4 Classification of EES system


4.1 General
A wi del y-used approach for classifyi n g EES system s is the d eterm in ati on accord in g to th e
form of en erg y u sed . A cl assification exam ple of EES system s accord in g to en erg y form is
shown in Fig ure 1 . EES system s are classified into m ech an ical, electrochem ical, chem ical ,
electrical an d th erm al en erg y storage system s.

4.2 Categorizing the application of EES system


The application and use of an EES system d iffers accord in g to its purpose and locati on . Th e
application of an EES system can be cl assified i n to three classes, and fi ve representati ve
appl ications are d escri bed in Table 1 . Th e sum m ary of the three cl asses of Tabl e 1 is as
foll ows:
a) Cl ass A: sh ort-d urati on appl icati on th at req u ires th e EES system to i n pu t/output the
req u ired power over a d uty cycl e for a short peri od of tim e (for exam ple, th e EES system
is ch arg ed and disch arged i n l ess th an 1 h).
b) Cl ass B: lon g-durati on application that req u ires th e EES system to i npu t/ou tpu t th e
req u ired power over a d u ty cycl e for a lon g period of tim e (for exam pl e, the EES system is
charg ed an d d ischarged i n m ore th an 1 h).
c) Cl ass C: the EES system is used to suppl y AC power to electric power gri d s in em erg ency
case, with ou t rel yi n g on an extern al power source.
On e EES system can be used i n com bin ation wi th appl ications of d ifferent cl asses .

4.3 Class A applications


4.3.1 Frequency regulation
The EES system supports grid freq u ency stabi l ization usin g acti ve power.

4.3.2 Fluctu ation reduction


The EES system stabil i zes a fluctuatin g power su ppl y or a fl uctu ati n g l oad .

4.3.3 Voltage regulation


The EES system stabi l i zes th e vol tage of a power grid usin g reacti ve an d acti ve power.

4.4 Class B – Peak shaving/peak shifting


The EES system has a function to use th e stored en erg y for peak d em and or a function to
store excess en erg y of g en erati on. EES system can ach i eve better operation effici ency of th e
transm issi on and d istribu ti on l ines.

4.5 Class C – Back-up power


The EES system has a function to su ppl y AC power in electric power grids or m icrogrids
install ed to operate criticall y im portan t system s over a fixed d uration in accord ance wi th the
system specifications. ESS system can therefore red uce th e risk of m aj or blackouts.

5 Unit parameters
5.1 General
5.1 .1 Overview
The fol lowi n g param eters shal l be specifi ed as th e com m on basic param eters to ensure EES
system capabi lity an d perform ance:

• nom i nal en erg y capacity (Wh);


• i nput an d output power rati ng (W, var, VA);
• rou n dtri p efficiency (%);
• expected service l ife (years, d u ty-cycles);
• system response (step response tim e (s) and ram p rate (W/s));
• auxil i ary power consum pti on (W);
• self-d isch arge of EESS (Wh/h);
• voltage ran ge (V);
• freq uency ran ge (H z).
Each param eter defin ed i n th is d ocum ent shal l be m easured an d eval u ated at th e POC.

5.2 List of unit parameters


5.2.1 Nominal energy capacity
The n om in al energ y capacity is the en erg y that can be output by th e system at POC un d er th e
stan dard testi ng con d itions specified i n 5. 1 . 2. The energ y capaci ty shall be eval u ated
consi d erin g energ y losses i nclu d in g con version l oss and en erg y used for th e auxil i ary
subsystem . The en erg y capacity sh all be defin ed as th e product of th e rated ou tput power and
th e ou tpu t d urati on tim e at th is rated power. Th e un i t of en erg y capacity shall be d efi n ed as
Wh for an EES system .

5.2.2 Input and output power rating


5.2.2.1 General
The in put and output power is the value of power th at an EES system can absorb or provid e
for a specifi ed tim e at the POC u n der the reference en vironm ental con d iti ons specified in
5. 1 . 3. Th e rated in pu t an d output power shal l be specifi ed together wi th input or output
durati on.

