GPNS 2016/2017 Stardard Modifications

1 Background
As Marriott’s Global Property Networks Standards (GPNS)1 continue to be deployed at new and
existing Marriott hotels, and as new technologies and business needs emerge in the marketplace,
Marriott must continue to evolve the GPNS specifications to maintain our competitive position.
The current release of the standards is version 2018. The prior release of these standards was
version 2017. Effective January 1, 2018, all properties deploying a new property internet
solution in 2018 or signing a new contract in 2018 for property internet services must use
the 2018 version of the GPNS specifications.

Since the previous release, continuous enhancements have been made to the standards to reflect
the following:

• New requirements
• Updated list of certified hardware
• Removed requirements
• Security enhancements
• Clarification of specific requirements.

Note: It is anticipated that an update of these requirements will be performed on an annual basis,
however, it is also anticipated the volume of changes made to the Standards will be significantly
reduced over time.

The purpose of this document is to provide the LAN Service Provider (LSP) and property
management a high-level summary of the differences between the 2017 and 2018 versions of the
GPNS specifications. This document will hopefully reduce the time that an LSP requires to review
and understand the key enhancements and become compliant with the 2018 standards. Please
note that some changes may have a financial impact on the LSP and/or the property.

2 2018 Document Summary

During the creation of version 2018, no existing documents were eliminated. However, several
new documents were added to the standards.
For reference purposes, table 1 compares the two releases of the standard and indicates
replacement and removal of specific standards documents. More details of the specific changes
between the two releases are presented in the following section.

3 Detailed Summary of Release Difference

Contained in this section is a summary of the technical differences between the 2017 and 2018
releases of the GPNS specifications. A complete review of all standard documents is required
for the LSP to confirm the full impact of the new 2018 specifications. It should be noted that
since it is difficult to determine if the change has a financial impact to the LSP or the property,
the change must be reviewed by the LSP to determine if the change will result in an increase in
development and/or support costs to the property.

3.1 General Comments on Analysis Process

In order to provide the LSP with a mechanism to assist in tracking the changes between the two
releases, Marriott International reviewed and recorded the major differences between the two
documents. The major differences will be listed in the tables presented later in this section. An
LSP should perform a complete review of all of documents to verify that they understand all of the
changes.

Based on this analysis, the following observations have been made:

1. The large majority of the changes fell into the edits and/or grammatical area. In most
cases, the edits were made to help further clarify the requirement. In addition, a large
majority of these edits were made as a result of input from the current certified LSPs as
well as questions from properties.
2. A very small number of changes fell into the operational category.
3. Few of the changes were made for security reasons.
4. Other than the need to add additional access points to improve wireless coverage in
specific areas, none of the changes will result in a financial impact to the property.
5. Only a small number of changes were made to the Hotel Network Technical Specification.
6. The most significant change was in the area of wireless requirements, deployment and
equipment upgrades as well as the VLAN/IP addressing standards.
7. Although it appears that none of the changes will result in a financial impact to the LSPs,
the LSP has the opportunity to discuss any perceived financial impact during the regularly
scheduled ARB calls.

3.2 Details of Differences between 2017 and 2018 Specification

Contained in this section are the details of the key differences between the 2017 and 2018
specifications. It should be noted that since it is difficult to determine if the change has a
financial impact to the LSP and/or the property, the change must be reviewed by the LSP to
determine if the change will result in an increase in development and/or support costs to the
property. The information will be presented in a tabular format and contain the following
information:
• Section number in the 2018 Standard that contains the change;
• Brief description of the change;
• Notation if a previous report has been retired or replaced.
