Proficiency
Revision Bulletin No 1, October 2010

Cambridge English: Proficiency – a brand new revision of a century-old exam.

Cambridge English: Proficiency, commonly known as Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), was first launched in 1913. It was
aimed at those wanting to use English to teach at university level or to enter the diplomatic services. Nearly 100 years later,
Cambridge English: Proficiency still provides the most in-depth and thorough examination for those who need high-level
English to excel.

Teaching and testing methodology and practices have evolved since 1913 and, to reflect these changes,
Cambridge English: Proficiency was revised significantly in 1945, 1967, 1984 and 2002. The conclusion of the next update
will coincide with Cambridge English: Proficiency’s centenary in 2013.

Why are we updating Cambridge English: Proficiency?

All Cambridge English exams are periodically updated to reflect the latest research and developments in teaching and
assessment. We also look carefully at how exams are being used and how to make them more appropriate for their
candidates. The revision cycle includes consultation with teachers, centres and other stakeholders (see the diagram below).

1 1
As part of this process we consulted with 700 teachers and 170 centres in November 2009.
Analysis showed that both groups felt that

• c ontent in the revised Cambridge English: Proficiency should be more suitable for study and career
advancement purposes.
• the exam should be shorter (many felt that some individual papers contained too many tasks).
• a computer-based version would be popular.
• the testing focuses and coverage in the exam was about right.

Teachers and centres also said that while enhanced job prospects and recognition in the higher education sector
were important motivators for candidates taking the exam, some potential candidates were put off taking
Cambridge English: Proficiency because they perceived it as being less suitable for their needs than it could be.

This research, combined with additional work carried out by Cambridge ESOL’s specialist exam development and research
teams, working closely with external consultants and senior examiners, has led us to frame a review that will seek to make
Cambridge English: Proficiency

• more suitable for higher education study purposes

• more suitable for career advancement purposes
• look and feel fresher and more modern
• more appealing to the target age group
• shorter than the current exam
• compatible with computer-based testing

Above all, we want to ensure that Cambridge English: Proficiency remains the standard C2 level exam.

Future development
Work is already underway and trialling of new task types as well as time trialling activities have recently taken place in Europe,
Asia and South America. We are now at a point in the revision cycle where we are reviewing the results of recent trialling and
developing the new specifications for further consultation.

Between now and the completion of the revision process in 2013, we will be producing a series of six bulletins, of which this
is the first, to keep you updated with the development of the new Cambridge English: Proficiency.

Watch out for the next bulletin in April 2011, where we will introduce the specifications for the revised
Cambridge English: Proficiency. Further bulletins will give paper-specific information.

Keeping you updated

The first live exam dates for the new Cambridge English: Proficiency are scheduled for March 2013, but you can still enter
candidates for the current exam at any session date until December 2012.