5.2.2.2 Active power


The rated i npu t acti ve power of th e EES system is th e m axim um valu e of power th at can be
input at constant for a specifi ed d urati on at the POC from the lower state of ch arge lim it. I nput
active power shal l be expressed with a n eg ati ve si gn as sh own i n Figure 4 accord ing to
I EC 62933-1 an d I EC TR 61 850-90-7.

The rated ou tpu t acti ve power of th e EES system is th e m axim um valu e of power th at can be
ou tpu t for a specified d uration at POC from th e fu l l avail able en erg y level . Output acti ve
power sh all be expressed wi th a positi ve si gn as shown in Fig ure 4 accord in g to I EC 62933-1
an d I EC TR 61 850-90-7.

The EES system can be applied for various types of applicati ons as l isted in Tabl e 1 . Differen t
types of in put and outpu t characteristics are req u i red for vari ous applicati ons. Th erefore, th e
input power ratin g, ou tput power rati n g an d in put and ou tput peri od d u ri ng wh ich the EES
system can absorb or deli ver constan t power sh ou l d be defin ed based on th e applicati on .

Specific input an d outpu t related perform ance param eters for specific applicati ons m ay be
ad d ed as req u ired . Sh ort-du ration in put an d ou tpu t power is an exam ple. Short-durati on in put
power is th e m axim um power that th e EES system can in put at th e POC d urin g a specified
durati on, wh ich is typi call y less th an 5 m in . Short-durati on ou tpu t power is the m axim um
power th at the EES system can output at th e POC for a specified d urati on, wh ich is typi cal l y
less th an 5 m i n. Th e specific cond i tions, such as duration for sh ort d urati on in put and output
power, sh all be specifi ed as agreed u pon by th e system supplier an d user for these specific
param eters.

5.2.2.3 Reactive power


The rated reacti ve power of the EES system is th e m axim um val ue of con stant reacti ve power
th at can be output or i nput con ti n uousl y at th e POC.

5.2.5 System response


5.2.5.1 Step response time
The step response tim e of th e EES system is th e d uration of th e tim e in terval between th e
instan t T0 wh en the set poi nt is recei ved at th e EES system , wh ich is in stand-by m ode, or
wh en th e gri d param eter chan ges in a way to tri gger th e system response , an d the i nstant T3
wh en th e acti ve power at th e POC reaches wi th i n 2 % of th e set poin t as shown in Figure 5. A
detai l ed d efi n iti on of T0 shall be agreed between the system supplier and u ser. Th e reference
set poi nt for th e d efi n iti on of th e step response ti m e is th e rated in put/outpu t power.

I f the system h as a rated valu e of reacti ve power, th en th e step response tim e sh al l be also
tested at:
– rated i nput/ou tpu t reactive power,
– rated input/ou tpu t apparent power (wi th different ratio of active/reacti ve powers) ,
– oth er set poi nts with red u ced power respect to th e rated on e.
N OTE I n gen eral , the respon se ti m e of reacti ve power i s covered by the respon se ti m e of acti ve power, because
th e respon se ti m e of reacti ve power i s faster th an th e response ti m e of acti ve power.

5.2.5.2 Ramp rate


The ram p rate of th e EES system is th e averag e rate of acti ve power vari ation per un i t of tim e
between T2 and T1 as shown in Fi gure 5. T1 is the tim e wh en th e acti ve power at th e POC
becom es h i gher th an 2 % of th e set poi nt value. T2 is th e tim e wh en th e acti ve power at th e
POC becom es h ig her than 98 % of th e set poin t val ue. The referen ce set poin t for th e

th e auxil i ary su bsystem shal l be exclud ed. The u n i t shal l be Wh/h.

5.2.8 Rated voltage range


The rated vol tage ran ge is th e range of voltage values at th e POC throu gh ou t where th e EES
system can rem ai n con n ected to th e grid .

