5E’s Lesson Plan in Science

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to;
a. identify the different ways to separate mixture
b. determine the purpose of separating mixture
c. demonstrate knowledge of different techniques in separating mixture
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: SEPARATING MIXTURE
B. Reference:
1. Teacher’s Guide page: Science Curriculum Guide page 82-83
2. Learner’s Materials pages: Science 6-Q1 Module 1 – Lesson 2 – Separating
Mixture
C. Materials: Pictures, Sieving material, magnets, sand, water, salt, gravel
III. LEARNING PROCEDURES

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. ENGAGE
1. Preliminary Activities

1.1 Prayer Good morning Sir, good morning classmates!

Let us stand for a prayer to be (The students stand up and started to pray)
lead to us by Mr. Kyle

1.2 Greetings

Good morning children

1.3 Checking of attendance

Are there any absent from the

class? None Sir!

2. Review

Class before we start our lesson, let’s have

first recall our lesson yesterday.

What was the lesson all about? Our lesson yesterday is about Mixture and
their Characteristics.
Very good!

Who can give the meaning of Mixture? A substance made from a combination of
different substances, or any combination of
Very good! different things.

How about the two types of Mixture? What The two types of mixture are the
are those? Homogeneous and Heterogeneous.

Very good!
It’s Good that you understand well the lesson
yesterday.

3. Motivation
a. the teacher will present an ( students will do the activity)
activity.

Fix-Up Mixtures
Direction: Arrange the puzzle

(The teacher will distribute envelope

containing the broken puzzle. The
students will work in group of six.)

Ok, very good class! The following puzzle that

you’ve successfully arrange has something to 1. Salt and Sand
do with our discussion.

b. The teacher will present

different kinds of mixture and 2. Gravel and Sand
the students will identify each
substance that makes up the 3. Water and Salt
mixture.
4. Sand and Rice grains
1. Who can identify the first one? What
are the substances that are present in 5. Oil and Water
this mixture?
Yes!
2. How about the second one?

3. And the third one?

4. And the fourth?

5. How about the last one?

That’s right! Do you think class that is it

possible for us to separate these mixture?

That’s correct! We can separate these

mixture by using different techniques.

B. EXPLORE

I will group you into three groups and you are

going to do a activity. What you’re going to
do is identify the substance that are being
mixed and identify the method you used in
separating those mixture.

Group 1: Separating Mixture using (The students will do the activity)

DECANTATION, SIEVING, or
MAGNETIZING

Group 2: Separating Mixture using

HAND PICKING, SIEVING, or
MAGNETIZING

Group 3: Separating Mixture using

DECANTATION, HANDPICKING, or
MAGNETIZING

(Each group will present their output

in front)

Rubrics
Content 40 (Each group will perform the activity given to
Cooperation 20 them and after 10 minutes they present their
Creativity 20 output in front)
Overall presentation 20
Total 100

C. EXPLAIN

The individual substances in a mixture can be

separated in different ways. The techniques
or methods of separating mixture depends
on the type or kind of mixture have.

Do you know how can you separate these Yes sir!

kind of mixtures?

Can you name some techniques? Decantation

Handpicking
Sieving
Magnetizing
Ok very good class!

Now, the components of mixtures can be

separated in different parts.

We have..

Solid to Solid mixture

Handpicking – or Physical manipulation is the
technique used in separating the solid
components of a heterogeneous mixture.

Sieving – is used when to or more

components of different sizes are separated
from a mixture.

Magnetizing – mixture of metals and non-

metals could be separated with the use of
magnets.

Solid to Liquid mixture

Evaporation – is the technique of separating
soluble solids from liquid through heating.

Filtration – is the technique used to separate

insoluble solid from liquid with the use of a
cloth or filter paper.

Mixture of Less Dense and Dense Substances

Decantation – is the technique used in
separating a less dense substance from a
dense one. In the process of Decantation, the
mixture us left undisturbed.

D. ELABORATE

A. Developing Master (Formative

Assessment)

I. Identify what techniques should be

used to separate the following mixture. Write 1. Handpicking
your answer on your paper.

1. Rotten vegetables from basket 2. Filtration and Decantation

of vegetables.
3. Evaporation
2. Sand and water.
4. Magnetizing
3. Salt from seawater
5. Sieving
4. Nails and sand

5. Fine flour from lumpy flour

II. Read the sentences carefully and

match the column A with column B.

Column A Column B

1. Separating the coconut a. Filtration 1. A

milk from the coconut
meat.

2. Drying of wet clothes b. Sieving 2. C

under the heat of the sun.

3. Separate the pins from c. Evaporation 3. D

the mongo seeds.
4. Separate the grapes from d. 4. E
Magnetizing
the basket of apples.
5. B
5. Separate the sand from e.
Handpicking
the gravel.

B. Making Generalization and

Finding Practical Application in
Daily Living. Handpicking, Sieving, decantation,
filtration, evaporation, magnetizing
1. What are the different
ways in separating the
mixture? Separating mixtures is important because
it helps us get pure substances from
2. How important is mixtures, which we can use in many ways.
separating mixture?
The benefits of separating mixtures
3. What are the benefits of include getting useful substances,
separating mixture? recycling, and reducing waste.

4. What do you think will

happen to the things If we didn’t separate mixtures, things
around us if separating around us would be messy, and we
mixture does not occur? wouldn’t have many useful products.

5. How can you relate these We relate separating mixtures to daily life
things to our day to day when we recycle, clean, or cook because
lives? these activities involve separating
different things to get what we need.
