Micro Assignment 2

Recent developments in the field of technology has enabled many small and large scale business
to grow and reach new heights. One such company that has generated a billion dollar worth
revenue using technology is Starbucks.

Impact of technology on Starbucks


Starbucks is currently the leading coffee brand across the globe. They have generated a revenue
worth billions in recent years focusing on developing new methods of serving using technology.
The first Starbucks store was inaugurated in 1971, Seattle and now has more than 30,000 stores
world wide. To manage the data and maintain record of all these stores a investment in
technological labor and innovation is required. Starbucks made it’s first investment in the field
of technology in 2017 by Howard Schulz who was the CEO of the company till 2018. Later
Johnson took over the company who was an IT student and helped a lot in success of the brand.
These days Starbucks is referred to as more of Tech company rather than a beverage company.
Their man objective is to maintain a balance between human employment and Tech employment.
The current investments are made on a advanced cleaning system which can clean the stores in
fraction of seconds so that customers do not have to wait in ques and can enjoy their beverage
with loved ones. Feedback devices are being installed in every store so that Starbucks can have
an honest opinions from their customers and make the necessary adjustments to provide the best
experience to it’s customers.
Starbucks have it’s headquarters located in Tryer centre in Seattle. Tryer centre is the source of
all innovative ideas and investment strategies which are followed by Starbucks. Main areas of
tech investments are: Artificial intelligence, Cloud computing and machine learning. Recently
Starbucks made heavy investments on advance coffee making machine which can easily make
up to 6 different hot coffee flavours at a single time which saves a lot of time and less wastage of
beans take place. Quick enforcement of business strategies has been a key of success for
Starbucks.

Launching of App:
Starbucks launched it’s mobile and pc application in 2011 and it proved to be a great business
idea. Heavy sums are paid to the software engineers who are responsible for maintaining and
updating the app on regular bases. The best feature of their application is that it allows the
customers to pre order beverages and food on the application so that customers do not have to
wait in long ques and whenever they reach their nearest store their beverage is ready. You can
also order coffee and beans to your home to enjoy a home made coffee. Starbucks generates
about 25% of it’s annual revenue from it’s application.
Drive-thru experience proved to be another revolutionary idea especially in pandemic times.
Technological developments has brought a huge success to Starbucks but has reduced the human
employment rate which can be considered as a negative impact of technology on Starbucks.
