THE POET

Kate Greenaway, also called Catherine Greenaway, (born March 17, 1846, London, Eng.—died
Nov. 6, 1901, London)was an English artist and book illustrator known for her original and
charming children’s books. She was among the three most influential children’s writer of her
time.
In this poem, the speaker and a companion are standing on a bridge and watching things
around them. As they wish to see many things- a fish, a spider, a flower boat. The poem
presents these simple things in a manner that brings great delight.
NOW READ THE POEM

ON THE BRIDGE
If I could see a little fish–
That is what I just now wish!
I want to see his great round eyes
Always open in surprise.

I wish a water rat would glide

Slowly to the other side;
Or a dancing spider sit
On the yellow flags a bit.

I think I'll get some stones to throw,

And watch the pretty circles show.
Or shall we sail a flower-boat,
And watch it slowly–slowly float?

That's nice–because you never know

How far away it means to go;
And when to-morrow comes, you see,
It may be in the great wide sea.
WORDS TO KNOW
1. Glide- move smoothly and quietly
He started to glide her across the floor easily.
Boat glides swiftly.
2. a bit- a little while
I have a bit of a fever.
The weather is a bit warmer today.
3. Pretty- quite, but not extremely
She sang pretty well.
Tom is a pretty good snowboarder.
SUMMARY
The poem On the Bridge illustrates some simple wishes of the poet as she stands on a bridge
with her companion and sees the water below her.

One of her wishes is to see a little fish in the water. She wants to see the fish swimming with
its round eyes wide open in surprise. She also wants to see a water rat move slowly to the
other side of the water body or a spider prancing (to walk in an energetic way and with
more movement than necessary) about.

She is also debating (serious discussion of a subject) on whether she should get some stones
to throw into the water and enjoy watching the ripples form or if she should make a flower
boat and set it sailing. The poet feels that this would be a good thing to do because it could sail
far and be in the big sea the next day.

Make sentences with the following words.

1. surprise
2. prancing
3. debate

Complete the following sentences.

1. Some of the things the speaker wishes to see are _______.
2. The pretty circles are actually ______________.

Think and answer.

Q1 Who were standing on the bridge and what were they doing ?
Ans-The speaker and her companion were standing on the bridge and were watching things
around them .
Q. Do you think the speaker enjoys standing on the Bridge? Use words or lines from the poem
to say why you think so.
Ans. Yes, the poet enjoys standing on the bridge as she sees the water below her. She
expresses her wishes that she wants to do while standing on the bridge. Like:
"I could see a little fish", "I want to see his great round eyes", "I wish a water rat would glide",
" I'll get some stones to throw" so that she could see how far it goes.

SUBTRACTION
Subtraction of numbers with more than four digits can be done in the
same way as we have learnt to do subtraction of smaller numbers earlier.

Terms used in subtraction

1. Minuend –The number from which we subtract.

2. Subtrahend - The number which is subtracted.
3. Difference – The answer of subtraction.

Important formulae
a) Minuend – subtrahend = difference
b) Minuend = difference + subtrahend
c) Subtrahend = minuend – difference
Examples –
1. Find subtrahend
Minuend = 3,71,700 difference = 3,59,008
Subtrahend = minuend – difference
= 3,71,700 – 3,59,008

Properties of subtraction
1. Subtraction does not follow commutative and associative property.

For example: 8-2 ≠ 2-8 and 10-(6-2)≠(10-6)-2

2. If 0 is subtracted from a number, the difference is the number itself.

Example: 6-0=6

3. A number subtracted from itself gives 0 as the difference. Ex 3-3=0

4. 1 subtracted from a number gives the predecessor of the number as the
difference.
Subtraction of 5-digit and 6-digit numbers ( with borrowing)
Solve: 74834 – 38915
74834
-38915
35919
Steps of subtraction.
1. We arrange the given numbers in columns.
2. We start subtraction from ones place digit and continue columnwise.
3. Borrow if necessary, from the next column to the left.
Subtract and check
Difference of two numbers is correct when the sum of the
subtrahend number and the difference is equal to the minuend.

Example –
Subtract 2365 from 6476 and check.

Find the missing digits.

Here is an example-
Word problems based on subtraction are of several types:

(a) Partitioning : Take away, remove, given away.

(b) Reducing : Find out how much has been given away or how much
remains.

(c) Comparison : More than / less than.

(d) Inverse of addition : How much more to be added. The key words
to look out for in a problem sum involving subtraction are:
take away; how many more ; how many less ; how many left ;
greater ; smaller.

Example -
1. 3,43,392 people live in Goa and 3,51,462 live in Puducherry. Which
town has more people and how many more?

There are 8070 more people who live in Puducherry.

Mixed operation on addition and subtraction

2. 78,900 books were published in the year 2017. 26,543 books were of
Science , 15,938 books were of Mathematics and the remaining
books were of other subjects. Find the number of books of other
subjects.
To get the number of books of other Subjects , we have to subtract the
no. of Maths and science books from the total number of books.

Do as directed.
a) Solve Get Set Go in the book of page no. 41 Q.1 , 2 , 4
b) Solve Ex- 3( A) Q. 1 , 4 , 5 , 6 and 7 in the book and Q.2 ,3 , 8 , 9 and
10 in the C.W. copy.
c) Solve Ex- 3 ( B) Q. 1 , 3 , 4 , 6 and 9 in the C.W.copy.
d) Solve Ex- 3 ( C) Q.2 , 3 and 6 in the C.W.copy.
e) Solve Worksheet of page no. 50 Q.1 , 2 in the book and 3 , 4 , 5 in the
C.W. copy.
f) Solve Mental Maths of page no. 51 in the book.

TOPIC :- THE WESTERN DESERT

SUB-TOPIC :- THE LAND, CLIMATE, NATURAL VEGETATION AND WATER SUPPLY
Content of the above lesson:-
 The land to the West of the Aravalli Hills, in Rajasthan, is rocky and sandy.
This is the Great Indian Desert, also known as the Thar Desert.
 The Thar Desert is covered with a thick sheet of loose sand. At some places,
there are small hills of sand called sand dunes.

 There are very few streams in the Thar Desert. They mostly remain dry.
Luni is the most important river. At some places, oases are found. The land
around an oasis is fertile.
 The Thar Desert remains hot and dry throughout the year. There is very
little or no rainfall. In summer, days are very hot and nights are cool. In
winter, days are warm and nights are very cold.
 Natural vegetation: A hot and dry climate means that mostly scattered
bushes and thorny shrubs grow here. The khejri, kikar and babul trees
grow in the eastern part of the desert. Animals such as camels, blackbucks,
chinkaras and great Indian bustards are found in this region. The camel is
the most useful animal.

KHEJRI KIKAR BABUL

 Water supply:- There is always very little water. Village women walk long
distances to fetch water. The state government is trying to provide water
for domestic use and irrigation.
