b) Reinforcement

Reference : ACI 318-99 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete

(2)
Transfer of tension force from the bolt to the vertical reinforcement

(2)
For this standard design, it is not anticipated that any anchor bolt will achieve the Tensile Capacity
given in TABLE 1. With the exception of tall process columns, the majority of anchor bolts will
be located on baseplates to steel columns for piperacks, compressor house structure etc. Uplift
may be experienced on these bases from wind and/or dynamic forces, and it is not expected that
these forces will be of such a magnitude to lead to high tensile forces in the 4no. (say) bolts
that can reasonably be expected to anchor each column in the above structures.

1
Example : The baseplate for a steel column will usually have 4no. Anchor bolts, say 1 /4" dia.
From TABLE 1 the total allowable pullout force will be 15.7 x 4no. = 62.8 kip (28Te) which is far higher
than the anticipated loads for this project and will result in unacceptably long embedment lengths.
A value 30% of the Tensile Capacities in TABLE 1 will be used for calculating the anchor bolt
embedment lengths.

Vertical pier reinforcement intercepts potential crack planes adjacent to the bolt head. Reinforcement
should be developed on either side of the potential crack plane. ( see over )

In order to limit the embedment length of a bolt, a larger number of smaller-size bars is preferred
over fewer, larger-size bars. ( NOTE. In foundations with exceptionally high uplift forces, two concentric
rows of vertical reinforcement may be provided, if required, to transfer the anchor bolt tensile load.)

The arrangement of reinforcement should take into consideration the minimum distances
required for placing and vibrating of concrete, minimum bar spacing required by ACI 318, and the
need for adequte room below the bolt head or nut to ensure there is sufficiently compacted concrete.

Note. The area of vertical pier reinforcement calculated (Ast) is not to be considered as additive to
the reinforcement required strictly for resisting the moments, shears and vertical loads applied to the
pier. The area of reinforcement required to resist the above mentioned applied forces should equal or
exceed the area of steel required to resist the anchor bolt tension.

AST = TU where: TU = factored (ACI 318 Ch.9) tensile load per bolt
0.9FY (say 1.4 x 30% tensile capacity given in TABLE 1)(2)
FY = minimum specified yield stress of reinforcement
FY = 60 ksi for this Project

The development length for each reinforcing bar to each bolt size will then be determined.
