Network License Manager files, you must provide a path
to a local drive. You must specify the drive letter; the universal naming
convention (UNC) is not permitted.

3 Click Install.

4 On the Installation Complete panel, click Finish to close the installer.

FLEXnet Configuration Tools

The Network License Manager uses FLEXnet® license management technology
from Flexera Software. FLEXnet provides administrative tools that help to
simplify management of network licenses. You can use FLEXnet tools to
monitor network license status, reset licenses lost to a system failure,
troubleshoot license servers, and update existing license files.

Utilities for License Server Management

FLEXnet provides two utilities for managing the license server. These tools
are located in the C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager folder.
®
lmtools.exe Provides a Microsoft Windows graphical user interface for
managing the license server.

lmutil.exe Provides a set of command-line options for managing the license

server.

You can use lmtools.exe or lmutil.exe to perform the following server

management tasks:

■ Start, stop, and restart the server.

■ Configure, update, and reread the license file.

■ Diagnose system or license problems.

■ View server status, including active license status.

FLEXnet Configuration Tools | 27

The Options File
Another component of FLEXnet is the Options file. You create this file to set
specific configuration options. For information about creating and using an
options file, see the Network Licensing Guide.
Use the Options file to set parameters for the following server-related features:
Report log file A compressed, encrypted file is created that generates accurate
usage reports on license activity for use by SAMreport-Lite. For more
information about SAMreport-Lite, see the SAMreport-Lite User's Guide, which
you can access on the Documentation tab of the menu browser.

License borrowing If your Autodesk product supports the license borrowing

feature, you can allow users to borrow an Autodesk product license from a
network license server so that they can use the product without being
connected to the license server. A license can be borrowed for a limited time.

License timeout With license timeout, you can set a timeout period on your
license server for one Autodesk product at a time. When set, license timeout
returns a license to the license server when a connection with the computer
is lost, or if a license is checked out but the Autodesk product is idle on a
computer for longer than the timeout period you define.

License timeoutall With license timeoutall, you can set a timeout period on
your license server that applies to all Autodesk products installed on your
computer. When set, license timeout returns a license to the license server
when a connection with the computer is lost, or if a license is checked out
but the Autodesk product is idle on a computer for longer than the timeout
period you define.

For specific information about using FLEXnet configuration tools, see the
FLEXnet documentation by navigating to C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network
License Manager\Docs\FlexUser\LicenseAdministration.pdf.

Licensing Multiple Products

When you install an Autodesk product, it is issued its own license file. You
can manage license files for more than one Autodesk product by combining
license files. To combine multiple license files for Autodesk products, you
must add lines from the new license file to the existing license file.

28 | Chapter 3 Network Licensing

NOTE Products included in the Education Suites do not require that you combine
license files. You can, however, combine your commercial license files with
Education Suite license files if you wish.

Before you begin combining licenses, back up your existing LIC file and stop
the license server. Stopping the server will ensure you have a cleaner update.

NOTE Do not configure a separate service for the new Autodesk product.

1 Open an ASCII text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad.

Do not use a word processor because it will add extra data to the license
file that will make the license invalid.

2 Open your product license file.

3 Next, open one of your other license files in a separate Notepad session.

4 In the license file, select all the text starting at the line beginning with
‘INCREMENT’.

5 Copy the text and paste into the product license file.
Here is an example of a completed license file for combined Autodesk
product versions:

When combining additional licenses for the same Autodesk product, you
must obtain a new license file for the total number of licenses with that
feature code, not just the new ones. For example, do not combine two
different AutoCAD® 2012 license files into one file. Obtain one new
license file that contains the required total number of AutoCAD 2012
licenses.

7 Click on the Server Status tab and check the status of the server to make
sure it is running.

8 Click on the Start/Stop/Reread tab. Click the Reread License File button
to make sure the changes to the license file have taken effect.
If Reread passes, you should see "Reread Server License File Completed"
printed at the bottom of the LMTOOLS utility dialog. If it fails, you should
see "Reread Server Failed" instead. If Reread fails, ensure that the correct
.lic file is being referenced in the Config Services tab, and ensure that the
license files were combined correctly.

