Introduction to SJT
A Situational Judgement Test is a popular pre-employment test that is commonly used by employers
to assess candidates’ key competencies and personality traits. The test displays realistic situations
and conflicts which are likely to arise in the daily work routine and provides optional responses for
resolution which the candidate is asked to rate on an effectiveness scale.

Test structure and Format

The SJT questions in Deutsch Bank – Job Simulation consists of 18 Ranking questions.
You will receive a source of information that will describe a situation occurring in the workplace. You
will have 3 possible answers for how to react to the situation. Two answers need to be ranked - one
as the most effective and one as the least effective. One answer will remain unmarked.

Test Scoring
The assessor will provide the employer with the scores of the candidates. There is usually an overall
grade on a regulated scale. In this assessment, the results are sent to the candidates by mail. It is
divided into three grades- high, medium, and low. The score is given to each of the six development
tips/ principles. For each response you choose you are graded for the principles that are reflected in
this response.

The situation/ scenario

The situation is a passage, varying in length (between 60 and 120 words), that presents the
candidate with a dilemma that could occur while working in the applied position. The writer of the
test aims to describe the situation as close to a real-life situation as possible, so that the candidate
can imagine himself in the scene, facing the dilemma.

The scenario provides information about the company and a description of the candidate’s role and
responsibilities. It is critical to understand the definition of your role as this is a key starting point for
solving a dilemma. People who take part in the scenario can be supervisors of different ranks and
responsibilities, fellow managers, subordinates, managers, or co-workers. It is imperative to note
precisely who those people are and what their relation is to you. Conflicts at work are the root cause
of many dilemmas.

Development tips- Principles
Deutsch Bank use their six development tips as guiding principles. During this assessment, they
observe them. Read the principles and try to think of them when answering your questions.
After completing the PrepPack test, read the explanations. They will assist you in understanding the
principles behind each question and how to apply them on your actual test.

Deciding and Initiating Action

When you are faced with a difficult decision, evaluate its consequences in advanced by considering
the potential impact upon: your team, your manager, other people in the department, organization
or outside the organization, and the major work goals that you have to achieve. Now consider the
consequences of not making the decision upon the same areas. Balance the two sets of potential
consequences against each other.

Analysing and Risk Management

Imagine that there is no one available to offer advice - what options would you consider? Prepare a
list of alternatives and summarise the pros and cons of each. Be prepared to make a
recommendation if asked and be able to justify it. Try researching different analysis methods; SWOT,
Forcefield, Cost Benefit, Critical Path etc.

Relating & Networking

If you are not at ease when meeting strangers, make a specific point of placing yourself in that
situation. If you are particularly apprehensive, make a point of starting with some low risk
encounters, e.g. a social situation. As you slowly gain confidence increase the risk factor.

Resilience and Sustainable Performance

Show belief in your ability to maintain control and achieve results despite pressures of the activity.
Maintain direction by ignoring distractions. Treat threats as challenges to be overcome. Take time
out to get your thoughts in order and refocus on what needs to be achieved. Ask others for help in
overcoming issues.

Adhering to Principles and Values

Voice your support for initiatives that promote your organisation’s principles and values. Work out
specific ways to ensure they succeed and build these into your personal objectives. Ask others to
give you feedback about their perceptions of your honesty, integrity and ethical standards and how
you could improve their perceptions of you.

Achieving Goals & Objectives

Identify someone who has recently achieved a difficult goal or objective. Get them to describe how
they did so and how they maintained their focus and morale in the face of difficulties.

General tips
Here are a few final tips we advise you to follow on your SJT:

Before sitting the test, you should find out as much as you can about the nature
of the job. This would enable you to speculate about the kind of abilities and
qualitiesthe employer is looking for.

First, you need to understand the dilemma you’re facing, whether it’s a professional one,
a personal one, or both. Try to connect the dilemma to one of the principles. Then, try to
find a response that most effectively resolves the dilemma.

Active responses are usually better than passive ones.

Don’t answer instinctively. Your initial intuition is important, but you must try to tell
yourself exactly what you think the differences between the responses and why you think
one response is better than another.

Motivation, commitment to high standards, delivery on time and taking responsibility are
among the most important principles, and normally a good response would include at
least one of them.

For most jobs, you would be required to show some social skills and teamworkcapabilities
in addition to doing well at individual work.

Good luck!
