(a) ultrasonic (b) infrasonic (c) audible (d) noe of these
Ans : (b) infrasonic

2. State two characteristics of a moving body. 2

Sol: (i) A moving body requires a fixed reference point in its surrounding to describe motion.
(ii) A moving body changes its position continuously with passage of time with respect to its
surrounding.

3. State the two factors on which kinetic energy depends. 2

Sol: Kinetic energy depends on – (i) mass of the body and (ii) velocity of the body.

4. State Archimedes’ principle. 2

Sol: Archimedes’ principle states that when an object is fully or partially immersed in a liquid, it
experiences an upward force which is equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by it.
The buoyant force on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by the
object.

5. A boy weighing 40 kg climbs up a tree of height 5 m. Calculate the amount of work done.
(g=9.8 m/s2). 2
Sol: Here, mass (m) = 40 kg, height (h) = 5 m andacceleration due to gravity(g) = 9.8 m/s2
Work done = mgh  40  5  9.8  1960 J
6. Answer any three questions 3x3=9

i) What is the work done by a coolie walking on a horizontal platform with a load on his
head? Explain.
Sol: The coolie does no work. The force exerted by the load acts vertically downwards and
the displacement of the load is in horizontal direction. Thus displacement is not in the
direction of force which means that no work is done.

ii) Explain why does an apple fall down from a tree on shaking its branch?
Sol: When we shake a branch of an apple tree, a force acts on the branch and sets it in motion. This
force does not acts on the apple due to inertia of rest and so the apple remains at rest. As a
result, the branch moves away leaving the apple behind. This detaches the apple from the tree
and the apple fall downwards due to gravity.

iii) A man walks from one corner of the rectangular track which is 30 m long and 50 m broad
and reaches the opposite corner. Find the distance travelled and the magnitude of the
displacement.
Sol: Distance travelled by the man = AB + BC = (50 + 30) m = 80 m
Displacement  AC
 AB2  BC 2
 502  302
 2500  900
 3400
 58.3 m
Hence, the distance travelled is 80 m and the displacement is 58.3 m.

iv) An electric heater of 1000W is used every day for 70 minutes. Calculate the units of
electrical energy this heater will consume in 30 days of use.
70
Sol:: Given, power (P) = 1000 W and time (t) = 70 minutes  h  1.17 h
60
Energy consumed in one day  P  t  1000 1.17  1170 Wh
35100
Energy consumed in 30 days  1170  30  35100 Wh  kWh  35.1kWh
1000

v) What is the direction of acceleration due to gravity? Explain with an example.

Sol: The acceleration due to gravity acts in the direction of the line joining the object to the centre of
the earth.
For example, when an apple falls from a tree, it is attracted towards the centre of the earth by
earth’s gravity. During this fall, the apple moves in a straight line and accelerates due to acceleration
of gravity.

7. Explain balanced and unbalanced forces giving suitable examples. 4

Sol: Balanced forces are those forces which do not change the state of the rest or of motion of a
body. For example, in a tug of war, if the forces exerted by the two teams are balanced, the
rope will not move in either direction.
Unbalanced forces are those forces which change the state of the rest or of motion of a body.
For example, when a toy car lying on the ground is pushed, it starts moving. This means that the
forces acting on it are unbalanced.