9 Click File ➤ Exit.

Create Deployments
4
A deployment provides an efficient way to install one or more Autodesk products with a
standard configuration on multiple workstations. The files required for the installation process
are stored on the network, in an administrative image, in a folder to which all users have
shared access. To install the products, users navigate to the deployment folder and double-click
an installer shortcut (.LNK file).
This section explains how to use the Autodesk installer to create deployments for efficient
distribution of programs. For more detailed information about deployments, click the
Installation Help link on your product installer and consult the Network Administrator’s Guide.

Set Up and Create a Deployment

The deployment process provides several options for creating and customizing
your deployments, so you should set aside ample time to research the process.
To be successful, it is recommended that you review the following checklist and
information before you begin.

Prepare for a Network Deployment

Complete the following preliminary tasks before creating a network deployment.

Deployment Checklist

Review the system requirements by clicking the System Requirements link in the
installer. Confirm that your network, servers, and client workstations meet these
requirements.

Understand the general process for installing the type of license you have pur-
chased. For a network license deployment, you should know the license server
name(s) and the type of license server model that was specified at the time of
license purchase.

33
Deployment Checklist

Install and activate any network administrator tools and utilities. For example,
if you are using a network license, install the Network License Manager from the
installer.

Locate your product serial number and product key. These are found on the
outside of the product packaging, or in an email message if you downloaded
your product from an Autodesk site.

Identify a network location for deployments, and create a shared folder to contain
deployments.

If your product has language options, decide which language to use for each
deployment.

NOTE Languages can be included when you create a deployment, or when you
create a new deployment configuration, but not when you modify a deployment.

Determine whether to create installation log files on individual workstations, in

the deployment folder, or both.

Determine whether the deployment should use silent mode, installing applications
without prompting the end user for any input.

NOTE When the program is installed from a deployment using silent mode,
users’ systems automatically reboot without warning when the installation is
complete.

Determine whether to install each application with a default or custom config-

uration. If you want to use a custom configuration, identify any applicable settings
such as defined search paths, locations of support files, and whether to automat-
ically install service packs.

Create a Network Share

A network share is a folder to which all users on the network have read-write
access. Deployments are stored in this folder, and you point users to this
location to install the programs in your suite.
A shared folder is required for network license and multi-seat stand-alone
methods of installation.

34 | Chapter 4 Create Deployments

NOTE You must have Full Control permissions set for your shared folder when
you are creating your deployment images. Read permissions are necessary to
access the network share and administrative permissions on the workstation where
the program is deployed.

To create a network share folder

1 On the desktop of a network server, create a folder named Deployments.

2 Right-click the Deployments folder and click Share and Security (or Sharing).

3 In the <folder name> Properties dialog box, Sharing tab, select Share This
Folder.

4 Specify a Share Name, such as Deployments, if necessary.

5 Click the Permissions button. In the Permissions dialog box make sure
Full Control is active. Click OK.
In Vista, right-click the Deployments folder and then click Share. In the
Properties dialog box, select Sharing and then Advanced Sharing to share
the folder. Click the Permissions button to make sure Full Control is
active. Click OK.
In Windows 7, right-click the Deployments folder and then click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Sharing tab and then click Advanced
Sharing. In the Advanced Sharing dialog box, select Share This Folder.
Click the Permissions button to make sure Full Control is active. Click
OK

6 These steps are important when creating your deployment images.

7 Click OK or Close to close the Properties dialog box.

8 For each product you plan to install, create a subfolder in the Deployments
folder. Name each folder with the pertinent product name.

Configure Individual Products

You can create a deployment that uses the default product settings, or you
can configure the settings for any product to be included in the deployment.
The following configuration options are examples of some common settings
for different Autodesk products.

■ Installation Type (Typical or Custom)

■ Installation Folders for Support Content

Configure Individual Products | 35

■ Search Paths and File Locations

■ Install Additional Files

■ Specify User Preferences

■ Include Service Packs

■ Configure Access to Online Resources

Before creating a deployment, you should review the available settings for
products in your suite, and determine whether to accept the default settings,
or to configure some of the settings for your users when you create the
deployment. Any settings you change for the deployment will apply
consistently to the installations for all users.
The best source of information on product settings is available from the product
installer. Click the Installation Help link, and open the configuration guide
for the product. The configuration guides for all products are intended to
supplement the general information in the Network Administrator’s Guide,
which is also accessible from the Installation Help link.

