Blood Spatter Analysis Lab Packet

You will use this packet throughout the course of our Blood Spatter Analysis Lab Week
to answer the questions at each station. Questions and scenarios will be related to
vocabulary, concepts, and mathematics related to the topic of Blood Spatter
Analysis/Serology.

Station 1: Directionality

Station 2: Agglutination and Blood Type Matching

Station 3: Blood Spatter Patterns and Vocabulary Matching

Station 4: Livor Mortis Case

Station 1

L Ri

1.) After looking at the bloodstains in the figure, answer the following questions:
a.) Which three drops struck the surface closest to a 90-degree angle?
Explain your answer.

4 cause

b.) Which three drops struck the surface farthest from the 90-degree angle?

682

c.) In what direction were drops 2 and 7 traveling when they struck the
surface? Explain your answer. (Use the compass to explain your
orientation).
Well 2 was east and 7 was south
Station 2

1.)

blood type does Greg have?

2.) What blood type does Dale have?

Anti b

3.) What blood type does Mara have?

Anti a
Station 3

Please fill in the missing boxes with either the appropriate vocabulary term or the
definition for the vocabulary word. You will use the definitions from the slides located in
the module resources section.

Altered Stain A bloodstain with characteristics that

indicate a physical change has occurred
(think movement).

Wipe Pattern An altered bloodstain resulting from an

object moving through a preexisting wet
bloodstain.

Blood spurt A rapid intermittent release of blood from

a ruptured artery.

Swipe Pattern A bloodstain pattern resulting from the

transfer of blood from a blood-bearing
surface onto another surface, with
characteristics that indicate relative
motion between the two surfaces.

Bubble Ring An outline within a bloodstain resulting

from air within the blood.

Transfer Stains Results from contact between a blood-

bearing surface and another surface.

Drip Stain A bloodstain resulting from a falling

drop that formed due to gravity

Expiration Pattern A bloodstain pattern resulting from

blood forced by airflow out of the nose,
mouth, or a wound

Impact Pattern A bloodstain pattern resulting from an

object striking liquid blood.

Flow Pattern A pattern resulting from the movement of

a volume of blood on a surface due to
gravity or movement of the target.

Parent Stain - A bloodstain from which a satellite stain

originated

Satellite Stain
A smaller bloodstain that originated
during the formation of the parent stain as
a result of blood impacting a surface.
Station 4

In this section you will read through the following case of Jordan Miller and answer the
questions related to the case.

Jordan Miller was found in his apartment early one morning. HIs friends had been trying
to contact him the night before but received no response. When the police arrived at the
scene, Jordan was lying on the floor next to his bed. There were no visible signs of
struggle, no wounds, and nothing appeared to be out of place in the apartment. The
police called in a forensic team to investigate.

Evidence:

● Jordan’s body was cold to the touch, and his skin had a bluish tint.
● His arms and legs were showing purple discoloration in certain areas, most
notably on his left arm and left leg.
● The rest of his body appears pale.
● Cops estimate that Jordan died 4 hours before his body was discovered.

1.) How long does it take for livor mortis to appear on a body?

approximately 1 h after death,

2.) What force causes blood to pool in one area of the body?

Pressure

3.) Based on the scenario and the evidence, what position was Jordan’s body found
in?

On his left side

4.) What do you think happened to Jordan based on the evidence given?
Sucide or natural causes
