“Tell me about a time you made a mistake during a teamwork task and how you fixed it”

We were tasked with organizing the annual charity gala—a massive responsibility that would test every
ounce of our teamwork. I took charge as the project lead, determined to prove myself to my classmates
and the teacher. The goal was simple on paper: secure sponsors, plan logistics, and pull off a seamless
event for over 200 guests. However, nothing about the process felt simple, especially with Kim on the
team.

Kim was sharp, confident, and well-connected—a natural leader. Though we were supposed to be
equals, it often felt like we were rivals. While I focused on spreadsheets and deadlines, Kim charmed her
way into exclusive deals with sponsors. It wasn’t long before tensions began to simmer. She openly
questioned my decisions in meetings, often rallying a few members of the team to her side. I started to
feel the weight of the task shifting onto my shoulders, as if I were trying to outrun someone with a head
start.

Our team of six included Mark, the “creative genius” with endless ideas but no sense of feasibility; Priya,
the mediator who smoothed over our conflicts; and Tom who was eager but inexperienced. The one
bright spot was Sarah, my best friend and confidante, who always assured me that I was doing fine.
Together, we struggled to keep everything on track.

One afternoon, disaster struck. Kim accused me of mishandling the budget during a team meeting,
claiming I had overspent on a venue deposit. I was blindsided—my calculations had been precise, or so I
thought. The team began to doubt my competence, and I felt my grip on leadership slipping. That night, I
reviewed every detail of the budget until I found the error. It wasn’t mine—it was Kim’s. She had
forwarded me an outdated spreadsheet weeks ago.

The next day, I confronted her in private. To my shock, she admitted to the mistake but refused to take
responsibility, claiming it wasn’t worth dragging into the open. I decided not to escalate it; I had a gala to
save, and petty fights wouldn’t help. Instead, I quietly fixed the error and shifted my focus to regaining
the team’s trust.

The event night arrived, and everything was running smoothly—or so I thought. As I stood backstage,
overseeing last-minute details, Sarah came rushing toward me. “Hey, you need to see this,” she said, her
voice tight with urgency. She handed me a copy of the event program, and my stomach dropped. Kim’s
name was printed under “Project Lead,” with mine completely omitted.

Anger bubbled beneath my calm exterior, but I refused to let it show. Instead, I took the microphone
during the closing speech. As I thanked the team for their hard work, I subtly emphasized specific
contributions—mine included—making it clear to the audience who had truly orchestrated the event.
The applause that followed felt like quiet vindication.

Later, Kim avoided my gaze as the sponsors congratulated me personally. That night, I realized the plot
twist wasn’t Kim’s betrayal—it was my ability to rise above it. Leadership isn’t about credit; it’s about
resilience, and I had earned mine.