Creating a Deployment
If you do not plan on customizing the settings for any Autodesk products in
your deployment, you can create a default deployment. Otherwise, you can
create a custom deployment, and specify the settings that will apply to each
installed instance of the products.
The following procedure covers both default and custom deployments.

To create a deployment
1 On the product’s initial installer panel, click Create Deployment.

2 On the Create Deployment panel, specify the deployment name,

administrative image location, and whether your target systems are 32
or 64 bit.
■ In the administrative image path field, enter the path to your existing
shared network location, or use the Browse button to navigate to that
location.

■ In the Installation Settings area, choose if you want the deployment

to create a network log and/or a client log, if you want to run the

36 | Chapter 4 Create Deployments

client installation in silent mode, without any prompts to the users
during installation.
■ If you choose to create a network log file, the default location for
the log is in a subfolder of the administrative image path. You can
specify a different location if desired.

NOTE The folder where the network log resides must be a shared
folder where users who install the program have Change permissions.
Otherwise, successes or failures for user installations cannot be written
to the log file.

Click Next.

3 Review the Autodesk software license agreement for your country or

region. You must accept this agreement to proceed with the deployment
process. Choose your country or region, click I Accept, and then click
Next.

NOTE If you do not agree to the terms of the license and want to terminate
the installation, click Cancel.

4 On the Product Information panel, enter the Education Suite serial

number and product key (both can be found on the outside of the suite’s
product packaging). Green check marks indicate that the numbers are
valid.

NOTE The information you enter here is permanent and is displayed in the
Help menu on your computer.

5 Select your license type. If you have a network license, specify the license
server model (single, distributed, or redundant) and add the server name(s)
to the configuration. Click Next.

6 On the Configure panel, select the products to include in the deployment.

If you want to change any settings for a product, creating a custom
deployment, click the product box to open the configuration panel.
When the configuration is complete, collapse the configuration panel
and click Create to start creating the deployment files in the shared folder.
Progress bars and text messages on the installer track the stages of this
activity.

7 On the Deployment Configuration Complete page, click Finish.

Creating a Deployment | 37
Modify a Deployment
After a deployment is created, it may be necessary to modify the deployment
for some client workstations. You can apply a patch or select various custom
files that are not part of the base administrative image. You can also perform
modifications such as changing the installation directory from drive C to drive
D.
Inside each deployment folder is a Tools folder that contains a shortcut (.LNK
file) named Create & Modify a Deployment. You can use this shortcut to

■ Create a new deployment configuration

■ Create a new deployment configuration that uses an existing deployment

as a template

■ Modify the configuration of an existing deployment

If your original administrative image was set to include only products required
by the deployment configuration, then your options for creating or modifying
the deployment are limited. In particular, you cannot add products to the
deployment that are not in the original administrative image. Conversely, if
your product administrative image was not set to include only the required
products, then it includes all product files. As a result, you can add products
when you modify this deployment or when you create new deployment
configurations.

To modify a deployment
1 Open the shared network folder where you originally chose to place your
product deployment.

2 In the Tools folder, double-click the Create & Modify a Deployment

shortcut.
This re-opens the deployment part of the installer.

3 Click through the deployment panels and make the necessary changes.

4 After all the modifications have been made, click Create.

Point Users to the Administrative Image

When you have completed the deployment process, you are ready to have
users install the newly created or modified deployment. Notify your users of

the location of the administrative image, where they can double-click the
deployment shortcut to start product installation. If you chose installation
by silent mode, you should also test whether the installation process
automatically restarts the user’s computer without warning. If so, you should
advise your users that they should not work on documents during installation.

Distribute Products Using
Ghosting 5
Imaging software, such as Symantec™ Corporation’s Norton™ Ghost™, is used to create a
master image of a computer where Autodesk® products have been installed. The master image
is then replicated to other computers throughout your facility.
Ghosted images can be transferred to identical workstations; images must be specially tailored
for non-identical workstations. Make sure you are familiar with the entire imaging process
before you attempt to duplicate an image onto other workstation.
Using imaging software can also result in the following situations:

■ Conflicts with product licensing

■ Incomplete product installations

NOTE If you are experiencing licensing instability in a SATA RAID environment, using
imaging software to distribute Autodesk products can cause product activation problems.
You may receive an “Activation code limit exceeded” message if you attempt to activate
products in a SATA RAID environment.

