A study has demonstrated that majority of the respondents with ESRD were male and above
40 years of age.1 Men and younger patients perceived that they had receieved greater
amount of informations than woman and older patients. 2 When patient were asked about
their general level of knowledge concerning their kidney disease , only 23% of patients
reported having a great deal of knowledge; 35% reported having limited knowledge. 3 Over
the last decade there has been a proliferation of entertainment-education: media based
approaches that deliver health care information.4 Patients affected by end stage renal
disease experience a multitude of disruptions to their daily lives. They experience high a
symptom burden, both physically and mentally. 5 The management of health issues requires
multiple variations in the patients life style. 6 The patients with End stage renal disease
are more prone to sleep disturbances than the general population7.The loss of
muscle mass is much more intensive in older patients of end stage renal disease
(ESRD)8. Patients with ESRD suffers with multifaceted problems arising from
the complications of disease and dialysis that require an effective self-
management9.
World wide the number of the patients with end stage renal disease and the number of
ESRD patients receieving renal replacement therapy is growing. Anemia is a common
problem in ESRD patients. In hemodialysis population treatment improves energy levels,
global functions, mood and stress. Dialysis therapy already consumed reasonable health
services.Dialysis is a procedure that can help patient with end renal disease to increase
quantity and quality of life. However ,there are several risks associated with dialysis which
can lead to the complications in elderly patients. End stage renal disease are globally
emerging as significant problem with increasing morbidity and mortality as well as economic
implication for health care.
End Stage Renal Disease is irreversible and progressive reduction of functioning renal tissue.
So it is important to restore the functioning of kidney through dialysis.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To asses the knowledge of ESRD patients about benefits of dialysis.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION:
Dialysis: It is a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when
the kidneys stop working properly.
METHODOLOGY:
STUDY DESIGN:
This will be a descriptive cross sectional hospital based study .
DURATION OF STUDY:
The study will continue from 17 April to 25 October.
SAMPLE SIZE:
About 50 patients will be included.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE:
Random sample technique.
SAMPLE SELECTION:
Inclusion criteria:
It includes all adult patients aged 40 years suffering from ESRD.
Exclusion criteria:
Patients with hepatitis infection and any other major surgical intervention in the previous 6
months will be excluded.
DATA ANALYSIS:
Data will be analysed through the SPSS latest version.
