INSTRUCTIONS:
 There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory
 This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and
Section E. All the sections are compulsory.
 Section A contains sixteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions of
two marks each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each, section D
contains three long questions of five marks each and Section E contains two case study
based questions of 4 marks each.
 There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section B,
C, D and E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
 Use of calculators is not allowed.
 Question paper contains 9 pages.

acquire a greater angular speed after a given time?

Q .26 A mass of 200 kg rests on a rough inclined plane of angle 30 0. If the
coefficient of limiting friction is 1/√3, find the greatest and the least forces
in newton, acting parallel to the plane to keep the mass ¡n equilibrium.

A bullet of mass 0.01 kg is fired horizontally into a 4 kg wooden block at


rest on a horizontal surface. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the
block and the surface is 0.25. The bullet remains embedded in the block
and the combination moves 20 m before coming to rest. With what speed
did the bullet strike the block?

Q .27 (i) Define Center of mas for a system of particles.


(II) In the HCl molecule, the separation between the nuclei of the two
atoms is about 1.27 A (1 A = 10-10m). Find the approximate location of the
Center of mass of the molecule, given that a chlorine atom is about 35.5
times as massive as a hydrogen atom and nearly all the mass of an atom
is concentrated in its nucleus..•. mass of chlorine atom, m2 = 35.5 units

Derive the expression for the radius of gyration

Q .28 Two exactly similar wires of steel and copper are stretched by equal [3]
forces. If the total elongation is 1 cm, find by how much each wire is
elongated. Given Y for steel = 20 × 1011 dyne cm-2,
Y for copper = 12 × 1011 dyne cm-2.

Q .29 An oxygen cylinder of volume 30 liter has an initial gauge pressure of 15 [3]
atmosphere and a temperature of 27 °C. After some oxygen is withdrawn
from the cylinder, the gauge pressure drops to 11 atmosphere and its
temperature drops to 17 °C. Estimate the mass of oxygen taken out of the
cylinder. (R = 8.31 J mol-1 K-1, molecular mass of O2 = 32 u.)

(I) A stone tied to the end of a string 80 cm long is whirled in a horizontal


circle with a constant speed. If the stone makes 14 revolutions in 25 s, [2]
what is the magnitude and direction of acceleration of the stone?

(ii) A boy stands at 78.4 m from a building and throws a ball which just enters [3]
a window 39.2 m above the ground. Calculate the velocity of the
projection of the ball.

(ii) Define escape velocity .Write escape velocity of any object from the earth [2]
surface.

(i) Derive an expression for the gravitational potential energy above the [3]

(ii) Explain Newton’s law of gravitation. [2]

Q .33 (i) Derive the expression for excess pressure inside: a liquid drop. [3]

(ii) What will be nature of shape of meniscus for sticky and non-sticky [2]
substance .

Prove mathematically Bernoulli’s Theorem. [5]

SECTION E

Q .34 A monkey climbs up a slippery pole for 3 and subsequently slips for 3 [4]
seconds. Its velocity at time t is given by v(t) = 2t(3 – t); 0 < t < 3 and v(t)
= -(t – 3)(6 – t) for 3 < t < 6s in m/s. It repeats this cycle till it reaches the
height of 20 m.

(i) At what time is its velocity and average velocity maximum? 1

(ii) At what time is its acceleration maximum in magnitude? 1

(iii) How many cycles (counting fractions) are required to reach the top?

(iii) A ball is dropped from a height of 90 m on a floor. At each collision with


the floor, the ball loses one tenth of its speed. Plot the speed-time graph
of its motion between t =0 to 12 s

Q .35 A spring having with a spring constant 1200 Nm-1 is mounted on a [4]
horizontal table as shown in Fig. A mass of 3 kg is attached to the free
end of the spring. The mass is then pulled sideways to a distance of 2.0
cm and released. Determine

(i) the frequency of oscillations, 1

(ii) maximum acceleration of the mass, 1


(iii) the maximum speed of the mass

(iii) The acceleration due to gravity on the surface of moon is 1.7 ms -2. What
is the time period of a simple pendulum on the surface of moon if its time-
period on the surface of Earth is 3.5 s? (g on the surface of Earth is 9.8
ms-2 .)
