DATE: OCTOBER 2020 TIME: 2 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question one and any other two questions.

QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

a) Briefly explain the following terms as used in design and analysis of sample surveys;
(6 Marks)
(i) Survey
(ii) Estimator
(iii) Systematic sampling
b) Given that ~ , , show that the sample mean, ̅ is a consistent estimator of .
(3 Marks)
c) Explain the two sources of errors in sampling theory. (4 Marks)
d) Consider a population of 6 units (N=6) taking values 1, 3, 10, 6, 20 and 4. Show that
̅ for n = 3. (4 Marks)
e) Giving relevant examples, distinguish between probability sampling and non-probability
sampling schemes. (4 Marks)

g) As the estimator of , consider y =  y , the means of means the ith clusters. Show
n i =1 i

that y is unbiased for Y . (5 Marks)

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)

a) Explain simple random sampling without replacement as used in design and analysis of
sample surveys. (3 Marks)
1 n
b) Show that in simple random sampling, the sample variance s 2 =  ( xi − x) 2
n −1 i =1

(8 Marks)
c) A university student body collected signatures to petition their council members such that
the signatures were collected on 675 sheets .Each sheet had enough space for 40
signatures, but on many sheets, a smaller number of signatures had been collected. The
numbers of signatures per sheet were counted on a random sample of 50sheets. The
results are as tabulated.
yi 41 41 36 32 29 27 23 19 16 15 14 11 10 7 6 5 4 3
21 4 1 1 1 2 1 1 2 2 1 1 1 1 3 2 1 1

Estimate the total number of signatures to the petition . (9 Marks)

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)

a) Explain any two advantages of stratified random sampling. (4 Marks)

b) Show that a stratified random sample mean, ̅ is unbiased for the population mean .
(7 Marks)
c) All the coffee per farm in Meru County are stratified by farm size and the mean number
of hectares of coffee per farm in each stratum, with the following results;
Farm size (hectares) No. of farms Mean coffee (hectares) Standard deviation
0-20 368 2.7 2.1
21-40 425 8.1 3.6
41-60 389 12.1 3.9
61-80 316 16.9 5.1
81-100 174 20.8 6.1
101 – 120 98 25.2 6.5
121+ 138 31.8 9.1

For a sample of 100 farms, compute the sizes in each stratum under stratified random sampling
with Neyman allocation. (9 Marks)

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)

a) Differentiate between ratio and proportion estimators. (4 Marks)

b) Show that the regression estimator, ̅ must be at least as efficient as the ratio estimator,
̅ under all circumstances. (7 Marks)
c) A daily newspaper conducts a survey of food costs by taking a simple random sample of
48 basic food stuffs purchased in a large supermarket. Prices (in dollars) for these items
are recorded in two separate occasions, three months apart, the earlier ones being denoted
and the later . The sample ratio ̅
gives an indication of change of these basic
food prices over three months period in the form of an estimate of the population ration R
of the mean prices of food stuffs on the two occasions. The following results were
obtained:
x = 11.41, y = 12.07,  xi2 = 8431.7,  xi y y = 8564.1,  yi2 = 9270.6 and n=48. Estimate the
95% confidence interval for R (9 Marks)

QUESTION FIVE (15 MARKS)

a) Explain the key steps in cluster sampling. (5 Marks)

b) Let ̅ be the estimate of from the systematic sample, show that E ̅ .
(6 Marks)

c) 2
Let S wsy =
