Future Tense Subject + shall + V1

will, shall (-acaq, -əcək) Positive:

Subject + will + V1 I shall go.


We shall go.
Positive: Question: Negative:will not=won’t
I will go. Will I go? I will not go. Question:
He will go. Will he go? He will not go. Shall I go?
She will go. Will she go? She won’t go. Shall we go?
It will work. Will it work? It won’t work.
We will go. Will we go? We won’t go. Negative: shall not = shan’t
They will go. Will they go? They won't go.
You will go. Will you go? You won’t go. Uses of shall:
1) Suggestions:
Contractions: will – ‘ll (I’ll) ; will not = won’t Shall we eat out today?

Uses of will: 2) Offer

1) Predictions (we think something will happen): Shall I carry your bag?

He will be a good teacher.


I believe they will win this match.
2) Instant decisions (taken while speaking):
A: We don’t have sugar.
B: I will buy some then.
3) Promises and Refusals:
I will help you but I won’t lend you any money.
4) Offers:
Give me your bag. I’ll carry it.
5) Requests:
Will you open the door please?

Time expressions: tomorrow, the day after


tomorrow, next day, next week, tonight, today, this
evening, in 10 minutes, …
Be going to (-acaq, -əcək) What are you going to do today?
Subject + am/is/are going to + V1
Contractions: to be going to = to be
I am going to be late.

He is going to be late.
She is going to be late. I am gonna help you.
You are gonna be late.
It is going to be late. He is gonna take the bus.
We are going to be late.
You are going to be late. Uses of be going to:

They are going to be late. 1) Predictions (we see- present


evidence)
Contractions: I’m, he’s, she’s, it’s, we’re, they’re
Slow down! We are going to have
an accident.
Negative: be + not + going to
Look at the clouds. It is going to
I am not going to be late. (I’m not going to be late.) rain.
He is not going to be late. (He isn’t going to be late.) 2) Decisions (taken before now
– intentions/ plans)
She is going to be late. (She’s not going to be late.)
We are going to watch the game
It is going to be late. (It isn’t going to be late.) tonight.
We are going to be late. (We aren’t going to be late.)
They are going to be late. (They’re not going to be
late.)

Certainty about the Future
100% sure Kate will be in class tomorrow.

Anna probably isn’t going to be in class


tomorrow.

Time Clauses
Before I go to class tomorrow, I’m going to eat
breakfast.
After I eat dinner, I’m going to study in my
room.
When I see her, I’ll give Rita your message.
As soon as the rain stops, I’m going to walk
downtown.
Until the rain stops, I’ll stay home.
While you are at school tomorrow, I’ll be at
work.
If it rains tomorrow, I’m going to stay at home.

After subordinating conjunctions, Future


Simple Tense cannot be used.
Present Progressive in Future
Present Progressive can be used to express
future time.
Present Progressive describes definite plans
for the future, plans that were made before
the moment of speaking.
Example:
Tim is coming to the party tomorrow.

Note: Present Progressive is not used for


predictions about the future.
-You are going to laugh when you hear this
joke.

Present Simple in Future

-for schedules
The train leaves at 5 tomorrow.
The semester starts next week.

Some verbs cannot be used in Present Simple


to express future time.
Example:
I am wearing my new skirt to the wedding
next week.
I wear my new skirt to the wedding next week.
Immediate future: Be about to + V1
The idiom ‘’be about to do something’’
expresses an activity that will happen in
the immediate future, usually within
minutes or seconds.

Example:

Shhhhh. The movie is about to begin.

Ann is holding a suitcase, and she is


wearing her coat. She is about to leave
for the airport.

PARALEL VERBS

Often a subject has 2 verbs and are


connected by and.

Example:
Jim makes his bed and cleans up his
room every morning.

Tim called and told me about his new


job.

Anna is cooking dinner and talking on


the phone.

I will stay home and will study tonight.
