3 – Solving Quadratic Equations

Define Quadratic Equation:

An equation is quadratic if it can be written in the form 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0. Where a, b and c are
Real numbers and 𝑎 ≠ 0.

Example 1:
Example 1 Video Link
Determine if the following equations are quadratic.

a. 𝑥(𝑥 − 4) = 3𝑥 + 2

𝑥 2 −1
b. = 2𝑥
𝑥

Methods for Solving Quadratic Equations

1. Set = 0 and Factor
2. Square Root Method
3. Completing the Square
4. Quadratic Formula

Set Equal to Zero and Factor Method

Example 2: (lead coefficient = 1)
Example 2 Video Link

a. 𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 6 = 0
b. 𝑥 2 − 27𝑥 + 50 = 0

c. 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 24 = 0

Example 3 (lead coefficient ≠ 1)

Example 3 Video Link

Solve for x.

a. 5𝑥 2 + 36𝑥 + 7 = 0

b. 6𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 12 = 0
Example 4 (Difference of Squares).
Example 4 Video Link

a. 𝑥 2 − 9 = 0

b. 25 − 4𝑥 2 = 0

Method 2: Square Root Method

1. Isolate the variable or quantity that is being squared.
2. Take the square root of both sides (remember to add ± to the constant side)
3. Split into 2 equations.
4. Solve each equation independently.

Example 5:
Watch this video and then solve the following equations for x.

a. 𝑥 2 = 36

b. 25𝑥 2 = 54
Example 6:
Watch this video and then solve the following equations for x.

a. 4𝑥 2 + 3 = 199

b. −2(𝑥 + 2)2 = −144

Method 3: Completing the Square

Watch this video and then find the value that completes the square.

a. 𝑥 2 − 20𝑥 +_________

b. 𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 +_________

Watch this video and then find the value that completes the square.

c. 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 +______

d. 𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 +______
Example 7:
Watch this video and then solve the following equations for x.

a. 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 32 = 0

Watch this video and then solve the following equations for x.

b. 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 = −4

Method 4: Quadratic Formula

Given a quadratic equation of the form: 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0

−𝑏±√𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
The solution to the equation is given by: 𝑥= *Memorize this formula*
2𝑎

Example 8:
Watch this video and then solve for x using the Quadratic Formula.

a. 6𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 15 = 0
Watch this video and then solve for x using the Quadratic Formula.

b. 𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 16 = 0

Discriminant

Given a quadratic equation of the form: 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0

The Discriminant is: 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐 *Memorize this formula*

Watch this video and then complete the following statements:

1. If 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐 > 0 then: ___________________________________

2. If 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐 < 0 then: ___________________________________

3. If 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐 = 0 then:___________________________________

Application Problems

Example 9:
Watch this video and then complete the application problem.
An object is thrown upwards from the top of a 240-foot building with an initial velocity of 32
feet per second. The height after t seconds is given by the quadratic equation:
ℎ = −16𝑡 2 + 32𝑡 + 240. When will the object hit the ground?

Example 10:
Watch this video and then complete the application problem.

The length of a rectangle is three inches more than its width. Its area is 130 square inches. Find
the width and length of the rectangle.