Use a Master Image to Distribute Multi-Seat Stand-Alone Products to Multiple Systems

A master image can be used to distribute multi-seat stand-alone products to multiple systems
in your classroom or lab environment.

NOTE When using Norton Ghost, you must use the -ib switch to include the boot sector in your
master image. Consult your imaging software for more details on including the boot sector as part
of the master image.

1 Following the installation for your multi-seat stand-alone products, create a stand-alone
deployment for installing multi-seat stand-alone products.

41
2 Using the deployment shortcut that was created for the product, install the Autodesk
product on the system to be imaged.

NOTE If you anticipate the need to re-image computers, do not run or activate any products
on the primary system until the master image has been created, distributed, and tested on
at least one other system.

If you want to test an application, you can create a temporary master image. For
example, create a test image after the multi-seat stand-alone application has been
installed, but not run. After the test image is created, run the application. If the test is
successful, restore the image so the system is returned to a state before the application
was run.

3 After the Autodesk product has been installed, use imaging software to create a master
image of the system's hard drive, including the boot sector.

4 Apply the master image to your first satellite system so you can test the master image.

5 Launch the products on the test system and activate them.

Initially, each product has a 30-day grace period. During that grace period, you must
register and activate the products you want to continue using. Products on satellite
systems are automatically activated as long as they are connected to the Internet.
Satellite systems that are not connected to the Internet must be manually registered
and activated.

6 If the products on the test system operate correctly, distribute the master image to all
the other satellite systems so you can run and activate the programs throughout the
facility.

Use a Master Image to Distribute Network Licensed Products to Multiple Systems

A master image can be used to distribute network licensed products to multiple systems in
your classroom or lab environment.

1 Following the installation for your network licensed product, create a network
deployment for installing network applications.

2 Using the deployment shortcut that was created for the product, install the Autodesk
product on the system to be imaged.

3 After the Autodesk product has been installed, use imaging software to create a master
image of the system's hard drive.

4 Apply the master image to the other systems.

5 Run the product.

42 | Chapter 5 Distribute Products Using Ghosting

NOTE A license server must be running, and each system must be connected to the network
in order to run the application.

Restore a Master Image

Should you ever have to reinstall one or more of your products, it may prove expedient to
restore them using the master image.

NOTE Before attempting this, make sure you have saved a copy of each system’s Software
Licenses folder to another system.

1 Exit the application. Do not run the application again until you have completed this
procedure.

2 Open Windows Explorer and copy the Software Licenses folder from the appropriate
path shown below to a location other than the drive that will be restored.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Software Licenses

3 Restore the master image.

4 Restore the Software Licenses folder (and Product Licenses folder, if appropriate) that
you created in step 2 to its original location on that system.
Because the licensing folders were copied to a location other than the drive being
restored, they were protected during the restoration process. Once the licensing folders
are copied back to the system they came from, the products can be run and no
reactivation is necessary.

44
Activation
6
Activation is software-based license management technology that allows customers with
legitimate licenses to run Autodesk® software by verifying the validity of the serial number
and product key, and the eligibility of the computers where the software has been installed.
Product activation does not change the way the software works for licensed users.

Product Activation
You must register and activate your Autodesk software licenses within 30 days
of purchase. When registering, specify whether you are requesting activation
codes for network or stand-alone use (or both, the total not to exceed the total
designated in your contract). Please have available the serial number and product
key of your enclosed software when you register.

NOTE The trial period may vary for some Autodesk products.

