TOPIC
Use of waste plastic in Road Construction
AIM
The use of waste plastic in road construction
aims to reduce environmental impact and
dispose of waste plastic in a useful way.

Roads constructed with waste plastic can

perform better than those constructed with
conventional bitumen. Plastic-bitumen
composite roads are more resistant to wear
and can withstand higher temperatures.
INTRODUCTION

India faces a dual challenge: a rapidly growing

population generating massive amounts of
plastic waste and the urgent need for
sustainable infrastructure development. With
over 9 million tons of plastic waste produced
annually, the country is at a crossroads where
innovative solutions are essential. One
promising strategy gaining traction is the
incorporation of waste plastics into road
construction.
This approach not only addresses the pressing
issue of plastic pollution but also enhances
the quality and longevity of roadways. By
blending waste plastics with traditional
materials like asphalt, researchers and
engineers are developing roads that are more
resilient to wear and tear, weather
fluctuations, and heavy traffic. In fact, the use
of plastic in road construction can lead to
reduced maintenance costs and improved
performance, making it a win-win for both
the environment and the economy.
In India, several pioneering projects have
already demonstrated the viability of this
technique, showcasing its potential to
revolutionize the construction industry. As we
delve into the benefits, challenges, and future
prospects of utilizing waste plastics in road
construction, it becomes clear that this
innovative approach can play a pivotal role in
shaping a sustainable future for the nation’s
infrastructure.
MATERIALS REQUIRED

Plastic waste: Plastic waste such as PET

bottles, disposable cups, and plastic carry bags
collected from garbage dumps

Shredding machine: To cut the plastic waste

into pieces between 2.36 mm and 4.75 mm

Aggregate mix: Heated to 165°C and

transferred to a mixing chamber
● Coarse aggregates (e.g., gravel, crushed
stone).
● Fine aggregates (e.g., sand).

Bitumen: Heated to a maximum of 160°C

Mixing chamber: Where the shredded plastic

waste is added to the hot aggregate.
PROCEDURE

1. Collect and wash plastic waste, including

soft and hard foams, plastic carry bags, cups,
and laminated plastics.

2. Use a shredding machine to cut the plastic

waste into uniform pieces that pass through a
2.36 millimeter sieve but are retained on a 600
micron sieve.

3. The aggregate is to be heated between

140°C and 175°C.

4. Pour the shredded plastic onto the hot

aggregate to coat it. The plastic should melt
and form a thin layer around the aggregate
within 30 to 60 seconds.

5. Add hot bitumen to the plastic-coated

aggregate. The temperature of the bitumen
should be monitored to ensure good binding.
6. Mix the plastic-coated aggregate with the
hot bitumen. The resulting mix can be heated
to a maximum of 170°C.

7. Use the mixed material to lay the road at a

temperature between 110°C and 120°C.
OBSERVATION
➔Enhanced Durability: Roads constructed
with plastic-modified asphalt exhibited
improved resistance to cracking and
deformation under heavy traffic loads.

➔Reduced Moisture Sensitivity: The addition

of waste plastics can decrease the
absorption of moisture, leading to better
performance in wet conditions.

➔Enhanced Flexural Strength: The elasticity

introduced by the plastics contributed to
improved flexural strength, reducing the
likelihood of cracking under stress.

➔Potential Cost Savings: While initial setup

costs may be higher, the long-term savings
in maintenance and repair due to enhanced
durability can offset these expenses.
➔Colour and Texture Variations: Depending
on the types of plastics used, the final
product may exhibit different colors and
surface textures, which can affect visual
appeal.

➔Performance Consistency: Variability in

plastic sources and quality can lead to
inconsistencies in performance; therefore,
careful selection and standardization are
crucial.
CONCLUSION

The integration of waste plastics into road

construction represents a transformative
approach to both infrastructure development
and environmental sustainability. By
repurposing plastic waste, we can significantly
reduce landfill contributions while enhancing
the durability and performance of roadways. The
findings from various studies and pilot projects
indicate that plastic-modified asphalt offers
superior resistance to cracking, moisture, and
temperature fluctuations, leading to
longer-lasting and more resilient roads.

Moreover, this innovative method aligns with

global efforts to tackle plastic pollution,
providing a viable solution that not only
addresses waste management issues but also
contributes to a circular economy. The potential
for cost savings in maintenance and repairs
further reinforces the economic viability of this
approach.
