What is a Personal Pronoun?

A personal pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun, which represents a person, a group of
people, or a thing. We use personal pronouns so we don’t have to repeat the same noun again and again
in a sentence.

Types of Personal Pronouns


1. Subject Pronouns: These are used as the subject of a sentence.
Examples: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
• Example sentence: She is reading a book.
2. Object Pronouns: These are used as the object of a verb or preposition.
Examples: me, you, him, her, it, us, them.
• Example sentence: The teacher gave us homework.
3. Possessive Pronouns: These show ownership or possession.
Examples: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs.
• Example sentence: This book is mine.
1. I like to play basketball every afternoon.
2. You are a very good friend.
3. He brought his favorite toy to school
4. The teacher asked her to join the team.
5. This jacket is theirs, not yours.

2. Demonstrative Pronouns

 Definition: These pronouns point to specific things or people.


 Examples:
o This, that, these, those
o Example sentences:
 This is my favorite toy.
 Those are my brother’s shoes.

3. Interrogative Pronouns

 Definition: These pronouns are used to ask questions.


 Examples:
o Who, whom, whose, which, what
o Example sentences:
 Who is calling you?
 Which one do you want?

4. Relative Pronouns

 Definition: These pronouns connect clauses or phrases to a noun.


 Examples:
o Who, whom, whose, which, that
o Example sentences:
 The boy who won the race is my friend.
 This is the house that we bought last year.

5. Indefinite Pronouns

 Definition: These pronouns refer to people or things that are not specific.
 Examples:
o Someone, anyone, nobody, everybody, everything
o Example sentences:
 Everyone is excited for the field trip.
 Somebody left their umbrella here.

6. Reciprocal Pronouns

 Definition: These pronouns show a mutual action or relationship.


 Examples:
o Each other, one another
o Example sentences:
 The two friends help each other with homework.
 They always share their toys with one another.

7. Compound Pronouns

 Definition: These pronouns are made by adding "-self" or "-selves" to personal pronouns.
 Examples:
o Myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves
o Example sentences:
 I made the cake all by myself.
 They cleaned the room by themselves.

8. Compound Subject

 Definition: When two or more subjects are joined by "and" or "or".


 Examples:
o My brother and I, Anna or James
o Example sentences:
 My sister and I love watching movies.
 Either my mom or my dad will pick me up.
