Study Tips:

- Identify examples of sociological concepts in everyday life ( I.e.


scrolling social media, watching TV. Walking around campus,
etc.) and reflect on how they embody sociological concepts

- Review readings, textbook and Canvas Articles

- Be familiar with articles’ main arguments

- Review Previous Tutorial slides /activities involving the


readings

- Review and be able to explain sociological concepts /theories.


Written Test taking tips:

Test will be short and long answer responses

- Keep things simple and clear: No need for fancy or complicated


language; elaboration and giving example can be okay if necessary

- Clearly state things (E.X. “Concept X is when…”; “In this short


essay/paragraph I argue …”)

- Just start writing (Don’t get caught up in trying to find the perfect
starting sentence)

- READ THE QUESTIONS CAREFULLY!!! – Some may require examples


or further elaboration.

that deviates from socially accepted
norms(Deviance Crime)
Criminality- Behaviors or actions
that violate law
Stigma /Stigmatization- A
form of marginalization
resulting from assumptions
based off a persons physical
and social characteristics that
lead to disgrace or rejection
from society; Ascribed lower
social value
Key Concepts

Moral Panic- Social Concern


that provokes intense feelings and
fears. Often started by those
seeking control over normalized
morals, or by an overreaction of
those unfamiliar with certain
behaviors
Governmentality- The State,
or Government, exercising control
of its citizens by having them
internalize norms, morals, values,
beliefs, etc. and how those in
power use them. (Think Politics
and Moral Panic)
Key Concepts
Emotional Labour- Labour
related to or requiring emotional
regulation and management; Must be
paid for it to be labour (Otherwise it
is just Emotional Management)
Front Stage- What we do when
others are aware of us- Impression
management
Back Stage- What we do when we
think no one is aware of us - Involves
planning, strategizing, or thinking
about our Front stage.

- What kinds of people (other than service
industry) engage in emotional labor using
social media? (Note: Must be paid; think of
Tik Tok, youtube, streaming, etc.)
- What are some examples of appropriate and
inappropriate emotional displays have you
seen?
- What are some examples of “Authenticity”
being performed on social media?
- What does “Authenticity” look to you?
- How is Media an agent of socialization
- How does social media impact our values,
norms, and ideas of self-representation?
- What are the standards of an “ideal image”?

Revisiting Theory: Applying Theory

- Concept examples: Socialization, Social Capital,


Ethnocentrism, Cultural relativism, Popular culture, Rituals,
emotional labour, etc.

- Examples of topics to write about: A specif ic holiday your


family celebrates, a social pressure you felt at school,
explaining a specif ic par t of your job, family structure,
school culture, work culture, family immigration status and
how your family adapted, your immigration status and the
process of school or getting a job, etc.