5.2.9 Rated frequency range

6 Testing methods and procedures


6.1 General
I n Clause 6, th e test item s and procedu res are req u ired to eval uate the perform ance of EES
system to com pl y wi th requ irem en ts that relate to safety, rel i abil ity, perform ance, function and
system i nterconn ecti on.

I n th e u ni t param eter test, th e test item s an d proced ures are requ ired to m easure and to
eval u ate the basic ch aracteristic and perform ance of th e EES system . The un it param eter test
is a m and atory test for every EES system .

I n th e perform ance test, the test item s an d proced ures are req u ired to m easu re and to
evalu ate the perform ance of the EES system to provid e gri d service for each application
cl assification .

I n th e system im pl em en tati on test, th e g eneral comm issi on ing test item s an d procedures are
req u ired to confirm the system conform ity, excl ud i ng the u n it param eter test an d th e
perform ance test.

The ch aracteristics and the perform ance of the whole EES system shou ld be m easured an d
evalu ated at the POC.

I f testin g th e entire EES system is ph ysical l y not possible in larg e-scale and com plex EES
system s, th e testing shou ld be confirm ed by the test resu l ts carri ed ou t on each EES system
m odu le. I n this case, test confi guration , cond itions an d proced ures sh all fol l ow un i t param eter
test proced ures for each EES system m odu le.

I f it is n ot possibl e to carry ou t the actu al test with the EES system conn ected to th e gri d
because of restrictions related to gri d stabi l ity issues or power avai l abi lity, testi n g wi th a grid
sim ulator, at a test faci l ity, or back-to-back m ethod (see An n ex C) sh ou ld be used as a
substitute, based on agreem en t between th e system su pplier an d user. The use of a grid
sim ul ator shou l d be don e on l y if the sim u lator h as been val i dated i n term s of reprod uci bi li ty of
th e grid characteristics.

6.2 Parameter test


6.2.1 Actual energy capacity test
The actu al en erg y capacity of the EES system sh al l be tested at rated power u nd er th e
stan dard testin g cond iti ons specified in 5. 1 . 3, an d at sh ort d uration i npu t power if such
param eter is req u ired , at ad d iti on al power val u es d ifferent from rated power. The en erg y
capacity shall be evalu ated as th e product of th e rated outpu t power an d the ou tpu t d uration
tim e. Valu es of ou tput power from th e EES system sh al l be obtai n ed at POC by placi ng
calibrated power m eters at th e POC an d auxil i ary fed poin ts (i n case of au xi liari es fed from a
substati on accordi n g to Fi gu re 3). Th e test sh al l be perform ed as follows an d th e actu al
en erg y capacity shal l be calcu l ated using th e form u la bel ow, an d it wil l be com pared wi th the
nom inal en erg y capacity.

en erg y states as req u ired. A tolerance on al l th e m easurem ents of i npu t an d output power
shal l be with in ±2 % of th e rated power.

6.2.2.2 Active power test


a) I n put acti ve power test
I t sh all be confirm ed th at th e EES system can absorb (or be ch arged at) constant power
for a specifi ed durati on at th e POC i n accord ance wi th th e fol lowi n g proced ures. The rated
i nput active power of th e EES system shal l be applied as the constant power val ue i n th is
test.

• The reactive power set poin t shall be set to positive rated reacti ve power an d m ain tai n ed
for 1 m in . Th e reactive power at th e POC sh al l be m easured.
• The reacti ve power set poin t sh all be set to negati ve rated reactive power an d m aintai ned
for 1 m in . Th e reacti ve power at th e POC sh al l be m easured.
6.2.2.4 Apparent power test
I f th e system has a rated valu e of reacti ve power, then th e apparent power test shal l be
con d ucted as fol l ows.

Apparen t power can be confirm ed usi n g th e test resu l ts of acti ve an d reactive power tests at
th e POC. Th e test cases at th e rated active power an d th e rated reacti ve power can be
treated as typi cal test cases for th e apparent power test. For exam ple, typical testi n g poi nts
are 1 , 2, 3 and 4 i n Fig ure 6.