The majority of products in your Autodesk Education Suites share the same
serial number and product key, and are not pre-registered. If you install products
from a deployment, the products will be activated at first launch.
For network licensed installations, you will be also be asked to input your server
name. Make sure the network license server is started. If everything is okay, the
products will launch successfully.
If you perform a stand-alone installation of several products from their media,
and you launch one of the products for the first time, you will be asked to
activate that product by entering your Autodesk Education Suites serial number
and product key. When the first product is successfully activated, all other
products in the suite are automatically activated.
If the products fail to activate, this could indicate that the Autodesk Education
Suites serial number and product key information was not entered correctly, or

45
the product needs to be installed with its own specific product key. If the
product fails to activate, follow the activation process again.
You can activate products online through the RegisterOnce pages of the
installer (https://registeronce.autodesk.com). The web page prompts you to create
a RegisterOnce account. If you have problems with this process, use the
following contacts to register and activate products manually.

Troubleshooting
8
This chapter contains a collection of solutions for common problems that you may encounter
when managing the software in a classroom or lab environment.

Licensing Issues
This section outlines common issues and their solutions regarding to licensing
your products and the tools related to licensing.

How can I get my Network License Manager to administer licenses for my

2011-based products as well as my 2012-based products?
You can do this by first updating your Network License Manager to the most
recent version. See Install the Autodesk Network License Manager in the Autodesk
License Guide.

Why is it a bad idea to use Microsoft Word to edit my .lic file?

When you save a .lic file after editing it with a word processor, like Microsoft
Word, extra data gets saved with the file. This results in an invalid .lic file. You
should always use an ASCII text editor like Notepad to ensure that no extraneous
data is saved with the file.

Licensing Errors
Some license errors require you to reactivate your product. If you need to
reactivate your product, the Product Activation wizard is displayed when you
try to run the product. To reactivate your product, follow the instructions in
the Product Activation wizard.
The following topics offer more details regarding specific errors.

51
Errors Caused by Hardware Changes
If you replace or reconfigure hardware on the computer where your Autodesk
product license resides, the stand-alone license might fail. You will not be able
to use your product.
To prevent damage to your product license, use the License Transfer utility to
export your license file. After you make the hardware change, you can import
the license file back. For instructions about using the License Transfer utility,
see Transfer Your Stand-Alone License in the Autodesk Licensing Guide, accessible
from the Installation Help link on each product installer.

NOTE If you get a license error when you change your hardware, you may have
to reactivate your license.

Errors Caused by Reinstalling an Operating System

If you reinstall your operating system on the computer where your Autodesk
license resides, the license might fail. You will not be able to use your product.
To resolve a license error in this case, you must reactivate your product. See
Register and Activate an Autodesk Product in the Stand-Alone License Guide.

To prevent a license error when you reinstall an operating system

NOTE If using Norton Ghost™ or another image utility, do not include the Master
Boot Record.

1 Locate the following folder and make a backup copy:

C:/Documents And Settings/All Users/Application Data/FLEXnet

2 Reinstall the operating system and reinstall the Autodesk product.

3 Paste the license folder to the same location from which you originally
copied the folder in step 1.
You can now run your Autodesk product.

Errors Caused by Changing the System Date and Time

Your product license allows for time changes to the system clock within two
days of the current time. If you set your system clock back more than two
days, the next time you start your product, you will receive a message that

52 | Chapter 8 Troubleshooting
gives you the option of correcting the system clock. If you do not correct the
system clock, you receive a license error.

To prevent a license error due to a change in system date and time

■ Make sure that your computer's system date and time are accurate when
you install and activate your Autodesk product.

Networking Issues
This section outlines common issues and their solutions regarding to
performing a network installation or configuring your network license server(s).

When installing tools and utilities, which selections are applicable for a
multi-seat stand-alone installation?
Since a multi-seat stand-alone licensed product does not rely upon a license
server to manage or activate the license, the only tool that is beneficial is the
Autodesk CAD Manager tool.
You need the CAD Manager tool if you want to make changes to CAD Manager
Channels.

When installing tools and utilities, which selections are applicable for a
stand-alone installation?
The Autodesk CAD Manager tool is the only tool that is beneficial to a
stand-alone licensed product. With the CAD Manager tool, you can modify
CAD Manager Channels.

Where do I find my server name?

When installing a network licensed product, you must specify the name of
the server that will run the Network License Manager. If you don’t know the
server name, you can quickly find it by opening a Windows command prompt
on the system that will be the Network License Manager. At the prompt, enter
ipconfig /all and note the Host Name entry.

