CHAPTER - 1
INTRODUCTION
The annual turnover of tyre industry exceeds about Rs.15, 000 crores and thisefore plays an important role in the economic development of the country. Tyre export has exceeded the Rs.15, 000 crores mark.30% of this export goes to U.S.A. about 15 million people over their employment to the Indian tyre industry. With most of existing vehicle manufacturers plants in India, 5% to 6% demand growth for tyres is expected, once the present recession is over. The Indian tyre market is such that only 4 or 5 companies dominate the market and rest is somehow able to survive. The tyre market in India can be divided into six main end users segment - Truck and Buses, Passengers cars, Jeeps, Light commercial vehicles, Tractors, Two and Three Wheelers. At present Indian market is dominated by six major players namely-J.K, Apollo, Ceat, M.R.F, Goodyear and Bridgestone. Today radials are standard fitments on major cars manufactured in India. Radials are superior in terms of road - grip, handling, tyre - life, car - dynamics and safety. On the othis hand thise are critics who say radial play havoc (destruction) Indian roads. This may be true for older cars such that Ambassador and Padmini. Radial tyres are manufacture through hi-tech process and are built to exacting standards and tolerance. These are ideally suited to the suspension systems of new generation cars. When it comes to brands of car radials, it is matter of personal choice. Today, manufactures such as J.K, Apollo, M.R.F, and Goodyear offer a wide range of radial tyres suited to the new vehicle in the country.
The tyre industry is currently having a boom simply because of car industry in India is booming. The Indian tyre manufactures have to be extra careful about quality and must deliver thise best in order to be compete in the market, which will soon be followed with foreign competitors. With the Indian - crazy about foreign goods, it is essential for the Indian tyre manufactures to not only increase their production and improve their quality, but also cultivate essence of being Indian to touch the patriotic feeling of the people.
CHAPTER - 2
Industry Turnover (2005-2006) (E) Rs. 100,000 million Installed Capacity (E) 5730 million Postproduction (E) 4140 million Nos. Capacity Utilization (2005-2006) (E) 72%Taxes & Duties Paid (E) Rs. 28,500 million Excise Duty Contribution Rs. 12,530 million
Tyre industries are 11th Highest Contributor of excise revenue to Indian government.
The tyre industry in India is about 80 years old. The first two companies to setup trading activities in India were Dunlop and Firestone, which started functioning in late thirties and early forties. Firestone was the first company to enter in the Indian tyre market in 1920, followed by Goodyear in 1926. These companies set up their sales unit through, which imported tyres, were distributed. The manufacturing of tyre in India commenced when Dunlop started the first factory at Shah Gang, West Bengal, in 1936 followed by Firestone in Bombay. Ever since the industry has undergone continues expansion and technology up gradation, emerging as a fore - runner among Indias major manufacturing enterprises.
In early 1960s the pioneers of Indian tyre industries setup fully indigenous factories, with the help of liberalize governmental policies. Then they enter into collaboration with leading transnational and have over the years to keep up worldwide trends in tyre technology.
While dealing with the history of tyres, it is important to mention whise it all began with the invention of wheel. This is now regarded as a major step taken by human towards civilization. The Indian tyre industry, too, can be said to have played a major part of the countrys development as a modern industrialized nation.
Indigenous and Ready Availability New vehicle manufactures, while launching a series of latest model, have easy access to (and ready availability of) indigenous tyre of their respective specification and matching international standards. Self Sufficiency and Vibrant Marketing Set up Except Aero and some othis specialized categories, domestic production / capabilities fully meet indigenous requirement. Ready availability of tyres at retail label even in remotest parts of the country achieved through a mix of responsive marketing channels.
From both the short and long term points of view, overall future outlook for the tyre industry is indeed bright. In the short term, given the encouraging progress of the monsoon and the basic strength of our economy, the process of industrial recovery that began in 2000 will continue. As such, activity in construction, housing and roads will rise. The fortune of these three sectors are directly linked with transportation sector, with which, in turn, the type industry is directly connected.
In the long term, one notes with satisfaction the continued upward trend in recent years of the share of roads vis--vis rail transportation in India. This trend is expected to strengthen with the government's initiative for developing a network of multi-lane highways and for giving shape to the "Golden Quadrangle. The Indian scenario will hope fully transform to one of world - class automobile running on roads. This is the best outcome that any Indian tyre manufacturer can hope for.

CHAPTER - 4 BRIEFING ABOUT THE OTHIS TYRE COMPANIES APOLLO TYRES Apollo Tyres Ltd. (ATL) is one of the leading tyre manufacturing companies in India.ATL manufactures automobile's tyres, tubes and flaps and is well entrenched in the truck and bus tyre replacement segment, which companies the bulk of the market. However, its presence in the fast growing passenger car and two-wheeler segment is low. ATL has grown rapidly in the last decade, and as being a marginal player, it has raised head to become the third largest player in the tyre industry. ATL management has been quick to spot opportunities and has displayed remarkable market savvy CEAT LTD. Ceat Ltd. a part of the RPG Goenka group is the second largest tyre manufacturer in the country after MRF. Ceat manufacturers truck & bus and passenger car tyre segment with a market share of 14% and 17% respectively. It is presently focusing on catering to the fast growing passenger car and two wheeler industries. Ceat is a part of RPG group, which is diversified, with presence in major sectors like power fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, tyres, computer, telecom, financial services, GOODYEAR INDIA LTD. Goodyear India Ltd. (GIL) is a 74% subsidiary of the $13.5 bn Goodyear Tyre ad Rubber Company, U.S., the world's third largest company. GIL has now come to occupy 11.3% of the domestic market share in the industry. During the year, GIL widened its product range to include nine new tyres. These include farm segment tyres, passenger car tyres and LCV/MUV tyres. GIL has good parental support, which has enabled it to bring in the best of the technology in the country. The management has also been aggressive in terms of introducing new products and marketing initiatives. MRF LTD MRF manufactures automobiles tyres, tubes, trade rubber and precured treads. MRF is increasing its market share inspite, increased competition in most segments of the tyre sector. The company has considerable lead over its rivals in the car, scooter, and othis type segments but faces stiff competition from othis global players in the truck and tractor tyre segment. Though the company has a head start ahead of all othis in the Indian market 1960, thanks due to fragmented (uneven) nature of the market, yet the leaders who have recently made in roads are catching up. Due to considerable brand equity and better quality, MRF tyres fetch a price premium. However the company will face a stiff competition from foreign companies like Bridgestone, Michelin and Goodyear in the radial tyre segment.

PROMOTION: As the tyre marketing is facing tough from imported /foreign brands, JK should focus on product awareness and product preference advertisement. Dealers should be involved in developing strategies, providing feedback and strengthening consumer relations, so that market network may improve qualitatively as well as quantitatively.
JK should also do aggressive ad campaign with celebrity endorsement and innovative and creative logo should be thise, which matches the product and signifies the strength of tyre. Attractive free gifts and festive discount should be offered to customers to boost sales. Attractive billboards and hoardings should be placed at specific places and ecofriendly message should be conveyed. JK should sponsor programs on vernacular basis, like local newspaper, local cable, on radio, etc.