6.2.4 Expected service life test

perform ance data to estim ate th e service life of th e EES system .

The degrad ation ch aracteristic d epends on com pl ex con d iti ons regard in g operati on such as
appl ications, operation tem perature/pressure, etc. of th e EES system . Therefore, th e
expected service l ife test of EES system is not d efi ned an d n ot stan dard ized , but th e en d of
service l ife valu es descri bed in 5. 2. 4 for m akin g d ecision expected service l ife of EES system
shou l d be specifi ed in th e specification .

The system suppli er sh ou l d provi d e th e in i ti al perform ance d ata and d egradati on d ata to
en able estim ation of service l ife of th e EES system as d escribed in 5. 2. 4 and in th is cl ause.

6.2.5 System response test, step response time and ramp rate
The response tim e of th e EES system sh all be m easured in accord ance wi th 5. 2. 5 an d th e
proced ure listed below. The EES system sh all absorb or provi de the acti ve power accord i ng
to th e set poi n t wh ich in d icates rated input / ou tput power. Th e set poi nt and the inpu t/ou tpu t
power at th e POC shall be recorded wi th a d ata acqu isition system at reg u l ar intervals of tim e,
wi th proper tim e resol ution.

6.2.6 Auxiliary power consumption test


The auxi l iary power consum pti on test sh al l be m easured and estim ated i n the state con nected
to the POC i n the stan d ard testin g con d iti ons specified i n 5. 1 . 2 for th e fol l owing operation
con d itions:
a) stan d-by state(keep the power con versi on su bsystem acti ve power at 0 W and reactive
power at 0 var),
b) rated ou tpu t active power,
c) rated i nput active power,
d) rated i nj ected reacti ve power (if th e system h as a rated valu e of reactive power),
e) rated absorbed reactive power (if th e system has a rated valu e of reacti ve power).
I n case th e auxil i ary su bsystem is fed from th e POC (Fi gure 2), auxil i ary power consum ption
shal l be m easured at th e point of suppl y of the auxi liary su bsystem .

I n case th e auxiliary su bsystem is fed from th e auxil iary POC (Fig ure 3), th e auxi l iary power
consum ption sh al l be m easured as i n pu t power at th e auxil i ary POC.

Before m easurem en t, th e EES system shal l be charg ed or d isch arg ed to a 50 % state of


avai l abl e en erg y capacity or specified en erg y capacity val u e agreed between the system
suppl ier an d user.

The m easures of power consum ption for cases a) to e) sh all be record ed as an in d epend ent
param eter.

A tolerance of i n pu t and ou tpu t power sh all be wi th in ± 2 % of th e rated power.

6.2.7 Self-discharge of EES system test


Self-d isch arge of EES system sh all be tested i n accord ance with th e fol l owi ng procedures.
a) The EES system shal l be charged/d ischarged to 1 00 % of rated energ y capacity or
specified energ y capacity val ue as agreed between th e system suppl ier an d user.
b) The power con version subsystem in th e EES system shall be sh u t d own an d kept at a
stopped state for the m easurem ent tim e of self-d isch arg in g for the EES system . The
m easurem ent tim e of sel f-dischargi ng for th e EES system shou l d be chosen from on e of
on e hour, on e d ay or one week an d th is tim e valu e sh al l be specified in reporti ng th e
resu l ts.
c) After th e m easurem ent ti m e of self-d ischarg ing for the EES system , th e EES system sh al l
be ch arg ed to th e in iti al en erg y capaci ty level, an d i nput en erg y shal l be m easured at th e

ind icate th e applicabl e d uty cycl e for th e roun d trip effici ency test and the test sh all be su bj ect
to agreem ent between th e user an d system suppl ier.

Du ty cycl e rou nd trip efficiency of the EES system shall be tested i n accord ance wi th fol lowi n g
proced ures.
a) The EES system shall be set to th e i n iti al d esired avai l abl e energ y i n accordance wi th th e
appl icable du ty cycl e.

