1. SCOPE
This standard specifies the design, material, constructional features and dimensional
details of cable trays generally used for supporting cables laid in open atmosphere.
2. PURPOSE:
The purpose is to give a general guideline for selection of Cable trays of different
types.
5. General.
5.1. Cable trays shall be made of materials MS Steel / Galvanised Steel having ladder /
perforated / solid type design, complete with all necessary coupler plates, elbows,
tees, bends, reducers, stiffeners and other accessories and hardware as specified by
the user.
5.2. All hardware (i.e. bolts, nuts, screws, washers, etc.) shall be hot dip galvanised for
GI type cable tray.
5.3. The cable tray shall be so constructed that there are no sharp edges, burrs or
projections, which are likely to damage the insulation of the cable.
5.4. The minimum bend radius of the cable tray shall correspond to that of the largest
cable laid in the tray.
5.5. The length of the cable trays shall be 2.5, 3 and 4.5 meter as specified by user.

6.4. The cable trays shall be fabricated as per drawing Nos.SD- 0742/A and SD- 743/A
(refer annexure-1 & 2) and shall be in standard lengths of 4.5 meters.
6.5. The cable tray of sizes 1 to 4 shall be fabricated out of angle size 35 x 35 x 6 mm. In
case 35 x 35 x 6mm angle is not available, 45 x 45 x 6mm size angle can be used.
6.6. The cable tray sizes 5 to 8 shall be fabricated with angle size 50x50x6 mm.
6.7. A set of two flats of 25 x 6mm with a gap of 9mm in between and a single flat of 50 x
6mm shall be used alternatively as cross members.
6.8. The required length of the cable trays shall be obtained by joining the trays by means
of square butt welding. But in the location where welding at site is not permitted, (for
example at Coke Ovens), cable trays shall be joined by means of nuts and bolts in
accordance with Drg.Nos. SD-0742/A and SD-0743/A.
6.9. The cable tray shall be supported at intervals of 450mm, 900mm or 1500mm from
one end depending on the loading. The joints shall fall invariably on the cable tray
support.
6.10. At the ends of the cable tray, supports shall be provided if the length falls short of the
specified span of supports.
6.11. The minimum bend radius of the cable tray shall correspond to that of the largest
cable laid in the tray. The recommended minimum bend radii of the cables are given
in Table-2.
V a
6.13. All the steel work of the cable tray shall be painted with a coat of red oxide and
thereafter finished with two coats of grey paint shade No.632 of IS:5-1978.
6.14. Supply condition- Cable trays shall normally be supplied in standard length without
joining plates (Item 3 in both drawings). The joining plates shall be supplied only when
specifically asked for and shall be so bolted that they remain within the standard
length to avoid damage during handling.