If I choose to create a log file, what kind of information does the log file
contain?
There are two types of log files that can be generated that monitor information
about deployments and installations.

Networking Issues | 53
The Network log file keeps a record of all workstations that run the
deployment. The log lists the user name, workstation name, and the status of
the installation. Refer to this file for status information and details about
problems that users may have encountered during installation. The default
location for the network log file is in a Log subfolder where the administrative
image is located.
The Client log file contains detailed installation information for each
workstation. This information may be useful in diagnosing installation
problems. The client log is located in the \Temp directory of each client
workstation.

When specifying user workstation settings, I am given the option to specify

a profile. What are profiles?
Profiles can contain configuration settings for just about anything that is not
a drawing based system variable. For example, a profile can contain things
like support paths, grip settings, and plot settings. Profiles are created on the
Profiles tab of the Options dialog box.
When you specify a profile on the Specify User Preferences page during the
deployment process, it ensures that all workstations that use that deployment
to install the product will be configured the same way.

Can I create custom desktop shortcuts?

You can choose to create custom desktop shortcuts that use command line
switches to specify several options when you start the program. For example,
command line switches can be set to run a script during program launch,
create a drawing based on a template or prototype drawing, or designate a
workspace that should be restored on startup.

What happens when you choose to append or merge service packs?

When you append a service pack, the service pack is applied to the current
deployment only. Multiple service packs may be appended to a deployment.
The service pack file is included in the deployment and the service pack is
applied after the product is deployed.
When you merge a service pack, the service pack is merged into the
administrative image. Once merged, a service pack may not be removed from
the administrative image. Multiple service packs may be included in a single
administrative image.
You can choose to append or merge service packs from the Include Service
Packs page when creating a deployment.

54 | Chapter 8 Troubleshooting
What is an administrative image file?
An administrative image is a collection of shared file resources created during
the deployment process and is used by deployments to install the program to
networked workstations. Service packs (patches) can be applied to an
administrative image when you create the deployment.

What is the impact of selecting all products for the administrative image,
and can I add products later?
If you elect to include all products in your deployment, the administrative
image will be larger. You should select all products only when you create
multiple deployments from this image and prefer not to use the installation
disk. If there are products you rarely or never use, and you do not expect to
create additional deployments, you should only select a subset of products.
You can still create a deployment at a later date, and include additional
products, but you need to create a new administrative image. You need the
installation disk to do so.

Deployment Issues
This section outlines common issues and their solutions regarding to software
deployments.

What are the default search paths and file location settings?
Some Autodesk products use a deployment configuration setting on the Select
Installation Folders for Support Content panel of the deployment wizard. Here
you can choose where your support content gets installed by specifying a
folder other than the user profile folder. Support files include drivers, menus,
and optional, user-defined settings such as dictionary and customization files.
When an install path for support content is specified, it will be populated into
the corresponding search paths on the Define Search Paths and File Locations
page.

Support File Search Specifies the folders in which the program should look for text
Path fonts, customization files, plug-ins, drawings to insert, linetypes,
and hatch patterns that are not in the current folder.

Customization Files Specifies the names and locations of various types of files.
Main Customization File:

Deployment Issues | 55

Specifies the path for files with an .stb or .ctb extension, or plot
style table files (both named plot style tables and color-depend-
ent plot style tables).

Automatic Save File Specifies the path for the file created when you select Automat-
Location ic Save on the Open and Save tab.

Color Book Locations Specifies the path for color book files that can be used when
specifying colors in the Select Color dialog box. You can define
multiple folders for each path specified. This option is saved
with the user profile.

the program. If you plan to run the program from a write-
protected folder (for example, if you are working on a network
or opening files from a disk), specify an alternate location for
your temporary files. The folder you specify must not be write-
protected.

Temporary External Specifies the location of external reference (xref) files. This
Reference File Location location is used for the copy of the xref when you select En-
abled with Copy in the Demand Load Xrefs list on the Open
and Save tab.

Along with defining search paths and file location, can files be added?
Using the Add button, you can set paths to folders where files are stored. You
cannot add specific files.

Where can I check if service packs are available for my software?

To find out if a patch or Service Pack is available for your product, visit the
Autodesk support page at http://autodesk.com/servicesandsupport.