6.3.2.3 Fluctuation reduction test


For class A applicati ons, th e EES system sh ou ld h ave a function aim i ng at red uci ng th e power
fluctu ation th at is caused by renewable energ y gen erations such as ph otovol taic an d wi n d
turbin e. Th e EES system can reduce the interference of th e fluctuation to th e grid with its
chargi ng an d d isch arg in g operation s. Th e perform ance of fluctuation red uction sh all be tested
with a fl uctuatin g gen erati on system or sim ul ated si gn als of th e power g enerated by th e
fluctu atin g system . Th e fl uctu ati ng power profil e shal l be agreed between system su ppl i er an d
user.

6.3.3 Performance test for class B applications

EES system .

6.3.4.2 Black start output voltage


The EES system shal l h ave a black start output voltage test perform ed in accord ance with th e
proced ure listed bel ow.
a) The power con versi on subsystem shall be conn ected electrical l y to th e POC, wh ich is
externall y con nected to the specified test load. The POC sh al l not be en erg ized by an y
oth er power suppl y. N o external auxi l iary power source is al l owed to feed the system in
th is test.
b) The sign al, wh ich i nd icates th e start of the bl ack start, sh al l be inpu t to the EES system .
c) The en tire voltage en vel ope of th e POC duri n g transition to th e stead y state sh al l be
record ed to d eterm in e th e tol erance ban d of th e stead y state voltage. The system provi der

6.4 System implementation test
6.4.1 Visual inspection
The i nspections are req u i red wi th reference to th e wh ole EES system i n vol ving the faci liti es of
th e EES system , the electrical equ ipm en t, an d th e el ectrical power conn ecti ons in su bstations
an d electrical room s.

I nspections sh ou ld be carri ed ou t before en ergi zi n g th e EES system .

The foll owi ng item s shou l d be incl u ded i n the i nspections:

• install ation of cover for li ve, h ot and cold parts, an d th e ad equ ate d istance from th e person ;
• i nstall ation of fence, wall , locki ng system of doors an d access pan els, an d n otice
i nd icating restricted access area;
• i nstall ation of ven tilati on system (when the system is present);
• install ation of firefig hti ng system (when the system is present);
• m easures for earth q uake (preven tion of d am age, wh en th e m easures are presen t);
• m easures for l ig htn ing (when the m easures are presen t).

6.4.2 Continuity and validity of conductors


The con tin u ity of con d uctors sh al l be verified throu gh visu al inspecti on, con tin u ity test, an d
insu lati on resistance test i n accord ance to I EC 60364 or I EC 61 936. Th e test shou ld i nclu de
power, control an d m on i torin g l in es an d protecti ve con ductors.

For el ectrical con n ecti on s, th e com pl i ance of l abels (cables, term inal bl ocks, an d con nectors)
with drawi n gs an d d esig n d ocum ents sh ou ld also be checked.

On three-phase system s, th e ph ase sequ ence of both areas of the EES system and gri d
shou ld be confirm ed.

6.4.3 Earthing test


The earth in g arran gem ent of EES system sh ou ld be verified. Th e foll owi n g el em ents sh ou ld
be checked:

• earthi n g arrangem en t of the EES system install ed accord i ng to d esi gn an d applicable


stan dards;
• bon d in g conn ections and conn ecti on to term in als of the m ain existi ng earth in g busbar, if
appl icable;
• proper conn ecti on of th e earthi n g busbar to th e l ocal earthin g busbar;
• i nd i vidu al earth in g con necti on of m ain equ i pm ent to th e earth i ng busbar;
• con n ection of earth in g cabl es to structures via proper con nectors to preven t corrosion
from dissim il ar m etals.
For low-voltage EES system s, the earth i n g test sh all be perform ed accord i ng to I EC 60364-6.

For EES system s exceed in g 1 kV AC or 1 , 5 kV DC, th e earth in g test shal l be perform ed


accord ing to I EC 61 936-1 .

