220511 MODULE Refrigerant Recovery MT 1/7

TECHNICAL TRAINING MODULE SHEET

Refrigerant Recovery & Recycling

„ Objective

Given a vehicle and S/M, you will be able to:

• State the reason why it is important that refrigerant is not released into the atmosphere.
• Correctly identify the differences between R-134a and R-12 systems.
• Collect refrigerant from an air-conditioner system using a recovery/recycling station.
• Purify the collected refrigerant using a recovery/recycling station.
220511 MODULE Refrigerant Recovery MT 2/7

„ Why This Module Is Important

It is recommended that refrigerant be collected when discharging of an air-conditioner

system is being performed, not only so that costs may be reduced, but also to ensure that
the detrimental effect on the environment can be limited. This refrigerant should then be
purified and stored so that it can be reused. By learning how to recover and recycle
refrigerant, you will save time in the workshop and help to reduce the associated costs.

„ Module Overview

In this module, you will:

• Read Resource, S/M, and the operation manual for the recovery/recycling station.
• Answer questions in Work Sheet.
• Collect and purify refrigerant.

STOP
„ Decision Point

If you have already acquired the skills described in Objective and can answer the questions on
Work Sheet, you may bypass the training section with Resource. If so, finish Self Evaluation
and then see your instructor.

„ What You Will Need

• Resource
• Vehicle with an air-conditioner system
• S/M for the assigned vehicle
• R-134a recovery/recycling station
• Operation manual for the recovery/recycling station
• Safety goggles
• Common hand tools
• Supplemental materials which have been prepared by your instructor
220511 MODULE Refrigerant Recovery MT 3/7

„ Prerequisite

Before starting this module, the following module(s) must be finished.

22031x Air-conditioner-unit Leak Test

Work Sheet: Section 1

„ Getting Ready

Enter your starting time in the BEGIN box on the first page of the Module Sheet.

Read Resource for this module and find the pertaining information in S/M.

„ Quiz

Answer the following questions.

1. Which of the following precautions must be observed during refrigerant-recovery

operations? (Multiple selection permitted)

A. ___ Safety goggles must be worn to protect the eyes.

B. ___ Refrigerant containers should be stored in the warmest location within the
workshop.

C. ___ It must be confirmed that there is adequate ventilation within the workshop.

D. ___ The engine must be operated at idle speed until the radiator fan cycles twice.

2. Why has the use of R-12 has been banned since 1993?

A. ___ R-12 has been banned because it is inflammable.

B. ___ R-12 has been banned because CFCs are difficult to produce in volume.

C. ___ R-12 has been banned because CFCs lead to the destruction of the ozone layer.

D. ___ R-12 has been banned because a large amount of ozone is needed to produce R-
12.

3. Which of the following statements is/are correct with regard to the requirement to recover
and recycle refrigerant? (Multiple selection permitted)

A. ___ International laws oblige us to recycle refrigerant to reduce the amount of

drainage that pollutes rivers, lakes, and oceans, etc.

B. ___ Repair cost can be reduced if refrigerant is reused.

C. ___ Refrigerant has a strong odor.

D. ___ In certain countries, the release of refrigerants (including R-134a) into the
atmosphere is forbidden by laws and regulations.

4. Which of the following components should not be used in a common fashion on both R-
12 and R-134a systems due to its material makeup?

A. ___ Connection hoses

B. ___ O-rings

C. ___ Quick joints

D. ___ High side adapters

5. How can the refrigerant used in an air-conditioner system be correctly identified? (Multiple
selection permitted)

A. ___ The refrigerant can be identified by the market or the country in which the vehicle
is registered.

B. ___ The refrigerant can be identified from the model year of the vehicle.

C. ___ The refrigerant can be identified using the under-hood label.

D. ___ The refrigerant can be identified from the service-port configuration.

6. Which of the following measures should be taken to protect an empty air-conditioner

system?

A. ___ The system should be left open for at least 24 hours so that all of its refrigerant
can evaporate.

B. ___ All openings should be plugged securely during repair operations.

C. ___ The system should be purged using compressed air.

D. ___ The system should be run for few minutes every day to prevent seizure of the
compressor.

7. Contamination by which of the following substances can be reduced by recycling (or by

purifying) R-134a refrigerant?

A. ___ Air

B. ___ Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

C. ___ Moisture

D. ___ Refrigerant oil

„ Self Evaluation

Obtain Feedback Sheet and compare your answers with those on it. Review Resource if
your answers do not agree with the answers on Feedback Sheet.

Work Sheet: Section 2

„ Getting Ready

Read Resource for this module and find the pertaining information in S/M.

Prepare tools and materials for hands-on practice.

„ Hands-on Practice

1. Collect refrigerant from the air-conditioner system in accordance with the directions given in
the operation manual for the R-134a recovery/recycling station.

2. Purify the collected refrigerant using the recovery/recycling station.