How do I extract an MSP file?

A Microsoft Patch (MSP) file is usually contained in a Service Pack executable
that you download from Autodesk Education Suites Support website. To extract
the MSP file from the executable, run the patch program from the Windows
command prompt using the /e switch.
Pay particular attention to the location where the files are extracted. For details
about using the patch file, review the Readme file for that patch.

Can Online Resource settings be modified later?

Yes. If you want to change the state of online resources after a product is
installed, you can do that from the CAD Manager Control utility. The CAD
Manager Control utility is installed separately from Autodesk Education Suites.
From the installation wizard, select Install Tools and Utilities and then select
the CAD Manager Control utility. After installation is complete, you can open
the utility from the Start menu. Do one of the following:

■ (Windows XP or Windows Vista) click All Programs ➤ Autodesk ➤ CAD

Manager Tools ➤ CAD Manager Control Utility.

Deployment Issues | 59
Where can I learn about InfoCenter?
With some Autodesk products, you can use InfoCenter to enter a question for
help, display the Communication Center panel for product updates and
announcements, or display the Favorites panel to access saved topics. For more
information, refer to the Installation Help for a product that uses InfoCenter,
such as Inventor, Navisworks, or 3ds Max.

What are information channels?

The Communication Center component of InfoCenter allows you to receive
announcements from various information channels. Through information
channels, you can receive the following:

■ Product Support information, including maintenance patch notifications.

■ Subscription Center announcements and subscription program news, as

well as links to e-Learning Lessons, if you are an Autodesk subscription
member.

■ Notifications of new articles and tips posted on Autodesk websites.

What are the benefits to enabling CAD Manager Channels?

CAD Manager Channels allow access to Internet-based content and information
feeds from a specified feed location.

What are RSS feeds and how do they benefit my installation?

An RSS feed is a live link you initiate by subscribing to someone’s website.
Once subscribed, the primary benefit is a constantly updating stream of content
that is delivered to your system in the form of summarized articles, forum
threads, blog posts, and so on. RSS stands for Rich Site Summary (or Really
Simple Syndication).

Where can I learn about InfoCenter search locations?

You can use InfoCenter to search multiple sources (for example, Help and
specified files) at one time, or choose to search a single file or location.

How do I set or customize search locations?

InfoCenter Search and Communication Center settings can be set in the
InfoCenter Settings dialog box or in the CAD Manager Control utility. You
must use the CAD Manager Control utility to specify CAD Manager Channel
settings.

60 | Chapter 8 Troubleshooting
Activation Issues
This section outlines common issues and their solutions regarding adding and
removing features, reinstalling or repairing your installation, and uninstalling
products.

Is it possible to change the installation folder when adding or removing

features?
Once your product is installed, you cannot change the installation path from
the Add/Remove Features page. Changing the path while adding features
results in program corruption, so it is not an option.

When should I reinstall the product instead of a repair?

You should reinstall your product if you accidentally delete or alter files that
are required by the program. Missing or altered files adversely affect the
performance of your product and cause error messages when you try to execute
a command or find a file.
If an attempt to repair an installation fails, reinstalling is the next best option.

Do I need my original disk to reinstall my software?

When performing a reinstall of the product, you need to have the original
disk(s) on hand. Installation data is cached locally on your drive and that data
is reused when reinstalling.

After repairing my installation, is it possible to recover my settings?

Custom settings can be exported and later re-imported to the same system in
case you have to repair the installation of your program.

When I uninstall my software, what files are left on my system?

If you uninstall the product, some files remain on your system such as files
you created or edited (drawings or custom menus).
Your license file also stays on your workstation when you uninstall your
product. If you reinstall on the same workstation, the license information
remains valid and you do not have to reactivate the product.

Activation Issues | 61
Refresh Issues
I sometimes have to re-image our facility. Do I need to be concerned about
breaking my software licenses?
When you create your master image, you need to make sure you have a clean
boot sector.
If you’re going to re-image frequently, you need to be sure to back up your
authorization data. You need to copy the license files to a different system
and then copy them back after you restore the master image. This ensures
that the application will run without re-activation. Refer to Restore a Master
Image on page 43.