6.4.4 Insulation test


For l ow-voltag e EES system s, th e insu l ation resi stance test an d withstan d voltage test sh all
be perform ed accord i n g to I EC 60364-6.

For EES system s exceed i n g 1 kV AC or 1 , 5 kV DC, th e withstan d voltage test sh al l be


perform ed accord in g to I EC 61 936-1 .

6.4.5 Protective and switching device test


The characteristics and/or the effectiveness of protecti ve an d swi tch ing (e. g. , circu it breaker or
con tactor) d evices sh all be verified.

• Protecti ve and swi tchi n g d evices instal led accord i n g to desi gn shou l d be ch ecked by
visual i nspection .
• The m ai n swi tch i n g devi ces sh ou l d correctl y operate with a con tact positi on in d icator by
an operation in vol vin g m an u al closi n g and openi n g.
• Rel ay settin g sh oul d be checked by visu al inspecti on an d/or test.
• Related protecti ve d evices, switch in g d evices, faul t in d icators, an d al arm notificati on
system s shou ld operate correctl y by provid i n g a sim ulated analogu e in pu t to relays or
sensors, or forcin g operation of rel ays or sensors for EES system s, m odu les, related
devices and each protection system .

duri n g both ou tpu t an d i nput operati ons at rated or specified power agreed between th e
system su ppl i er an d user. Add i tion all y, operation an d in d ication of the circu it breaker and th e
EES system , as well as th e voltag e risin g val ue at th e EES system output sh ou ld be
confirm ed.

I f it is n ot possibl e to test the whol e EES system on si te, it is acceptabl e to test th e EES
system m odu l e by d iscon nectin g the EES system m odu le.

6.4.6.3 Operating cycle test (input and output power operating test)
I t sh oul d be confirm ed that abn orm alities of rise i n tem perature, n oise l evel an d vibration d o
not occur i n th e EES system duri n g rated inpu t an d outpu t power operation .

6.4.6.4 M easurement, control and monitoring system test and communication test

6.4.7 Grid connection compatibility test


6.4.7.1 M easurement of harmonic cu rrents
This test sh ou ld be con ducted at th e factory or on site if requ ired by grid cod e or l ocal
reg u l ati on .

A tim e seri es of three-phase instan tan eous curren t m easurem en ts shou l d be coll ected for
each operati on con d iti on, wh ich are at the rated i n pu t active power, 0 % an d th e rated ou tpu t
acti ve power of the EES system . The req u irem ents rel ated to the m easurem ent are accord in g
to I EC 61 000-4-7. The in d i vi d ual h arm on ic current com pon en ts for frequ en ci es up to 40 tim es
th e fu n dam ental grid freq uency and th e total h arm on ic current d istortion sh ou l d be calcu lated
in each operation con diti on of the EES system an d sh ou l d be reported .

The voltage harm on ics d urin g the test shou ld be m easured at th e POC an d th e total harm onic
d istorti on of the voltag e shou ld be reported.

6.4.7.2 Verification test to temporary voltage drop


I f th e system has a su pport fu nction for tem porary voltag e drop, th en th is test sh all be
con d ucted as fol l ows.

The purpose of th is test is to verify that th e EES system is able to correctl y d eal with th e
transien t voltag e drop and to overcom e it wh i le m ai ntai ni n g con nection to th e gri d wi th out
dam age, an d restart th e deli very of active and reactive power, with in a d efin ed tim e l im it from
th e restoration of the voltage accord in g to tem porary vol tag e drop ch aracteristics (V an d t
characteristic curve).

On e of th e fol l owing testi ng or evalu ation m eth ods sh al l be appl ied:


a) testin g accord i n g to I EC 61 400-21 ;
b) testin g wi th grid sim ul ator;
c) testin g and eval uation by EES system m odu le;
d) eval u ation by type test d ata of each com pon en t or EES system m odu l e.
Gri d codes or local regu lati ons on low vol tag e ri d e through ch aracteristic shou ld be used as
tem porary vol tage drop characteristics.

6.4.8 Available energy test


The EES system shoul d h ave m eans or d evices to m easure avai labl e en erg y. Avail able
en erg y is d efi ned as energ y th at can be ou tpu t at th e POC by operatin g at the rated output
power from the current state. Fu l l avail able en erg y i s eq ual to nom inal en erg y capacity, an d
th e state of th e l ower l im i t at wh ich th e EES system can be d isch arged to ou tpu t th e avai labl e
en erg y is d efin ed as the m inim um available energ y l evel . The u n it of avail abl e en erg y shou ld
be Wh.

Avail able en erg y sh all be tested i n accord ance wi th th e fol l owing proced ure un d er th e
stan dard testi ng con d iti ons specified i n 5. 1 . 3.
a) The EES system shal l be ch arged to th e ful l avai lable en erg y l evel .
b) The EES system shall be d isch arged at th e rated power. I t sh ou ld be confirm ed th at the
con tin u ous d isch arg in g is available at th e m in i m um avail able en erg y l evel . Disch arg ed

Fluctuation reduction test


B.1 General
When a renewabl e energ y power plant is con n ected to a grid, especial l y ph otovol taic and
wi n d turbin e, th e EES system is n eed ed to reduce th e in terference of th e ou tput power
fluctu ati on of th e pl an t. The EES system can red u ce th e power fluctu ati on of th e plant wi th its
power i nput an d output operations. The fluctu ati on reduction test evalu ates the effectiveness
of d ispatch comm ands to th e EES system , wh ere th e d ispatch com m and s req uest th e EES
system to input or outpu t power to m in im i ze th e fl u ctu ati ons of total output power.

B.2 Fluctuation reduction test


The fl uctu ati on reduction test is d one in accord ance wi th th e foll owin g procedure:
a) The EES system is conn ected to th e power g rid and is set to be in the fl uctu ati on
red uction m od e (or set to provid e the fl uctu ati on stabi l izin g function).
b) The ren ewable en erg y g en erator d elivers a fl uctu ati ng power ou tput to th e power gri d. Th e
acti ve power set poin t of th e ren ewabl e en erg y system output PR an d th e acti ve power set
poi nt of the total ou tput power P G shall be recorded d uri ng a specified reg u l ar interval of
tim e.
The user sets a proper i nterval Δ t. As sh own in Figure B. 1 , the power d evi ation Δ P is
calcu lated wi th th e recorded total outpu t power P G as fol lows:

C.1 Back-to-back test without grid interconnection


I f th e g enerati on of arbi trary vol tage an d freq uency is n ot possi ble, th e back-to-back test
without grid i ntercon n ection can be perform ed by agreem ent between the system su ppli er an d
user. Th e test facil i ty an d th e test subj ect of the EES system (EESS) m od u l e are conn ected to
th e AC bus, an d i nd epen den t from the g rid (or extern al power source). The test facil i ty sh ou ld
have th e capabi lity to be a voltage and frequ ency source that can ch arge an d d isch arge for
exam ple, the EESS m odu l e as i l lustrated i n Figure C. 1 and th e AC/DC/AC con verter as
il lustrated i n Figu re C. 2. The capacity of the test facil ity shou ld be selected so th at it can
m aintai n th e voltage an d freq u ency to th e test cond i tions, wh ile th e test subj ect of th e EESS
m odu le is ch arg i n g or d i scharg ing (or absorbing or sourcing reactive power). Th e POC is set
to th e AC bus between th e test faci li ty and th e test su bject of th e EESS m odu l e. The test
faci lity sh ou ld be started i n the vol tag e and frequ ency source m od e, and th e voltage an d
freq uency sh oul d be m ai ntain ed or controll ed accord i n g to th e test con di tions. I f th e gri d (or
th e extern al power source) is presen t, th e test facil ity can be su ppli ed from the gri d (or the
external power source) wi th the en erg y wh ich corresponds to the test faci l ity power loss
